In the legal view, this province has three major cities of importance: Baraka (Fizi Territory), Bukavu (Provincial Capital) and Uvira (Uvira Territory). The northern city of Minova grew exponentially from 1994 through 2012 with a steady influx of refugees as a result of the disruption of the Rwandan Genocide and the First and Second Congo wars, and continued fighting in the area.
Kivu is also the name for the entire region surrounding Lake Kivu, including the portions in Rwanda which contain the vast majority of the lake area's population (the contiguous towns of Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo and Gisenyi, Rwanda, with a combined population approaching 1,000,000, form the largest urbanised area in the Lake Kivu area). The area is characterized by lush vegetation and an extended growing season due in part to its high altitude (1500m or 4900ft at the lakeshore) and the volcanic nature of its soil. The Kivu region represents the high point of the East African Rift Valley.

The Congo: Militias and violence | DW Documentary
Militias rule northeastern Congo through fear and bloodshed. The central government has little to no authority here. Mama Faida saw her own family murdered - and joined a militia to seek revenge.
Many of the local people see the militias as their only chance at survival. If they don’t have the right stuff to be fighters or some other ray of hope, they have to endure the horrors of life under the competing gangs. For years, the Congolese government has been powerless to stop the marauders. Not even the 20,000-strong UN peacekeeping force has proven able to protect the civilian population consistently, not matter what their strategy. DW reporter Mariel Müller rode along with the UN peacekeepers into a region off limits to most journalists.

The unrest ravaging eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has forced many thousands of people to flee their homes. Many have found refuge on the other side of the border between North and South Kivu, where they share limited resources and land with equally vulnerable populations.
Pygmy communities were forced out of the Kahuzi Biega forest, where they had been living for generations until the park became a Unesco world heritage site, and are now the object of discrimination.

Kivu: Inside one of the World’s Most Dangerous Regions
In this region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, children are forced into militias and rape is used as a weapon of war ... Brut reporter Charles Villa went to North Kivu, one of the world’s most dangerous regions.
In the documentary, Villa asked a militia warlord about his enlisting child soldiers in a tense interview. He met with Nobel Peace Prize winner Denis Mukwege to discuss his work with victims of rape as a weapon of war, and later visited a coltan mine, where young men, sometimes children, work in conditions described as human rights violations by Amnesty International.

Congo: Jungle Fever | Deadliest Journeys
00:00 In South Kivu in Congo, the city of Shabunda is one of the most isolated in the country. Its access is so difficult that life is more expensive there than in any European city. Thus, the poorest families come to look for food there by bicycle or motorbike. These convicts of the road sometimes transport up to 250 kilos of goods for several days, without worrying about the dangers. Without ever giving up, these travelers are almost all considered heroes because "he who does not travel does not know the value of men", according to the Congolese.

If you were going for a refreshing swim, the last thing you’d expect is to suffocate from toxic gases. But when it comes to Lake Kivu, this is one dangerous body of water you wouldn’t want to dive into. What makes this lake so hazardous? What would be the physical consequences of swimming in it? And how could the lake be on the verge of a toxic explosion?

Paradise Malahide Hotel (also spelled Paradis Malahide) is an amazing hotel on the shores of Lake Kivu, near Gisenyi Rwanda. The hotel occupies a small peninsula that's surrounded by the lake water, making it incredibly serene, peaceful and beautiful.
One my latest trip to Rwanda, my wife, son, and my Dad and I, all stayed at Paradis Malahide Hotel for a few nights to relax and enjoy Lake Kivu.
We had a bungalow style room, which cost about $90 US per night for a double, self contained.
The highlight for me was the actual grounds of the hotel, being about to get incredible views of Lake Kivu while relaxing on an outdoor sofa. The service at Paradis Malahide and the food - particularly breakfast - was also incredible.
If you visit Gisenyi, Rwanda, and have a few days to relax at Lake Kivu, I would highly recommend Paradise Malahide.

To respond to the needs of the most isolated communities, MSF identified and trained one member in each village as a volunteer health worker

Fighting between government forces and M23 rebels has intensified in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Battles are taking place around the town of Sake, near the Rwanda border. Most of those injured have been transferred to the nearby provincial capital, Goma. Health workers there say they are overwhelmed.
Al Jazeera's Catherine Soi reports.
