Super Dimension Fortress Macross(Japanese:超時空要塞マクロス,Hepburn:Chōjikū Yōsai Makurosu, lit. "Super Spacetime Fortress Macross") is an anime television series from 1982. According to story creator Shoji Kawamori, it depicts "a love triangle against the backdrop of great battles" during the first Human-alien war. It is the first part of two franchises: The Super Dimension series and Macross series.
Macross (/məˈkrɒs/, not /ˈmeɪkrɒs/) is a science fiction series that combines transformable mecha, apocalyptic battles, wartime romance, and music. It features mechanical designs by Kazutaka Miyatake and Shoji Kawamori (both of Studio Nue) and character designs by Haruhiko Mikimoto of Artland.Macross also created one of the first anime idols Lynn Minmay, turning her voice actress Mari Iijima into an instant celebrity, and launching her musical career. Most of its animation (with edited content and revised dialogue) was adapted in the USA for the first saga of Robotech.
The Super Dimension Fortress Macross (Family Computer)
Super Dimension Fortress Macross(超時空要塞マクロス,Chō Jikū Yōsai Macross) was released for the Japanese Family Computer console in 1985 by video game company Namco and is based on the popular anime TV series of the same name. The game is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up in which the player controls a transformable VF-1 Valkyrievariable fighter in an unending battle against an invading race of gianthumanoidaliens known as the Zentradi.
Gameplay
The gameplay is a very basic and fairly standard form of the recognizable style that has become part of the shoot-em-up genre over the years. The player's task is to blast their way through wave after wave of enemy battlepods, power armors and ships until they reach the Zentradi mothership. Inside it, there is only thirty seconds to reach the central reactor, destroy the outer wall and shoot the core. The mission ends and then begins all over again on an infinite loop.
The player's VF-1 Valkyrie can be transformed into three modes: Gerwalk, Battroid and fighter. This adds to the gameplay as the Gerwalk and Battroid modes serve to progressively slow down the horizontal scrolling and make the game less difficult. However they also move slower. The controller's B button fires the Gun Pod while the A button - in conjunction with the movement of the D-pad - engages the transformation mode. A limited number of micro-missiles can be fired by pressing the Select button.
The game was produced by Bandai and created by the Sega AM2 team that programmed Aero Dancing. The game features a blend of arcade shooting and realistic aerial combat similar to the Ace Combat series.
Gameplay
In the game players play through the events of either the television animated series or the movie. In the longer yet less difficult TV series version of events, players take the pilot role of Skull Seven (スカル７番機 Sukaru Nanabanki) who is then promoted to command of the Purple Team as Purple Leader. In the shorter yet more difficult movie route, the character is referred to as Skull Seven (スカル・セブン Sukaru Sebun) and later on as Apollo Leader.
In both versions, the player's wingmen are two original characters named Eddie Juutilainen and Bruce Rudel. In addition, another original character called Emma Granger acts as the team's tactical officer from aboard the bridge of the SDF-1 Macross. Her name is a nameplay on actress Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame and her character's name from that movie series, Hermione Granger.
In recent years, a deal with Disney has made most of them, barring the original SuperDimensionFortress Macross and its film remake, The Super Dimension Fortress Macross.
