The first South Dakota class was a class of six battleships, laid down in 1920 but never completed. They would have been the last dreadnoughts in the Naval Act of 1916 to be commissioned had the Washington Naval Treaty not caused their cancellation one-third of the way through their construction. They would have been the largest, most heavily armed and armored battleships in the U.S. Navy and, designed to achieve 23 knots (43km/h), represented an attempt to abandon its 21-knot (39km/h) standardized fleet speed and catch up with the increasing fleet speeds of its main rivals, the British Royal Navy and Imperial Japanese Navy. In this, size and secondary armament, they represented a break from the Standard-type battleship that had dominated American capital ship design for the prior five ship classes, while their use of standardized bridges, lattice masts and other features was a continuation of this practice and the increase in the number of main guns from the preceding Coloradoclass had long been standard U.S. naval policy. The main restriction to which they had to adhere was the ability to pass through the Panama Canal.
The class comprised four ships: South Dakota, Indiana, Massachusetts, and Alabama. They were more compact and better protected than the preceding North Carolinaclass, but had the same main battery, nine 16"/45 caliber Mark 6 guns in three-gun turrets. The ships can be visually distinguished from the earlier vessels by their single funnel, compared to twin funnels in the North Carolinas. According to authors William Garzke and Robert Dulin, the South Dakota design was the best "treaty battleship" ever built.
Construction began shortly before World War II, with Fiscal Year (FY) 1939 appropriations. Commissioning through the summer of 1942, the four ships served in both the Atlantic, ready to intercept possible German capital ship sorties, and the Pacific, in carrier groups and shore bombardments. All four ships were retired post-war; South Dakota and Indiana were scrapped, Massachusetts and Alabama retained as museum ships.

The first South Dakota class was a group of six battleships that were laid down in 1920 for the U.S. Navy, but were never completed. ; designed to achieve 23 knots (43 km/h; 26 mph), they represented an attempt to catch up with the increasing fleet speeds of its main rivals, the British Royal Navy and Imperial Japanese Navy.
The South Dakotas were authorized in 1917, but work was postponed so that the U.S. Navy could incorporate information gained from the Battle of Jutland, fought in mid-1916, in their design. Work was further postponed to give destroyers and other small fighting vessels priority as they were needed urgently to fight German U-boats in the North Atlantic. Construction started only in 1920. As the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922 both restricted the total battleship tonnage allowed the U.S. Navy, and limited individual ship size to 35,000 long tons (36,000 t), construction was halted in early 1922. The unfinished hulls were scrapped the following year, the guns were transferred to the U.S. Army and their boilers and armor were used to modernize older battleships.

Fictional History:
Ordered in 1921 to counter the American South Dakota class, British G3s/N3s, and Tosa class of Japan.
After some negotiations, The JR was able to get The other Nations to agree to allow one class of ‘Super Battleships’ to be finished from each nation. Due to the JR threatening to leave the treaty causing another arms race.
This would lead to the US finishing 4 South Dakotas.
The British finishing 2 G3s and 2 N3s.
Japan finishing 2 Tosa’s and 1 Amagi.
And the JR finishing 3 Bergens;
Bergen was launched on March 6th1923 and commissioned on September 9th 1925.
Svalbard was launched on June 15th 1923 and was commissioned January 3rd 1926
Jenson was delayed due to a redesign, launched on July 27th 1925 and commissioned October 15th 1928.
They were used for mostly publicity in 1930s with Bergen and Svalbard going to America, Italy, Britain, Spain, Germany, and France. letting civilians tour their upper decks.
In 1934 Both Bergen and Svalbard were sent in for Reconstruction.
In 1935 Jenson and the Recently refitted Borealis would steam to the The Southern Pacific in a show of force after Japans invasion of China.
In 1936 Bergen and Svalbard were both finished and back in service and Jenson would then go in for its Refit.
1939 Jenson would re-enter service, and More AA would be Added to the Bergen and Svalbard. Svalbard would be assigned to be in the same task force as the JRN Sparrow (CV-2).
Bergen and Jenson would survive the War but Svalbard would be sunk in 1943 when She along with Stavanger engaged Yamato, Hiroshima and Tosa to allow the Sparrow to escape, Svalbard sank the Tosa and Moderately Damage Yamato but would be sunk when 3 shells from Yamato penetrated the Magazines.

Thanks for watching, remember to like & subscribe!
USS Massachusetts (BB-59) is the third of four South Dakota-class fast battleships built for the United States Navy in the late 1930s. The first American battleships designed after the Washington treaty system began to break down in the mid-1930s, they took advantage of an escalator clause that allowed increasing the main battery to 16-inch (406 mm) guns, but refusal to authorize larger battleships kept their displacement close to the Washington limit of 35,000 long tons (36,000 t). A requirement to be armored against the same caliber of guns as they carried, combined with the displacement restriction, resulted in cramped ships, a problem that was exacerbated by wartime modifications that considerably strengthened their anti-aircraft batteries and significantly increased their crews.

Using the upcoming game Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts recreate the design of the super-dreadnought South Dakota. Armed with twelve 16" main guns these ships would have been formidable opponents. Let's design it in the game and then pit them against two AI designed battleships in a 2v2 battle.

This is the Fictional battleship Svalbard of the Bergen class Super Battleships.
This ship is heavily inspired by the ‘South Dakota 1920s’ Design from the US, And is sort of practice before try building any Standard battleships.
Enjoy!
Music: For The Kingdom - Lisle Moore.
And the JR finishing 3 Bergens;
(More details in the follow up for the late war refits of the class)
