A state health agency (SHA), or state department of health, is a department or agency of the state governments of the United States focused on public health. The state secretary of health is a constitutional or at times a statutory official in several states of the United States. The position is the chief executive official for the state's state health agency (or equivalent), chief administrative officer for the state's Board of Health (or equivalent), or both.
A health department or health ministry is a part of government which focuses on issues related to the general health of the citizenry. Subnational entities, such as states, counties and cities, often also operate a health department of their own. Health departments perform food inspections and other health related inspections (the person who performs this job is often called a public health inspector), vaccination programs, free STD and HIV tests, tobacco enforcement and cessation programs, and other medical assistance programs. Health departments also compile statistics about health issues of their area. In 1986, several of the worlds' national health departments met to establish an international guideline by which health departments operate. The meeting was in Ottawa, Canada, and hence the guidelines established are known as the Ottawa Charter. The Ottawa Charter was designed to ‘achieve Health for All’.
Information about the department's functions and/or government funding allocation could be found in the Administrative Arrangements Orders, the annual Portfolio Budget Statements and in the Department's annual reports.
According to the 1921 Order of Council, reproduced by the National Archives of Australia, the Department was responsible for:
The Administration of the Quarantine Act.
The investigation of the causes of disease and death; the establishment and control of laboratories for this purpose.
The control of the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories and the commercial distribution of the products manufactured in these Laboratories.
The methods of prevention of disease.
The collection of sanitary data and the investigation of all factors affecting health in industries.
The Department of Health (Manx:Rheynn Slaynt) was a department of the Isle of Man Government. It was created on 1 April 2010, taking on the health services and public health functions of the former Department of Health and Social Security. On 1 August 2012 the Isle of Man's Mental Health Services were transferred from the Department of Social Care to the Department of Health, which also saw the creation of a post for a second Member for the Department with specific responsibility for Mental Health. On 2 December 2013 as part of the Council of Ministers' plans to modernize ministerial government it was announced that the Department of Health and the Department of Social Care (with the exception of Social Security, which would move to Treasury) would merge on 1 April, subject to the approval of Tynwald. The move was by and large a reversal of one element of the restructuring of the Isle of Man Government in April 2010 which saw the former Department of Health and Social Security split to form the Department of Health and the Department of Social Care.

Washington State Department of Health COVID Response
Washington was the first state to have the first case of COVID-19 in the continental United States. Our lab in Shoreline was one of the best in the country, but it still was strained by doing a lot of manual processes. That system was never designed to accept the volume of test results. Microsoft brought in architects, engineers, and a tool kit, and we created COVID-19 dashboards that have won awards, and they're some of the best in the world.
