Saint Benedict born in Nursia is called the Father of Western Monasticism because his life set the example on how to live for many over 1500 years. It all started when he left his studies at Rome for a more dedicated Christian life. After finding a place in a small city, his reputation began to grow out of hand as he performed miracles and lived a life worth taking note of. Finally this became too much for him and he set off for Subiaco, but before he got there he met a man named Romanos. Being introduced to the monk's habit, he would fully embrace the idea of monasticism for three years.
After three years he would give his first try at being an abbot. After a failure to launch, and almost being poisoned, he went back to his cave. But now his reputation had grown again and after more people came to learn from him, he became abbot again, this time creating 12 homes with 12 monks at each. It was at this time that he would create The Rule of Saint Benedict. With the creation of this rule, he moved to Monte Cassino to create his ideal monastery. All men living under one house, under one rule, as one family.
Saint Benedict would forever change the way monasticism was practiced in the West. For over 1500 years monks have followed the Rule outlined by Benedict. Although covered only briefly here to point out some of the basic details, you will find in the resources section many areas to dive into St Benedict at a much deeper level. You will also find in the resources tab more information on the Order of Saint Benedict, the Catholic Encyclopedia's description of Benedict's life, some Youtube videos connected to Benedict, and finally a free translated version of Saint Benedict's Rules.

St. Benedict of Nursia
(Commemorated March 14)
(Early life)
The venerable St. Benedict was born in 480 A.D. from rich and pious parents in the province of Nursia in Umbria in the Apennine mountains of Italy. His name in Latin means "blessed" and he is considered the founder of Orthodox monasticism in the West. He drafted the charter of Western Monasticism on the basis of the works of St. Basil the Great, St. Pachomios and St. John Cassian the Roman.
When he was 14 years of age, the Saint’s parents sent him to Rome to study. Unsettled by the immorality around him, he decided to devote himself to a different sort of life.
(Becoming a monk)
At first Benedict settled near the church of the holy Apostle Peter in the village of Effedum, but news of his ascetic life compelled him to go farther into the mountains. At the age of 20, he became a monk and lived in asceticism in a cave at an altitude of 600 meters, for 3 years.
It was there that he encountered the hermit Romanus, who had tonsured him into monasticism and directed him to live in a remote cave at Subiaco. From time to time, the hermit would bring him food.
For 3 years the Saint waged a harsh struggle with temptations and conquered them. He devoted himself to asceticism, prayer and study and became a chosen vessel of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. People soon began to gather to him, thirsting to live under his guidance. But soon afterwards, he was forced to leave the Monastery, since those who elected him considered him too strict, so they slandered him and attempted to poison him. The Saint miraculously survived and returned to his beloved quietude.
(Becoming Abbot)
His reputation spread quickly and the monks of the Sacred Monastery of Vicovaro asked him to be their abbot. The Saint gave in to their request. He received them and founded a Cenobium, in which he applied his monastic "rule.” The number of disciples grew so much, that the Saint divided them into twelve communities. For better guidance of the monks he founded twelve small cenobitic Brotherhoods. Each community was comprised of twelve monks and was a separate skete. Each one of these had a head and eleven other monks, but he was the spiritual father of all.
The Saint gave each skete an Abbot from among his experienced disciples, and only the novice monks remained with Benedict for instruction.
Here it is worth noting that the Saint called his Cenobium a "School" in which, as he said, "we are taught to serve the Lord.”
Abbot Benedict was slandered again and defamed by a certain priest. And to not create problems for his Brotherhoods and the monks he again departed into his beloved stillness.
Finally he settled in Campagna and on Mount Cassino he founded the Monte Cassino Monastery, which for a long time was a centre of theological education for the Western Church. The Monastery possessed a remarkable library. Abbot Benedict wrote his Rule, based on the experience of life of the Eastern desert-dwellers and the precepts of St. John Cassian the Roman (February 29).
The Rule of Saint Benedict dominated Western monasticism (*this was Orthodox as it was before the schism). The Rule prescribed the renunciation of personal possessions, as well as unconditional obedience, and constant work. It was considered the duty of older monks to teach the younger and to copy ancient manuscripts. This helped to preserve many memorable writings from the first centuries of Christianity.
Every new monk was required to live as a novice for a year, to learn the monastic Rule and to become acclimated to monastic life. Every deed required a blessing. The head of this cenobitic Monastery is the Abbot. He discerns, teaches, and explains. The Abbot solicits the advice of the older, experienced brethren, but he makes the final decisions. Keeping the monastic Rule was strictly binding for everyone and was regarded as an important step on the way to perfection.
(Falling asleep)
The end of his life was peaceful. He was forbearing, full of love, endowed with the gift of wonderworking and a continuous benefactor to all without discrimination. St. Benedict was granted by the Lord the gift of foresight and wonderworking. He healed many by his prayers. The monk foretold the day of his death around 547 A.D.
St. Benedict’s sister, St. Scholastica (February 10), also became famous for her strict ascetic life and was numbered among the Saints.
(His life explained by St. Gregory the Dialogist)
The main source for his Life is the second Dialogue of St. Gregory in his book titled “Dialogues,” makes reference to the life and miracles of St. Benedict of Nursia.
His life and deeds give us the opportunity to highlight the following:
