The First Epistle of Paul to Timothy, usually referred to simply as First Timothy and often written 1 Timothy, is one of three letters in the New Testament of the Bible often grouped together as the Pastoral Epistles, along with Second Timothy and Titus. The letter, traditionally attributed to the Apostle Paul, consists mainly of counsels to his younger colleague and delegate Timothy regarding his ministry in Ephesus (1:3). These counsels include instructions on the organization of the Church and the responsibilities resting on certain groups of leaders therein as well as exhortations to faithfulness in maintaining the truth amid surrounding errors.
Composition
The author of First Timothy has been traditionally identified as the Apostle Paul. He is named as the author of the letter in the text (1:1). Nineteenth and twentieth century scholarship questioned the authenticity of the letter, with many scholars suggesting that First Timothy, along with Second Timothy and Titus, are not original to Paul, but rather an unknown Christian writing some time in the late-first-to-mid-2nd century. Most scholars now affirm this view.
Timothy (Greek: Τιμόθεος; Timótheos, meaning "honouring God" or "honored by God" ) was an early Christian evangelist and the first first-centuryChristianbishop of Ephesus, whom tradition relates died around the year AD 97.
He was from the Lycaonian city of Lystra in Asia Minor, born of a Jewish mother who had become a Christian believer, and a Greek father. The Apostle Paul met him during his second missionary journey and he became Paul’s companion and co-worker along with Silas. The New Testament indicates that Timothy traveled with Saint Paul, who was also his mentor. Paul entrusted him with important assignments. He is addressed as the recipient of the First and Second Epistles to Timothy.
Life
Timothy was a native of Lystra in Lycaonia, (Anatolia). When Paul and Barnabas first visited Lystra, Paul healed one crippled from birth, leading many of the inhabitants to accept his teaching. When he returned a few years later with Silas, Timothy was already a respected member of the Christian congregation, as were his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice, both Jews. In 2 Timothy 1:5, his mother and grandmother are noted as eminent for their piety and faith. Timothy is said to have been acquainted with the Scriptures since childhood. In 1 Corinthians 16:10 there is a suggestion that he was by nature reserved and timid. ("When Timothy comes, see that you put him at ease among you, for he is doing the work of the Lord...")

ABOUT ST. TIMOTHY
St. Timothy was born around the year 17 A.D., in Lystra. His mother was a Jew and his father was Greek. Though his father was not Jewish, Timothy’s holy mother and grandmother ensured that Timothy was well-educated in Scripture during Timothy’s childhood.
St. Paul visited Lystra with Barnabas and brought many people to conversion there. By the time of St. Paul’s next journey to Lystra with Silas, Timothy was a prominent member of the Christian community in the city. Timothy’s mother and grandmother were also prominent members of the Christian community.
Not long after this, Timothy became St. Paul’s companion and helper in preaching. Because Timothy’s father was not a Jew, Timothy was not circumcised. So St. Paul said that Timothy should be circumcised in order that the Jews Timothy would be preaching to would not find Timothy scandalous. Timothy agreed to be circumcised.
In 52 A.D., Timothy left behind his home in order to accompany Paul and Silas to Macedonia. St. Augustine later noted Timothy’s selflessness and zeal in choosing to leave behind his parents and home in exchange for a life of poverty.
It is likely that Timothy was prone to illness, as Paul suggests that Timothy should drink some wine to help his stomach.
Timothy and Paul separated when Paul had to escape from the angry Jews in Berea. Timothy at first remained in Berea, but soon after he went to Thessalonica to encourage the persecuted Christians there. His report to Paul on the conditions of the Christians in Thessalonica led Paul to write the First Letter to the Thessalonians.
After this, Timothy went to Corinth. He was there with Paul when Paul wrote the letter to the Romans. In 64 A.D., Paul left Timothy in Ephesus as the bishop of the Christian people there.
As Paul awaited his martyrdom in prison, he asked for his close friend Timothy to come give him a last goodbye.
The writer of Hebrews implies that Timothy was imprisoned at least once during his time in ministry, as the Hebrews author mentions Timothy being released from prison at the end of the letter.
Details about Timothy’s death are not known for certain, but tradition holds that he was martyred in Ephesus because he tried to put a stop to a procession that honored a pagan goddess. It is thought that Timothy was beaten, dragged through streets, and stoned to death by angry pagans around the year 97 A.D. when he was about eighty years old.

In gratitude to God and my patron Saint, the Apostle Timothy, I present here his Life followed by his Akathist. St. Timothy was the close disciple and spiritual companion of the holy Apostle Paul. In gratitude to God and my patron Saint, the Apostle Timothy, I present here his Life followed by his Akathist. St. Timothy was the close disciple and spiritual companion of the holy Apostle Paul. St. Paul ordained St. Timothy and appointed him as Bishop of Ephesus (in present day Turkey). Zealous for Christ and expand His Church, the great Apostle confronted pagans during their festival in Ephesus, preached to them the Gospel, and in response was chased out of the city, beaten, and killed. His holy body was buried near his other Apostolic brother, St. John the Theologian. The text of his Life comes from the Synaxarion.
This Akathist hymn is beautifully written by Natalia J. Garland. I was not able to find an Akathist to St. Timothy that is officially blessed for use in public worship, but this Akathist was very well written, appears very accurate, and stirs my heart to gratitude and prayer. You can find this Akathist and others at: https://akathisthymns.wordpress.com/apostle-timothy/
Akathist begins at 5:52
