The city centre includes the main shopping centres (the Mander Centre and Wulfrun Centre), the Civic Centre (the headquarters of the city council), the main campus of the University of Wolverhampton and the terminus of the Midland Metro. St Peter's Church is in that part of the ward: it is the principal Anglican church in the city, and gives the ward its name.
Wolverhampton (i/ˌwʊlvərˈhæmptən/) is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands, England. At the 2011 census, it had population of 249,470. People from Wolverhampton are known as "Wulfrunians".
Historically part of Staffordshire, the city is named after Wulfrun, who founded the town in 985, from the Anglo-SaxonWulfrūnehēantūn ("Wulfrūn's high or principal enclosure or farm"). Prior to the Norman Conquest, the area's name appears only as variants of Heantune or Hamtun, the prefix Wulfrun or similar appearing in 1070 and thereafter. Alternatively, the city may have earned its original name from Wulfereēantūn ("Wulfhere's high or principal enclosure or farm") after the Mercian King, who tradition tells us established an abbey in 659, though no evidence of an abbey has been found.
The variation Wolveren Hampton is seen in medieval records, e.g. in 1381.

St Peters Walsall Church Plant Story
St Peter's Walsall opened in 1841, and it's had a great history in our community. Prayers were answered and closure avoided when a team came at Christmas 2013 to re-start the church. Now we're growing again, and reaching out into our community with some really good news. This video, made when the church's status was fully restored in 2018, tells the story.

New to the 2013 programme will be a guided tour of Bilston Town Hall, guided walk around Wolverhampton's city centre heritage and an opportunity to see the medieval tower at St Leonards Church, while a special blue plaque will be unveiled at West Park.
Councillor Elias Mattu, Wolverhampton City Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure and Communities, said: "The Heritage Open Days programme allows people to delve into Wolverhampton's past and discover unknown secrets about the city.
"There are numerous opportunities to learn about industry, art, faith and sport across the city and with, most of the events being guided, it gives people the chance to ask questions and really learn something new about the city.
"We want the people of Wolverhampton and in the surrounding areas to see places that aren't normally open to the public or at least enjoy access to popular buildings for free with this series of events so that they can unlock the history to Wolverhampton."
Heritage Open Days runs from Thursday to Sunday, 12-15 September, 2013.
