The BIGGEST gasfield on the planet - North Field
The largest gasfield on the planet tells the story of the enormous North Field which straddles Qatar and Iran. This story compliments our recent video “Ghawar – the largest oilfield on the planet” which is also available on our YouTube channel.

Iran is going to set a new high record in the production of natural gas within the next few weeks, Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh بيژن نامدار زنگنه announced.
In comments on Monday, the Iranian oil minister said the country’s daily gas output is going to surpass one billion cubic meters before the beginning of the new Persian year (1399), March 20.
Zanganeh said the new record high will be reached as soon as all of the platforms in the 27 phases of South Pars gas field are installed.
Earlier on Monday, Iranian technicians installed the third platform of Phase 13 of the South Pars gas field after the megastructure was manufactured by a domestic company in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas بندرعباس.

Iran asks for help in recovering sunken gas rig
Iran has asked foreign companies to help retrieve a $40 million gas platform from the seabed of the South Pars natural gas field in the Persian Gulf.
The platform's metal support jacket dropped 80 meters below the ocean surface after a crane broke during installation last week.
The structure, one of four intended for South Pars, weighs over 1,000 metric tons. It is owned by state-run service company Sadra and a National Iranian Oil Company subsidiary.
According to Reuters, the South Pars project to develop Iran's portion of the world's largest gas field has been affected by the withdrawal of international energy firms, which were under pressure from U.S. and European governments, as well as difficulties in obtaining technology because of trade sanctions.
Full-scale recovery is being hamp...

When compared to the other gasfields listed in the top 20 gasfields, North Field is nearly as big as them all combined. Hundreds of billions of dollars have been invested in wells, platforms, pipelines and terminals. Much of the gas is converted to LNG and shipped around the globe. The scale is staggering.

The South Pars Field was discovered in 1990 by National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC). The Pars Oil and Gas Company. a subsidiary of NIOC, has jurisdiction over all South Pars-related projects. Field development has been delayed by various problems - technical (i.e., high levels of mercaptans and foul-smelling sulfur compounds), contractual issues and, recently, politics.
Gas production started from the field by commissioning phase 2 in December 2002 to produce 1 billion cubic feet per day (28 million cubic meters per day) of wet gas. Gas is sent to shore via pipeline, and processed at Assaluyeh عسلويه.
Condensate production from South Pars is currently 200,000 barrels per day (32,000 m3/d), and by 2010, could increase to over 500,000 barrels per day (79,000 m3/d). As of December 2010, South pars gas field's production capacity stands at 75 million cubic meters (2.6 billion cubic feet) of natural gas per day. Gas production at South Pars rose by nearly 30% between March 2009 and March 2010. The field's reserves are estimated at 14 trillion cubic meters (490 trillion cubic feet) of natural gas and 18 billion barrels (2.9 billion cubic meters) of natural gas condensates. Production at South Pars gas field will rise to 175 million cubic meters (6.2 billion cubic feet) per day in 2012.
NIOC is planning to develop the field in 24 to 30 phases, capable of producing about 25 billion cubic feet (710 million cubic meters) to 30 billion cubic feet (850 million cubic meters) of natural gas per day.
Each standard phase is defined for daily production of 1 billion cubic feet (28 million cubic meters) of natural gas, convert|40,000|oilbbl of condensate, 1500 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and 200 tonnes of sulfur, however some phases have some different production plans.

Earlier on Monday, Iranian technicians installed the third platform of Phase 13 of the South Pars gas field after the megastructure was manufactured by a domestic company in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas بندرعباس.
The new structure’s daily capacity of gas extraction is 14.2 million cubic meters. The fourth platform of Phase 13 is also going to be installed within the next few days.
In April 2017, the South Pars Phases 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 were inaugurated by Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani حسن روحاني.
The gas field, whose development has been divided into 28 phases, is located in the Persian Gulf straddling the maritime border between Iran and Qatar.
It covers an area of 9,700 square kilometers, of which 3,700 square kilometers belongs to Iran.
It is estimated that the Iranian section of the field contains 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of condensates in place.

The South Pars field is a natural-gas condensate field located in the Persian Gulf.
It is by far the world's largest natural gas field, with ownership of the field shared between Iran and Qatar.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the field holds an estimated 1,800 trillion cubic feet (51 trillion cubic metres) of in-situ natural gas and some 50 billion barrels (7.9 billion cubic metres) of natural gas condensates.
On the list of natural gas fields it has almost as much recoverable reserves as all the other fields combined. It has significant geostrategic influence.

Full-scale recovery is being hampered by unfavorable weather conditions in the Persian Gulf.
