Flight by John Steinbeck | Short Story Tuesday
Today I'm talking about another story from one of my favorite authors. Steinbeck writes about Pepe Torres, a young man who is running from a posse that wants to kill him because of a crime he committed. I like how Steinbeck writes about desperation and includes some potentially supernatural elements. However, I think he focuses too much on the journey and the environment and not enough on telling a complete story. Give it a read anyways.

HUMILITY: A KEY TO MATURITY (John Steinbeck’s Flight Analysis)
Maturity begins with humility. It is an unending process in which no one is too mature to grow. – Kap Sian
Gordon argues, “What is important in ‘Flight’ is not the crime itself but Pepe’s mental and physical response to it, how he deports himself when the circumstances are propitious for a boy to become a man.” Reading the story, it can be said that in the beginning, the main character acted with pride, there is the trace of arrogance. He insisted that he is already a man and is already mature to take up the roles given to him.
This is seen in three scenes in the story. First, with the chores given to him by his mom and that is to go to town, one task that only adults can perform, he accepts it happily and even insists that he needs to use his father’s hatband and handkerchief as a sign ...

John Steinbeck's "Flight" is a compelling narrative that delves into themes of pride, violence, and the clash between personal ambition and societal constraints. Set in the American West, the story centers on a young man named Pepe, whose journey is marked by a quest for maturity and recognition, ultimately leading to tragic consequences.Pepe is introduced as a figure full of youthful bravado and a yearning for independence. His sense of self-worth is deeply tied to his ability to assert control and prove himself, a theme that Steinbeck explores with a nuanced understanding of human nature. The story begins with Pepe's father sending him off to run errands, a task that, while mundane, sets in motion a chain of events that reveal the protagonist's internal struggles and societal pressures. The central conflict of "Flight" arises when Pepe finds himself entangled in a violent altercation with a local man, an incident that exposes the volatility of his character and his inability to control his impulses. Steinbeck portrays Pepe as a complex figure, whose actions are driven not only by personal pride but also by the external expectations of masculinity and honor. This conflict serves as a catalyst for the story's exploration of the destructive nature of unchecked pride and the harsh realities of social expectations.Steinbeck's depiction of Pepe's rural environment contributes significantly to the story's atmosphere. The setting is not just a backdrop but an active element that shapes the characters' behaviors and decisions. The harsh and unforgiving landscape mirrors the internal desolation of Pepe, amplifying his sense of isolation and desperation. Steinbeck uses vivid imagery to underscore the starkness of this environment, emphasizing the contrasts between Pepe's inner turmoil and the external world. As the narrative progresses, Pepe's actions become increasingly desperate, culminating in a series of choices that seal his fate. His flight from justice is marked by a growing sense of inevitability and doom, reflecting the tragic dimension of his character. Steinbeck's use of irony becomes apparent as Pepe's initial quest for dignity and respect leads to his ultimate downfall. The irony lies in the fact that Pepe's attempts to assert his manhood and gain respect result in his own alienation and demise. The theme of flight in the story extends beyond the physical act of running away. It represents Pepe's attempt to escape not only from the immediate consequences of his actions but also from his own psychological and emotional constraints. This flight is symbolic of his inability to reconcile his personal desires with the expectations placed upon him by society. Steinbeck's portrayal of Pepe's internal conflict is both poignant and insightful, highlighting the broader human struggle between individual desires and societal demands.Steinbeck's writing style in "Flight" is characterized by its simplicity and directness, which serves to enhance the emotional impact of the story. The narrative is straightforward yet deeply resonant, capturing the essence of human frailty and the complexities of personal and social identity. Steinbeck's choice of language and tone contributes to the story's powerful portrayal of a young man's tragic journey, making "Flight" a profound exploration of the themes of pride, violence, and the quest for personal significance. In conclusion, "Flight" by John Steinbeck is a richly layered story that examines the interplay between personal ambition and societal expectations. Through the character of Pepe, Steinbeck offers a poignant commentary on the destructive potential of pride and the struggle to navigate one's identity within a challenging social landscape. The story's evocative setting, complex character dynamics, and thematic depth make it a compelling and enduring piece of literature that continues to resonate with readers.

First, with the chores given to him by his mom and that is to go to town, one task that only adults can perform, he accepts it happily and even insists that he needs to use his father’s hatband and handkerchief as a sign of his maturity. Second, he even wanted to prove his manhood by drinking wine with someone. This someone then throws insults at him which brought out his violent nature that eventually killed this former. Not accepting the words can clearly tell us that he is indeed acting with pride as he wanted to manifest something. Lastly, he elopes to the mountain where he faced challenges or might say, “Consequences”. Thinking about it, would there be differences if he takes responsibility for his actions?
Yet, that is the beauty of the story wherein Pepe, an insisting and arrogant youth in the beginning, learned the ways of men through an unlikely journey. He lost every
possible thing that surely is needed for his survival, that can make him look strong and can fight back. The denouement of the story is presented with the fact that he needs to crawl on his stomach, wriggling and worming toward the top of the next ridge which can be said that is a sign of humility.
The story ends with the evidence that he learns humility as he faced his final verdict and, like a man, is able to accept the consequences of his actions, a proof of maturity that us readers should reflect upon.
