Re-establishing the Honor of South Vietnam: Reanalyzing the Tet, Easter, and Spring Offensives
South Vietnam, its people, and its soldiers in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), have largely been derided as "corrupt" and "incompetent" "cowards" who ran away from the fight the moment the Communists attacked. Mostly, the Western public typically does not even recognize their significance on the battlefield. This is because the media pushed the "traditional" narrative of the war: the view of an American vs. unified Vietnamese war.
Now, military historians are starting to come back and re-analyze the battles of 1972 and 1975. What they find is a completely different story than has been told up until now. During the Easter Offensive of 1972, the ARVN managed to hold off 10 People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) divisions, as long as they had American air and logistical support. The ARV...

Let Them Fight - America Leaves the Last Battle of the Vietnam War - Xuân Lộc
In early 1975, the People's Army of Vietnam swept through several South Vietnamese territories on their way to Saigon. The government pleaded with the Americans for help to no avail, and the town of Xuân Lộc became the last stronghold of South Vietnamese resistance.
The Army of the Republic of Vietnam sent almost all of their remaining forces to defend the strategic crossroad, and President Nguyễn Văn Thiệu ordered the 18th Infantry Division to hold the town at all costs.
The South Vietnamese front then faced the Communist 4th Army Corps in a relentless 13-day battle that would decide the fate of the war.

The ARVN held its ground without American ground forces. The ARVN additionally went up against MBTs and mechanized infantry, something American soldiers never went against in Vietnam.
In 1975, the logistics of the ARVN completely ran out, forcing many soldiers to abandon their posts to try to feed their families. The ARVN also relied on the combined-arms warfare style of the United States which emphasizes air power. Due to the United States backing out, the ARVN was severely crippled. However, the PAVN still received artillery from the USSR and CCP. The ARVN still continued to fight numerous battles: Thuong Duc, Phuoc Long, Xuan Loc, and Tan Son Nhut to survive. These battles involved division-sized units (10,000 men), which show that South Vietnam was still willing to fight. She just simply ran out of food and ammo.

It is estimated to have suffered 1,394,000 casualties during the Vietnam War.The ARVN begun as a post-colonial army trained and closely affiliated with the United States and had engaged in conflict since its inception. Several dramatic changes occurred throughout its lifetime, initially from a 'blocking-force' to a more modern conventional force using helicopter deployment in combat. During the U.S. intervention, the role of the ARVN was marginalised to a defensive role with an incomplete modernisation, and transformed again most notably following Vietnamization as it was up-geared, expanded and reconstructed to fulfil the role of the departing U.S. forces. By 1974, it had become much more effective with foremost counterinsurgency expert and Nixon adviser Robert Thompson noting that Regular Forces were very well-trained and second only to U.S. and IDF forces in the free world and with General Creighton Abrams remarking that 70% of units were on par with the U.S. Army. However, the withdrawal of American forces through Vietnamization meant the armed forces could not effectively fulfil all the aims of the program and had become completely dependent on U.S. equipment, given it was meant to fulfill the departing role of the United States. At its peak, an estimated 1 in 9 citizens of South Vietnam were enlisted and it had become the fourth-largest army in the world composed of Regular Forces and more voluntary Regional Militias and Village-level militias.Unique in serving a dual military-civilian administrative purpose in direct competition with the Viet Cong political and armed wing, the PLAF. The ARVN had in addition became a component of political power and notably suffered from continual issues of political loyalty appointments, corruption in leadership, factional in-fighting and occasional open conflict between itself. After the fall of Saigon to the North Vietnamese army , the ARVN was dissolved. While some high-ranking officers had fled the country to the United States or elsewhere, thousands of former ARVN officers were sent to reeducation camps by the communist government of the new, unified Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Russia's war disrupting Vietnam's plans to modernise its armed forces
Russia's invasion of Ukraine is disrupting Vietnam's plans to modernise its armed forces. The country is the largest importer of Russian arms in Southeast Asia. Sanctions imposed by the West on Russia following has also made it difficult for Vietnam to upgrade its ageing fighter jets based on Russian technology, many of which are near the end of their lifecycle. The war is now making it crucial for Vietnam to develop its domestic defence industry and accelerate its diversification of arms imports. Read more: https://cna.asia/3y8iLbf

Why didn't the USA invade North Vietnam? (Short Animated Documentary)
During the Vietnam War, with the exception of air strikes, the US kept its military operations to the South. Given that attacking the north would have placed the momentum with the US and allowed it to remove important North Vietnamese infrastructure, it seems weird that the Americans didn't. So why not? To find out watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

The US Government Hid This About The Vietnam War (Warning* Mature Audiences Only)
From 1965 to 1973, the United States waged a grueling war against the Communist forces of North Vietnam. The conflict was a brutal guerrilla war where young American soldiers were sent far from home to fight an enemy that fought unlike anything the US military had seen before.

What all can agree upon is that the war resulted in the deaths of millions of people, a large portion of them civilians killed by the United States.
By 1968, the Vietnam War was going badly for the Americans. The Tet Offensive launched by the North in January 1968 ha...

During the Vietnam War, with the exception of air strikes, the US kept its military operations to the South. Given that attacking the north would have placed the momentum with the US and allowed it to remove important North Vietnamese infrastructure, it seems weird that the Americans didn't. So why not? From 1965 to 1973, the United States waged a grueling war against the Communist forces of North Vietnam. The conflict was a brutal guerrilla war where young American soldiers were sent far from home to fight an enemy that fought unlike anything the US military had seen before.
The Vietnam War remains controversial to this day. Some argue it was a justified defense of South Vietnam against Northern Communist aggression, while others argue it was an unjustified war of US imperialism driven by Cold War anti-communist hysteria. What all can agree upon is that the war resulted in the deaths of millions of people, a large portion of them civilians killed by the United States.
By 1968, the Vietnam War was going badly for the Americans. The Tet Offensive launched by the North in January 1968 had strained America’s military might and shattered US morale at home and abroad. Desperate to reclaim the initiative, the US launched a series of counter-offensives to push back the Communist enemy.
One target of this counter-offensive was Quang Ngai province, specifically the village of Son My. Son My was made up of several smaller hamlets including My Lai. For the sake of simplicity, we’ll stick to the more famous name for the whole village. My Lai, nicknamed Pinkville by the Americans because of its Communist sympathies, was believed to be a hotspot for Viet Cong (VC). US Intelligence claimed that the VC was active in the area and the village was essentially a Communist outpost.
In March 1968, Task Force Barker was assembled to deal with My Lai. The Task Force was made up of soldiers drawn from two companies: Company C, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment and Company B, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 11th Brigade, 23rd Infantry Division. For simplicity’s sake, we will call them B Company and C Company. There was also an A Company but their role in events was relatively minimal.
