A sub-orbital spaceflight is a spaceflight in which the spacecraft reaches space, but its trajectory intersects the atmosphere or surface of the gravitating body from which it was launched, so that it does not complete one orbital revolution.
For example, the path of an object launched from Earth that reaches 100km (62mi) above sea level, and then falls back to Earth, is considered a sub-orbital spaceflight. Some sub-orbital flights have been undertaken to test spacecraft and launch vehicles later intended for orbital spaceflight. Other vehicles are specifically designed only for sub-orbital flight; examples include manned vehicles such as the X-15 and SpaceShipOne, and unmanned ones such as ICBMs and sounding rockets.
This video touches on various aspects of suborbital rocket trajectories such as flight path angle, body elevation angle, launch angle, and more. Two simple demonstrations are provided to reinforce some of the concepts. This video is geared towards high school students with an interest in rocket flight and space. VSS Unity - First Suborbital Flight
VSS Unity, Virgin Galactic’s second SpaceShipTwo, completed its fourth powered flight on 13 December 2018, reaching an altitude of 82.7 km (51.4miles; 271,268 feet). VSS Unity was piloted by Virgin Galactic pilots Mark “Forger” Stucky and Frederick “CJ” Sturckow. NASA Flight Opportunities Program which flew four space science and technology experiments on VSS Unity.

Sub-Orbital Flight vs. Orbital Flight
This is an illustration of the basic difference between Sub-orbital flight, like Virgin Galactic will offer, and orbital flight, like the Space Shuttle or Soyuz. Sub-orbital flight will give passengers a few minutes of weightlessness between the time the rocket engine shuts down to the time the spacecraft begins to re-enter the atmosphere. An orbital vehicle, like the Space Shuttle must not only reach an altitude higher then the atmosphere but must also reach a speed of about 17,500 mph / 28,000 kph. It requires vastly more energy to reach orbital velocity then to simply reach space.
