Venus Smiles I Sound Sculpture Performance
A situated sound sculpture for communal performance.
www.tabitacargnel.com
London-based artist Tabita Cargnel explores the connection between architecture and noise pollution in her latest project Venus Smiles, which was displayed at the Tate Britains’s Tate Late last June.
The installation is a sound sculpture that can be played as a musical instrument by multiple people simultaneously, irrespective of whether the players are trained musicians or not.
Named after the short story by James Ballard, the sculpture is formed of copper tubes connected by musical strings and held together in a static system – a phenomenon called ‘tensegrity’ – appearing as if the tubes are floating in the air.
The sculpture is consciously designed to be connected to the space it sits in, through invisible vi...

The tubes vibrate to certain frequencies and the strings can be played through plugging or bowing. Originally the system is designed to be activated by voice and freely hanging tubes would pick up the vibrations in the air and continue ringing in the same frequency for a long time.
Visually, the sculpture appears elegant despite the fact that the wires and copper tubes are originally building materials, usually used in property construction. I aim to raise awareness of the sounds we make.
‘I […] began to dance to the strange abstracted music, for some reason as beautiful now as Lorraine Drexel‘s wistful eyes. „Did you say it was all over? Carol, it‘s only just beginning. The whole world will be singing.“ ’ - James Graham Ballard in his short story 'Venus Smiles' in 1957

Venus Smiles is an acoustically situated sound sculpture for communal performance. Ringing copper tubes, suspended in an architectural tensegrity system, can be played as a musical instrument by using your hands, a bow or your voice. The Venus Smiles instrument is tuned to the room, so it shares its resonance via invisible links using vibrations which have been specifically designed to amplify the acoustic properties of the room and vice versa. This means that the sound excites the air and the walls vibrate when a string is bowed. Even if the instrument is not being played, since it is acoustically situated in the room, the instrument and the space are connected by their resonance.
Traditionally, architecture is designed to dampen the sound of the material as opposed to amplifying it. But in this instance the vibrations between the bodies are intentional.
The suspended copper tubes can ring like a bell but also similarly to the resonating body of an acoustic instrument. The lengths of tube are designed to resonate with sympathetic harmonic frequencies such that musical chords and timbres can be built into the structure.
The geometric sculpture can be played by multiple players. The transparency of the system allows each performer to communicate musically through facial expressions and movements while performing. Also, the integral aspect of the tensegrity system enhances the communal music-making: Pressure applied through one persons playing on any side of the system will modulate the tension of the whole. If one person is bowing a string, for instance, another person can change its pitch by pushing a tube or bowing another string.
Venus Smiles makes the world of acoustic resonance in architectural structures accessible to everyone; also people without a musical background can create immersive sounds which communicate in a language beyond words. The musical architecture is tangible and creates novel interactions with sound and space.

Parker, Dominic, Liam and me playing the sculpture
--
What makes us feel unwell about sounds in the cities and buildings and why does silence make us feel nervous? How do we inhabit and contribute to our sonic environments? How does the designer, the architect, and the engineer contribute to this?
--
'Venus Smiles’ is an architectural sculpture made of copper tubes, suspended with wire. An instrument that you can play with your hands, a bow and your voice.
