Helvellyn (pronunciation: /hɛlˈvɛ.lɪn/) (possible meaning: pale yellow moorland) is a mountain in the English Lake District, the highest point of the Helvellyn range, a north-south line of mountains to the north of Ambleside, between the lakes of Thirlmere and Ullswater.
Helvellyn is the third-highest point both in England and in the Lake District, and access to Helvellyn is easier than to the two higher peaks of Scafell Pike and Sca Fell. The scenery includes three deep glacial coves and two sharp-topped ridges on the eastern side (Striding Edge and Swirral Edge).
The volcanic rocks of which the mountain is made were formed in the caldera of an ancient volcano, many of them in violently explosive eruptions, about 450 million years ago during the Ordovician period. During the last ice age these rocks were carved by glaciers to create the landforms seen today.
Since the end of the last ice age, small populations of arctic-alpine plants have survived in favourable spots on rock ledges high in the eastern coves. Rare to Britain species of alpine butterfly, the Mountain Ringlet, also live on and around Helvellyn.
Helvellyn via Striding Edge - An Epic Knife Edge Ridge Hike in the Lake District!
Hi everyone! In this video we are climbing Helvellyn via Striding Edge which is an epic knife edge ridge hike in the Lake District, England! Helvellyn is the third highest point in the Lake District and in England, standing at 950m above sea level, and is a very popular mountain due to the number of different approaches you can take to get to the top!
For our video we focus on the ascent via Striding Edge which is perhaps the most spectacular way to the top. The route is a Grade 1 scramble so requires the use of your hands in places and should only be attempted in good weather conditions unless you are an experienced hiker. This route can be combined with a descent down Swirral Edge on the adjacent side of the mountain for a brilliant circular walk!
However, there are many easier routes ...

Julia Bradbury walks the Wainwright Walk up Helvellyn
This was part of the first series of walking programmes with Julia produced by Skyworks for BBC4. It was deemed as one of the most successful of its time. The route starts at the church in Patterdale village. The walk then heads away from Ullswater taking a gentle stroll along Grizedale Valley. This walk then leads you to the hole-in-the-wall. Up ahead is the vast combe of Helvellyn. From up here you start you ascent up Striding Edge. You have a last short steep scramble as you reach the top. The summit is a short gentle stroll along and then you have made it! A personalised dvd with the full programme can be bought on http://theoutdoorguide.co.uk/product/personalised-wainwright-walks-series-2-dvd/ C30

Striding Edge - Actually difficult or just hype?
Worth the hype? Judge for yourself.
Helvellyn via the Striding Edge is one of those routes that came up EVERY TIME I opened social media.
People of all skill levels were telling epic tales of climbing the third-highest mountain in England via the Striding Edge. The hardest route to Helvellyn's summit.
So naturally, I absolutely had to see what all the fuss is about.
The route I chose was a horseshoe that starts from Red Tarn, a lake, and goes up Striding Edge to Helvellyn's summit and comes down Swirral Edge, another ridge.
As I was making my way along the ridge I overheard people's opinion of the route.
From excitement and joy to fear and dread, I heard it all.
My opinion?
It's worth the hype

Striding Edge Ridge Walk, 4K Lake District UK
Hi just a short video I put together of my favourite clips from climbing Helvellyn Today. The route I took included Striding Edge which is a ridge line near to the summit of Helvellyn in the English Lake District. It'sknown as a grade 1 scramble, and having done Crib Goch Ridge on mount Snowdon, Striding Edge is a lot easier and just an enjoyable walk that you can make as hard as you like by climbing the pinnacles and staying off the paths!

Hi just a short video I put together of my favourite clips from climbing Helvellyn Today. The route I took included Striding Edge which is a ridge line near to the summit of Helvellyn in the English Lake District. It'sknown as a grade 1 scramble, and having done Crib Goch Ridge on mount Snowdon, Striding Edge is a lot easier and just an enjoyable walk that you can make as hard as you like by climbing the pinnacles and staying off the paths!
A stunning epic of my journey to Helvellyn in late February this year (2023), combination filming on an iPhone 14 Pro Max and my DJI Mini 3Pro, in stunning 4K as always.

Just a little vlog stomping around the phenomenal Helvellyn via Striding Edge. This is my second time on Helvellyn and for the second time there were no views to be seen but I had the best day with Lizzie with out head in the clouds and another QMD towards my mountain leader qualification ticked off!
