The deadly race to the South Pole
Two exploration teams raced to the South Pole. Only one made it out alive.
Correction: A previous version of this video used an outdated British flag. The error has been corrected. We also occasionally referred to the British team as English. In fact, some members of Scott's team were Scottish and Welsh.

In New York City, a couple months ago, I had the honor of sharing a public conversation with one of my Buddhist heroes, the renowned author and scholar Robert Thurman. In this episode's conversation, we share an edited recording from that evening, talking about everything from overcoming self-hatred, enjoying pleasure without attachment, getting ghosted by the Dalai Lama, and how one might come to have compassion for someone as dangerous and deadly as Vladimir Putin.

Terra Nova: The White Silence | Captain Scott’s Journey to the South Pole, Antarctica
A thorough telling of the events of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). This was an Antarctic venture led by famed explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, whose main objective, aside from the many scientific research goals, was to reach the geographic South Pole and claim it for the United Kingdom.
It is a well-known tale of struggle and survival, but too many people focus solely on Scott's part in the expedition, and exclude the adventures of the many other men who accompanied him in Antarctica. This documentary aims to address Scott and his companions thoroughly, who were a band of interesting and colorful characters. Many were brave and honorable, and a few were arguably negligent.
Join me in this sprawling documentary epic produced over a period of two years. You will be enthralled,...

Robert Falcon Scott was a British explorer who dreamed of being the first person to reach the South Pole. In 1912, he reached the Pole only to learn that his Norwegian rival, Roald Amundsen, had beat him to it. Caught by freakish weather and a string of bad luck, his entire party died trying to get back. Reasons for his failure range from his use of ponies rather than dogs to a highly unusual temperature drop that made the journey back impossible to survive.

In 1909, the South Pole remained the last major geographic trophy to be won. Captain Robert Scott, who led the British expedition, was not going to rush: he developed a three-year program that involved extensive scientific research and systematic preparations for the trip to the Pole. He had no idea how much the Norwegians would interfere with his plans.
In this episode of ‘How It Was,’ we'll tell you about one of the most dramatic confrontations in the history of geographical discoveries - the rivalry between the British and Norwegians for the title of the first conquerors of the South Pole. Who coped better with the task: strong and hardy Norwegians, dressed in animal furs, or British scientists, equipped with the latest science supplies? What mistakes can cost lives in Antarctica, and how can a literary gift turn defeat into victory? These are the topics explored in our new video.

The first expedition to reach the geographic South Pole was led by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. He and four others arrived at the pole on 14 December 1911,[n 1] five weeks ahead of a British party led by Robert Falcon Scott as part of the Terra Nova Expedition. Amundsen and his team returned safely to their base, and later learned that Scott and his four companions had died on their return journey.
Amundsen's initial plans had focused on the Arctic and the conquest of the North Pole by means of an extended drift in an icebound ship. He obtained the use of Fridtjof Nansen's polar exploration ship Fram, and undertook extensive fundraising. Preparations for this expedition were disrupted when, in 1909, the rival American explorers Frederick Cook and Robert E. Peary each claimed to have reached the North Pole. Amundsen then changed his plan and began to prepare for a conquest of the South Pole; uncertain of the extent to which the public and his backers would support him, he kept this revised objective secret. When he set out in June 1910, he led even his crew to believe they were embarking on an Arctic drift, and revealed their true Antarctic destination only when Fram was leaving their last port of call, Madeira.
Amundsen made his Antarctic base, which he named "Framheim", in the Bay of Whales on the Great Ice Barrier. After months of preparation, depot-laying and a false start that ended in near-disaster, he and his party set out for the pole in October 1911. In the course of their journey they discovered the Axel Heiberg Glacier, which provided their route to the polar plateau and ultimately to the South Pole. The party's mastery of the use of skis and their expertise with sledge dogs ensured rapid and relatively trouble-free travel. Other achievements of the expedition included the first exploration of King Edward VII Land and an extensive oceanographic cruise.
The expedition's success was widely applauded, though the story of Scott's heroic failure overshadowed its achievement in the United Kingdom. Amundsen's decision to keep his true plans secret until the last moment was criticised by some. Recent polar historians have more fully recognised the skill and courage of Amundsen's party; the permanent scientific base at the pole bears his name, together with that of Scott.

Bobby Scott "A Taste Of Honey" (1970)
Along with "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother , this is Bobby's other iconic composition written along with Ric Marlow. Recorded by over 90 artists , the Herb Alpert version is the most well known. Lenny Welch had the 1st hit with this tune , but I believe Billy Dee Williams did it first. Allan Sherman did a hilarious spoof on this tune called "A Waste Of Money". From Bobby's "Robert William Scott" LP.

Bobby Scott "Nature Boy" (1990)
In 1941, a 33 year old George McGrew arrived in Los Angeles and began playing piano in the Eutropheon, a small health food store and raw food restaurant on Laurel Canyon Boulevard. The cafe was owned by John and Vera Richter, German immigrants who followed a Naturmensch and Lebensreform philosophy influenced by the Wandervogel movement in Germany.Their followers, known as "Nature Boys", wore long hair and beards and ate only raw fruits and vegetables. McGrew adopted the philosophy and chose the name "eden ahbez", writing and spelling his name with lower-case letters. It was there while living in a cave near Palm Springs, ahbez wrote "Nature Boy". Partly autobiographical, the song was a tribute to his mentor Bill Pester, who had originally introduced him to Naturmensch and Lebensreform.

In 1947, at the prompting of Cowboy Jack Patton and Johnny Mercer, ahbez approached Nat King Cole's manager backstage at the Lincoln Theater in Los Angeles, handed him a tattered copy of "Nature Boy", and asked him to show it to Cole. However his pleas were ignored and a disappointed ahbez left the sheet music of "Nature Boy" with Cole's valet, Otis Pollard. From him Cole came to know of the song and after reading it, the singer loved it and began playing "Nature Boy" for live audiences to much acclaim. Irving Berlin, who was present in the crowd, had initially offered to buy the track from Cole. But he decided to record the track for himself and needed to get permission from ahbez before releasing it as a single.
