Spies, informants and new enemies - Today’s intelligence agencies | DW Documentary
Intelligence agencies are influencing governments and spying on countries with no regard for the law. And they are able to remain nearly invisible, in the process. Are they the new superpowers?
The last time intelligence agencies commanded as much power as they do today was during the Cold War. Technological innovations mean that more sophisticated warfare is now a reality. It is not just about Russia and the USA anymore. We may be entering a new era of unrest.
The U.S. has lost more spies and informants since 2010 than at any other time since the Cold War. Leaders of German intelligence agencies also acknowledge that they have once again fallen upon tough times. George Blake was the embodiment of the quintessential British gentleman. Charismatic, intelligent, and radiating charm, he was, to MI6, the very model of an intelligence officer.
However, beneath this polished exterior lay a mastermind of deception. Enthralled by the promise of a Communist utopia and disillusioned by NATO military tactics during the Korean War, Blake turned his back on his homeland, betraying national secrets and fellow agents to the Soviets during the tense 1950s era of the Cold War.
Unlike many of those whom he betrayed, Blake went on to enjoy a long life in Moscow, courtesy of the Kremlin. With decades to ponder his life’s choices, he harbou...

In 1986, a chilling revelation sent shockwaves through the FBI's Soviet counterintelligence section in Washington. Two prized Soviet informants, Valery Martynov and Sergei Motorin, had been compromised. Once exposed, the men were lured back to Moscow, and brutally executed - a bullet in the head for each, the KGB's grim signature for traitors.
The loss of the two agents referred to affectionately within the FBI as ‘M&M’ marked an abrupt end to what had become routine covert meetings and intelligence exchanges.

한국인, 러시아서 간첩 혐의 첫 체포 모스크바에 구금
Russia's state media says that a South Korean man was arrested earlier this year, and is currently being detained on charges of spying.
Moscow has been detaining several foreign nationals since its invasion of Ukraine, but it's the first such case to be reported involving a South Korean national.
Our foreign affairs correspondent Bae Eun-ji has more.
Russia has detained a South Korean man, on suspicions of espionage.
The state-run media outlet, Tass news agency reported late on Monday night that the man, identified as Baek Won-soon was arrested in Vladivostok earlier this year, for "handing over classified information to foreign intelligence agencies."

Money, data and access are proving to be major factors in determining who actually wields power. The 2016 U.S. election made this clear: U.S. intelligence agencies are certain that Russian intelligence helped elect Donald Trump.
But the U.S. has lost old spheres of influence and allies are increasingly pursuing their own agendas. Can President Biden make his country a force for order in the world, again? And what does that mean for political hot spots and potential conflicts with China, Iran, and Russia? And for allies like Saudi Arabia and Turkey? Will Western intelligence agencies regain the power they once exerted? Wars fought with drone and hacker attacks, increasingly delegated power, and surveillance could push these conflicts to their tipping point.

With decades to ponder his life’s choices, he harboured no regrets. To the very end, he remained a contented spy, his conscience unburdened, believing that in the world of espionage, no one is truly innocent.

Parallel to this, the CIA, ensconced across the Potomac in Langley, grappled with its own nightmare. Over the years, dozens of their operatives in the Soviet Union had suddenly gone dark, were executed or imprisoned.
The FBI scrambled to form an elite investigative team to unravel the mystery. Yet, as the years wore on and the puzzle remained unsolved, the unsettling possibility of the traitor being one of their own lingered in the air like a bad smell.
Determined to root out the mole, experienced analysts within the FBI’s Soviet unit delved into archives of debriefings and reports, searching for a pattern, a clue, anything that might reveal a link to the betrayer. They honed in on an innocent agent, meanwhile the culprit, who was outwardly a devout Catholic, a loving husband, father of 6, and a trusted FBI agent, harboured a perilous secret.
Robert Philip Hanssen’s decades-long path of treachery is considered the worst intelligence disaster in FBI history. This is his story.

Baek reportedly moved from China to Vladivostok in January, where he was arrested by the Russian Federal Security Service a few days after his arrival.
In late February, he was transferred to Moscow, and is being held in custody at Lefortovo Prison.
Seoul's foreign ministry said Tuesday that it has been providing consular assistance since it became aware of the arrest.
But it refused to comment further on any details, including why he was arrested and when the South Korean government was notified of the matter.
"Our government has been communicating with Russia, so that our citizen can safely return home to his family as soon as possible."
Sources in Vladivostok have reportedly told South Korean local media outlets that Baek was a religious worker and that he had been indirectly supporting North Korean laborers working in Russia, helping them escape.
This is the first reported case involving a South Korean national, but is just the latest in a series of arrests of foreigners made by the Russian authorities, since the start of the war in Ukraine.
American Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was detained last March on espionage charges, and another journalist Alsu Kurmsasheva, who holds U.S. and Russian citizenship, was also arrested for spreading "false information" about the Russian military.
This latest detention has sparked concerns that it could worsen already strained relations between South Korea and Russia.
