The name is recorded in 1062 as Lambehitha, meaning 'landing place for lambs', and in 1255 as Lambeth. In the Domesday Book, Lambeth is called "Lanchei", likely in error. The name refers to a harbour where lambs were either shipped from or to. It is formed from the Old English 'lamb' and 'hythe'.South Lambeth is recorded as Sutlamehethe in 1241 and North Lambeth is recorded in 1319 as North Lamhuth. The marshland in the area, known as Lambeth Marshe, was drained in the 18th century but is remembered in the Lower Marsh street name. Sometime after the opening of Waterloo railway station in 1848 the locality around the station and Lower Marsh became known as Waterloo.
Quarantine at Stangate Creek River Medway. The Story of Sidney Bernard & why we should remember him
It's a misty morning on the marshes and somewhere out there is the grave of 27 year old Sidney Bernard, a ship's surgeon, who died under tragic circumstances 178 years ago on 9th October 1845. Not far from where he lies are hundreds of other unmarked graves. By telling the story of these men and women we can shine a light on them.
We visited this area at the end of September to ensure we did not disturb any breeding birds. Permission should always be sought to venture here, and no locations are given away in this video. I have consulted various sources of information for this video and thanks goes out to all of them.

Open days at Stangate House and Garden
Discover Stangate Garden, one of the Hill’s best kept secrets. Bring along provisions for a picnic and spend the day enjoying the tranquil garden setting.
The garden was designed by Elsie Cornish, a renowned garden designer who landscaped with a unique sense of colour and composition. Home to one of Australia’s largest oak trees where people have picnicked for over a hundred years, the gardens were also recognised by the International Camellia Society in 2012 as an International Camellia Garden of Excellence. While the camellias are in full bloom in early spring the garden has something magical to offer visitors anytime of the year.
