The Seven Sorrows of Mary
The Seven Sorrows of Mary
The First Sorrow: The Prophesy of Simeon.
Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
Luke 2:34-35
Let us consider the affliction which Mary’s immaculate heart endured at the prophesy of holy Simeon. May we more perfectly follow Christ, and thereby comfort Mary’s heart.
Hail Mary…
The Second Sorrow: The Flight Into Egypt
Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to...

Summary of the Novena video:
The First Sorrow of Mary is the Prophecy of Simeon. When Mary and Joseph present Jesus at the temple according to the Jewish custom, they encounter Simeon, a man whom God promised would not die without first laying his eyes on the Savior. Simeon was elated when Jesus arrived and heaped praise on God for this great gift. Mary must have had a heart full of joy in that moment until Simeon’s words took a sudden turn:
And his father and mother marveled at what was said about him. And...

Summary of the Novena video for Our Lady of Dolours:
Herod having heard that the expected Messiah was born, foolishly feared that the new-born King would deprive him of his kingdom. The impious Herod, therefore, waited to learn from the holy magi where the King was born, that he might take from him his life; but finding himself deceived by the magi, he ordered all the infants that could be found in the neighborhood of Bethlehem to be put to death.

Now after they had left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.” Then Joseph got up, took the child and his mother by night, and went to Egypt,
Matthew 2:13-14
Let us consider the anguish which Mary endured having to flee with her dutiful spouse Joseph, and the Child Jesus to Egypt. May we be attentive to the needs of the poor and the oppressed, and thereby comfort Mary’s heart.
Hail Mary…
The Third Sorrow: The Loss of the Child Jesus
When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it. Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day’s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him.
Luke 2:43-45
Let us consider the anxiety which Mary endured at the loss of her dear child. May we always look for Jesus and following his example submit ourselves to the Father’s will, and thereby comfort Mary’s heart.
Hail Mary…
The Fourth Sorrow:
The Meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross
A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him.
Luke 23:27
Let us consider the grief which Mary endured at the sight of her son so beaten and wounded on the way of the cross. So protective was she of her child Jesus, her heart broke that she could no longer protect him. May we, with humble and contrite hearts, pick up our crosses and follow Christ, and thereby comfort Mary’s heart.
Hail Mary…
The Fifth Sorrow: The Crucifixion
There they crucified him… [and] standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
John 19:18;25-26
Let us consider the bitter agony which Mary endured standing at the foot of the cross gazing at her crucified son, who knowing that he would soon be dead gave us his sorrowful Mother. May we leave the ways of sin and persevere in the faith, and thereby comfort Mary’s heart.
Hail Mary…
The Sixth Sorrow:
The Taking Down of the Body of Jesus from the Cross
Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate wondered if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead for some time. When he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the body to Joseph. Then Joseph bought a linen cloth, and taking down the body, wrapped it in the linen cloth…
Mark 15:43-46
Let us consider the miserable desolation which Mary endured as she held the bloody and lifeless body of Christ. No one could comfort her, for Christ was her comfort. The light of the world, the spotless lamb, her innocent child, sacrificed for our sins, and laid upon the altar of her hands. May we, with open arms accept the ocean of Mercy which Christ opened up for us, and thereby comfort Mary’s heart.
Hail Mary…
The Seventh Sorrow: The Burial of Jesus
Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified, and in the garden there was a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. And so, because it was the Jewish day of Preparation, and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
John 19:41-42
Let us consider the sorrowful solitude of Mary, as she buried her only son. May we be always willing to keep her company as good and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ, loving God and each other, and thereby comfort Mary’s heart.
Hail Mary…

"ROSARY OF THE SEVEN SORROWS OF MARY"
Introduction prayer: My God, I offer You this Rosary for Your glory, so I can honor your Holy Mother, the Blessed Virgin, so I can share and meditate upon her suffering. I humbly beg you to give me true repentance for all my sins. Give me wisdom and humility, so that I may receive all the indulgences contained in this prayer.
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend You, my God, You Who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life.
(Pray 3 Hail Mary’s)
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
1) THE FIRST SWORD OF SORROW: THE PROPHECY OF SIMEON (LUKE 2:22-35)
"And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord"). There, the old priest Simeon held the baby Jesus in his hands, and the Holy Spirit filled his heart. Simeon recognized Jesus as the promised Savior and held the Child high toward heaven, thanking God for granting his wish that he would live long enough to behold the Messiah.
"Now Your servant may depart this life in peace, my Lord," he said… Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this Child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.”
The Blessed Virgin knew that she had given birth to the Savior of humankind, so she immediately understood and accepted Simeon’s prophecy. Although her Heart was deeply touched by this favor of bearing the Baby Jesus, her Heart remained heavy and troubled, for she knew what had been written about the ordeals and subsequent death of the Savior. Whenever she saw her Son, she was constantly reminded of the suffering He would be subject to, and His suffering became her own.
Prayer: Beloved Mother Mary, whose Heart suffered beyond bearing because of us, teach us to suffer with you and with love, and to accept all the suffering God deems it necessary to send our way. Let us suffer, and may our suffering be known to God only, like yours and that of Jesus. Do not let us show our suffering to the world, so it will matter more and be used to atone for the sins of the world. You, Mother, who suffered with the Savior of the world, we offer you our suffering, and the suffering of the world, because we are your children. Join those sorrows to your own and to those of the Lord Jesus Christ, then offer them to God the Father. You are a Mother greater than all.
(Pray 1 Our Father and 7 Hail Mary’s)
Most Merciful Mother, remind us always about the Sorrows of your Son, Jesus.
2. THE SECOND SWORD OF SORROW: THE FLIGHT INTO EGYPT (MATTHEW 2:13-15)
Mary’s Heart broke and her mind was greatly troubled when Joseph revealed to her the words of the angel: they were to wake up quickly and flee to Egypt because Herod wanted to kill Jesus. The Blessed Virgin hardly had time to decide what to take or leave behind; she took her Child and left everything else, rushing outside before Joseph so that they could hurry as God wished. Then she said, "Even though God has power over everything, He wants us to flee with Jesus, His Son. God will show us the way, and we shall arrive without being caught by the enemy."

Summary of the Novena video:
The First Sorrow of Mary is the Prophecy of Simeon. When Mary and Joseph present Jesus at the temple according to the Jewish custom, they encounter Simeon, a man whom God promised would not die without first laying his eyes on the Savior. Simeon was elated when Jesus arrived and heaped praise on God for this great gift. Mary must have had a heart full of joy in that moment until Simeon’s words took a sudden turn:
And his father and mother marveled at what was said about him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through you own soul also), so that the thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” (Luke 2:33-36)
The Novena to Our Lady of Sorrows commemorates the 7 sorrows of Mary. The first Sorrow of Mary, is known as the Prophecy of Simeon. When Mary and Joseph followed the Jewish custom and brought Jesus to the temple, they encountered Simeon, a man who had received God's promise that he would not pass away before beholding the Savior. Simeon's heart brimmed with joy as he witnessed the arrival of Jesus, and he lavished praise upon God for this remarkable blessing. But Mary’s heart is filled with sorrow.
In the first of the 7 Sorrows of Mary (also known as Our Lady of Dolours), our key scripture comes from Luke 2:33-36
And his father and mother marveled at what was said about him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed (and a sword will pierce through you own soul also), so that the thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
Regarding this first Sorrow of Mary, the holy Virgin herself said to St. Matilda, that at the announcement of St. Simeon all her joy was changed into sorrow. For, as it was revealed to St. Theresa, the blessed mother, although she knew before this that the life of her Son would be sacrificed for the salvation of the world, yet she then learned more particularly and distinctly the sufferings and cruel death that awaited her poor Son. She knew that he would be contradicted in all things.

Our key Scripture for this second day of the Novena to Our Lady of Sorrows:
“Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.” (Matthew 2:13)
What was the road to Egypt like?
“St. Bonaventure describes it, was rough, unknown, through woods, and little frequented. The season was winter, and therefore they had to travel in snow, rain, wind, and storms, and through bad and difficult roads. Mary was then fifteen years of age, a delicate virgin, unaccustomed to such journeys.”
“St. Antoninus, St. Thomas, and others assert, They were foreigners, unknown, without revenues, without money, without kindred; hardly were they able to support themselves by their humble labors. As they were destitute, says St. Basil, it is manifest what effort they must have made to obtain there the necessaries of life. “
The blessed Veronica da Binasco, an Augustinian nun, was carried in spirit to accompany Mary and the infant Jesus in this journey to Egypt, and at the end of it the divine mother said to her: “Child, hast thou seen through what difficulties we have reached this place? Now learn that no one receives graces without suffering.” He who wishes to feel least the sufferings of this life, must take Jesus and Mary with him. For him who lovingly bears in his heart this Son and this mother, all sufferings become light, and even sweet and dear.
