St. Joseph's College was a seminary of the Archdiocese of San Francisco at Mountain View, California opened in September 1924. It was also referred to as St. Joseph's Seminary. It was run by the Sulpician Fathers.

Its creation was supervised by Archbishop Edward J. Hanna. Hanna ordered the purchase of 700 acres and the seminary was considered "the jewel of his accomplishments."

The seminary buildings were severely damaged by the Loma Prieta earthquake on 17 October 1989. The seminary was permanently closed on June 30, 1991. The site is now part of Rancho San Antonio County Park

St Joseph's College, Upper Norwood

St Joseph's College is a boys' secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in the Upper Norwood area of the London Borough of Croydon, England. The school is a single sex educational establishment for boys up to the age of 16 and in cooperation with Norbury Manor High School for Girls, operates a co-educational sixth-form for boys and girls aged 16 to 18.

History

The school trustees are the De La Salle Brothers. The College was founded in 1855 and was located on High Street in Clapham between 1855 and 1888. The school has been on its present site in Beulah Hill since 1904. The De La Salle brothers were all poor from the help of John Baptist De La Salle they built a similar school for boys because there was already a similar school for girls and they named it after St Joseph.

Construction

The current Hall and Science Block was constructed in 1964, followed by a Design and Technology department in 1975, which has since been refurbished. The school features a newly built History block which includes four Classrooms and an office.It has been a voluntary aided school as of 1973. In 2003, it became a Mathematics and Computing specialist school.

St Joseph's College, Dumfries

St. Joseph's College is situated on the Craigs Road in Dumfries, south west Scotland. It is a Roman Catholic secondary school. The school began as a Catholic boys' boarding school run by Marist Brothers. It is near St. Michael's Primary School and is one of four secondary schools in Dumfries.

History

St. Joseph's College was founded in 1875 as both a boarding school and the first Novitiate for the training of Marist Brothers in Great Britain. Brother Walfrid, the man who founded Celtic Football Club, also helped to found the school. The school became part of the state school system in 1981, but still accepts Catholic students as priority. The school was a boys' school to begin with, and the first female pupils were admitted as day pupils in the early 1980s.

In 2012 a teacher was caught having sex with a pupil in a lay-by on a busy stretch of road just outside Dumfries. She has since been struck off the teaching register.

Buildings

The school was originally located elsewhere in Dumfries but was moved to its current location when a local businessman bought the land and donated it to the Marist Brothers. Numerous expansions to the original build have been made: the assembly hall, extensions to the mathematics and French departments, a new separate building for the RE classrooms, and another new building which contains the dining hall and physical education halls. After the school became public, the buildings transferred to Dumfries and Galloway Council in January 2008, following the sale of part of the school playing fields at Maryfield, for the new medical centre at Gillbrae. The Marist Brothers then had no involvement with the school.

Dumfries (Scottish Parliament constituency)

Dumfries was a constituency of the Scottish Parliament (Holyrood). It elected one Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) by the plurality (first past the post) method of election. It was also one of nine constituencies in the South of Scotland electoral region, which elects seven additional members, in addition to the nine constituency MSPs, to produce a form of proportional representation for the region as a whole.

From the Scottish Parliament election, 2011, the Dumfries constituency was abolished, with the city being divided between two new constituencies; Dumfriesshire, and Galloway and West Dumfries.

Dumfries, officially the Town of Dumfries, is a town in Prince William County, Virginia. The population was 4,961 at the 2010 United States Census.

Geography

Dumfries is located at 38°34′4″N 77°19′29″W / 38.56778°N 77.32472°W / 38.56778; -77.32472 (38.567853, -77.324591).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km²), all of it land. The town is situated 78 miles north of the state capital, Richmond. It is 25 miles/40 km south of central Washington, D.C.

History

Dumfries history began as early as 1690 when Richard Gibson erected a gristmill on Quantico Creek. A customhouse and warehouse followed in 1731, and many others cropped up along the estuary by 1732. The Town of Dumfries was formally established on 60 acres (240,000 m²) of land at the head of the harbor of Quantico Creek, provided by John Graham. He named the town after his birthplace, Dumfries, Scotland.

After much political maneuvering, the General Assembly established Dumfries as the first of seven townships in the county. Dumfries received its charter on May 11, 1749, making it the oldest continuously chartered town in Virginia.
