From the Vault: U.S. Army .30-40 Krag
Before the M1903 Springfield, even before the Lee Navy Model of 1895, there was the Springfield Model 1892-99, better known as the .30-40 Krag, the U.S. military's first bolt action rifle. Derived from the Danish Krag-Jørgensen rifle, the American Krag was chambered in the U.S. military's first smokeless powder cartridge, the .30-40 Krag. Roy Hill tells us about his personal Krag, which is still in its original military configuration, never having been "sporterized." Roy demonstrates the rifle's features: a smooth, easy-operating bolt, a unique side-loading internal magazine, a rear sight graduated out to 2,000 yards (!), and a magazine cutoff lever for operating as a single-shot.

Are There Still Cheap Krags out There? Searching Online for a Krag Jorgensen/ Springfield Model 1892
Are you looking for a Krag Jorgensen, specifically the Springfield Model 1892,1894, or even 1899? Yep, they are getting hard to find, in the full length form. And if you do find them, they are pretty expensive. In this video, I search around for a cheap antique Krag.
It was the only Norwegian design adopted by the U.S. military and only ended up in service for about 14 years. The Springfield Model 1892-99 was praised for its smooth design and reliability. The problem was that it wasn’t as good as the Mauser 1893 in combat. The Mauser could be loaded with stripper clips much faster and the dynamics of the 7mm Mauser was superior to the 30-40 Krag. One thing is for sure though, the Krag is as smooth as butter 😎

Despite its many advancements, the Krag was eventually replaced by the Springfield Model 1903. However, it remains an important part of American military history and a significant example of the evolution of weapons technology.

The Krag is unique in that it has a side-mounted magazine, which holds up to five rounds of ammunition. To load the magazine, the operator would first make sure that the rifle is unloaded and the magazine cut-off is in the "off" position. The operator would then open the magazine door by pushing open the door to the right. The operator would then insert the cartridges, with the pointed end of the bullet facing forward, into the magazine one by one. Once the magazine is full, the operator would close the magazine door and pull back the bolt to chamber a round.
Despite its many advancements, the Krag was eventually replaced by the Springfield Model 1903. However, it remains an important part of American military history and a significant example of the evolution of firearms technology.
