Allotropes: Definition, Examples, and Practice
The topic of allotropes comes up frequently in chemistry. In this video we’ll define the term allotrope, look at examples, and then practice so we can easily recognize allotropes.
Here is the formal definition for allotropes:
Allotropes are different structural forms of the same element in the same physical state.
For example, O2 (g) and O3 (g) are allotropes. They are both made up of only Oxygen atoms, both are gases, but they have different structural formulas.
Something like H2O (l) and H2O2 (l) would not be considered allotropes. This is because H2O is made up of more than one type of element. The same reasoning applies to H2O2.

Red phosphorus is an allotrope of phosphorus. Matches made of red phosphorus are known as safety matches – in order to ignite, it must be struck against the striking surface on the outside of the package.Before the introduction of red phosphorus, the match heads were usually made of white phosphorus – another allotrope of the element.The different colours arise from their different structures! White phosphorus consists of four phosphorus atoms, held together in a tetrahedral arrangement.Other allotropes of phosphorus also exist – black phosphorus and violet phosphorus.
Sulfur exists as many allotropes – the one that you’re most likely familiar with is S8, octasulfur, a bright yellow solid. Another solid allotrope of sulfur is hexasulfur, S6. Sulfur can also exist as gaseous allotropes – disulfur, S2, and trisulfur, S3.
Allotropism also exists in some metalloid elements and metals.

In this video we will looks at what allotropes are, and different examples of them. The term allotrope refers to different forms of the same element.
Diamond and graphite are made of only carbon atoms – yet they exhibit very different physical and chemical properties. These differences are due to the arrangement of carbon atoms within the structure.
Each carbon atom in diamond is covalently bound to four other carbon atoms in a tetrahedral structure.
Each carbon atom in graphite is covalently bound to three other carbon atoms, forming hexagonal sheets.
Other allotropes of carbon include buckminsterfullerene and graphene.
Allotropism also exists in other elements, such as oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur.
Oxygen can exist as diatomic oxygen, O2, which is the form that we breathe in and is vital for survival. In this allotrope, two oxygen atoms are held together by a double covalent bond.
Oxygen can also exist as ozone, O3, which forms the ozone layer in the Earth’s atmosphere.
Red phosphorus is an allotrope of phosphorus. Matches made of red phosphorus are known as safety matches – in order to ignite, it must be struck against the striking surface on the outside of the package.Before the introduction of red phosphorus, the match heads were usually made of white phosphorus – another allotrope of the element.The different colours arise from their different structures! White phosphorus consists of four phosphorus atoms, held together in a tetrahedral arrangement.Other allotropes of phosphorus also exist – black phosphorus and violet phosphorus.
Sulfur exists as many allotropes – the one that you’re most likely familiar with is S8, octasulfur, a bright yellow solid. Another solid allotrope of sulfur is hexasulfur, S6. Sulfur can also exist as gaseous allotropes – disulfur, S2, and trisulfur, S3.
Allotropism also exists in some metalloid elements and metals.

• Allotropes are different forms of the same elements that exist in the same state and hence have different structures.
• The element oxygen exists as two allotropes, diatomic oxygen, O2, and triatomic ozone, O3. At high altitudes in the earth's atmosphere, monatomic oxygen also exists but is unstable and reacts readily with other species as do all free radicals.
Different forms of oxygen in the atmosphere
In the gaseous state, oxygen can exist in a number of allotropic forms.
• Oxygen radicals O. These radicals (which have six electrons in the valence shell and two of these are unpaired electrons) are very unstable and reactive. When O2 is decomposed by UV light, energised oxygen atoms are formed. They release energy as two electrons unpair to form oxygen radicals. They only exist briefly as they are formed in the upper atmosphere (less than 15 km).
• Oxygen molecules O2. This is a very stable, diatomic form of oxygen that is necessary for respiration in all aerobic life forms.
• Ozone molecules O3. Ozone is poisonous and a powerful oxidant. It exists only in low concentrations in the troposphere. It readily dissociates into oxygen and energised oxygen atoms.

The topic of allotropes comes up frequently in chemistry. In this video we’ll define the term allotrope, look at examples, and then practice so we can easily recognize allotropes.
Here is the formal definition for allotropes:
Allotropes are different structural forms of the same element in the same physical state.
For example, O2 (g) and O3 (g) are allotropes. They are both made up of only Oxygen atoms, both are gases, but they have different structural formulas.
Something like H2O (l) and H2O2 (l) would not be considered allotropes. This is because H2O is made up of more than one type of element. The same reasoning applies to H2O2.
