As seen from the Earth, a solar eclipse is a type of eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks ("occults") the Sun. This can happen only at new moon, when the Sun and the Moon are in conjunction as seen from Earth in an alignment referred to as syzygy. In a total eclipse, the disk of the Sun is fully obscured by the Moon. In partial and annular eclipses, only part of the Sun is obscured.
If the Moon were in a perfectly circular orbit, a little closer to the Earth, and in the same orbital plane, there would be total solar eclipses every month. However, the Moon's orbit is inclined (tilted) at more than 5 degrees to the Earth's orbit around the Sun (see ecliptic), so its shadow at new moon usually misses Earth. Earth's orbit is called the ecliptic plane as the Moon's orbit must cross this plane in order for an eclipse (both solar as well as lunar) to occur. In addition, the Moon's actual orbit is elliptical, often taking it far enough away from Earth that its apparent size is not large enough to block the Sun totally. The orbital planes cross each other at a line of nodes resulting in at least two, and up to five, solar eclipses occurring each year; no more than two of which can be total eclipses. However, total solar eclipses are rare at any particular location because totality exists only along a narrow path on the Earth's surface traced by the Moon's shadow or umbra.
The solar eclipse mentioned in a text dating to the reign of Mursili II could be of great importance for the absolute chronology of the Hittite Empire within the chronology of the Ancient Near East.
The text records an "omen of the sun," linked to the tenth year of Mursili's reign, which appeared just as he was about to launch a campaign against the Kingdom of Azzi-Hayasa in north-eastern Anatolia. According to the current debate, there are two possible candidates for the eclipse: 13 April 1308 BC or 24 June 1312 BC. The 1312 BC date is accepted by most Hittitologists, e.g. Trevor Bryce (1998), while Paul Åström (1993) has suggested the 1308 BC date.
The 1312 eclipse occurred over northern Anatolia in the early afternoon, and its effects would have been quite spectacular for Mursili and his men on campaign:
In contrast, the 1308 eclipse was annular, and began very early in the morning over Arabia (and only penumbral over Anatolia and Syria), reaching its height over Central Asia:
A total solar eclipse occurred on July 22, 2009. It was the longest total solar eclipse during the 21st century, not to be surpassed until 13 June 2132. It lasted a maximum of 6 minutes and 39 seconds off the coast of Southeast Asia, causing tourist interest in eastern China, Japan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
Visibility
A partial eclipse was seen within the broad path of the Moon's penumbra, including most of Southeast Asia (all of India and China) and north-eastern Oceania.

This eclipse is now more commonly identified as the one of June 24, 1312 BC but I dated it to August 2, 979 BC instead.

Trojan war - Clytemnestra was Muwatti, Pollux was Telipinu, Castor was Piyassili, Leda was Malnigal
The Trojan War was a legendary conflict in Greek mythology between the Achaean Greeks against the city of Troy. The war is one of the most important events in Greek mythology, and it has been narrated through many works of Greek literature, most notably Homer's Iliad. The core of the Iliad (Books II – XXIII) describes a period of four days and two nights in the tenth year of the decade-long siege of Troy.
The key to unlocking the historic Trojan war in my opinion, is to first identify who exactly the Trojans, the Amazons, and the Achaeans were in history because these were the major players in the Iliad. In my previous video titled “Historical Troy was in Eupatoria near the Amazon city of Themyscira on the Black Sea southern coast”, I talked about the alliance between the Trojans and the...

Penthesilea was an Amazon queen in Greek mythology, she assisted Troy in the Trojan War during which she was killed by Achilles. Because the Amazons were the allies of the Trojans during the war, I would like to believe that Amazon was located near Troy and that the Amazons thought that by defending Troy they would be defending their own homeland from the Greek invaders.
The key to unlocking the historic Trojan war in my opinion, is to first identify who exactly the Trojans, the Amazons, and the Achaeans were in history because these were the major players in the Iliad. In my previous video titled “Historical Troy was in Eupatoria near the Amazon city of Themyscira on the Black Sea southern coast”, I talked about the alliance between the Trojans and the Amazons during the war, and how close was Themyscira, the capital of the Amazons, to the city of Troy (which I identified as Eupatoria), just 65 kilometers away from each other.
In that video I concluded based on Homer’s descriptions that the city of Troy must be located near the conjunction of two rivers, namely, Scamander (which I identified as the Iris or Yesilirmak river) and the Simoeis river (which I identified as the Lycus or Kelkit river). And Eupatoria, just like Troy, was located just south of where the Lycus flows into the Iris river. Both Eupatoria and Themyscira were near the southern coast of the Black Sea in Turkey in a region also known as the Pontic region of Asia Minor in northern Anatolia, Turkey.
Coincidentally, there was one historical confederation in the Armenian Highlands and/or Pontic region of Asia Minor. And this was the Hayasa-Azzi confederation which was in conflict with the Hittite Empire in the 14th century BC as dated by historians. The exact nature of Hayasa's and Azzi's relationship is uncertain. They are generally thought to have been a confederation of two different kingdoms in what is now northeastern Turkey.
In this video, I will be discussing the Hayasa-Azzi confederation which I believe to be the Trojan and Amazon alliance during the Trojan war. The capital of Hayasa-Azzi is unknown, but its main fortress was Ura, possibly located somewhere along the Kelkit River where its confluence with the Yesilirmak river is where I believe Troy was located as I mentioned earlier.

Also, in my other video titled “Troy was Hayasa, Amazon was Azzi, Anniya was Achilles & Mursili's eclipse on Trojan war's 10th year”, I identified the Trojan-Amazon alliance as the Hayasa-Azzi confederation located in the Pontic region of Asia Minor where also Eupatoria and Themyscira were located. I specifically identified Hayasa as Troy, and Azzi as Amazon.
I ended that video by saying that Mursili II’s historical solar eclipse was visible at the mouth of the Yesilirmak river (where according to Homer the Trojan war battles were fought) on August 2, 979 BC at 2:31:30 UTC just 17 minutes after sunrise. That day also marked the death of Patroclus, a close friend of Achilles, during the 10th year of the Trojan war. I dated Mursili’s eclipse using Stellarium in my video titled “Redating Mursili II's solar eclipse to August 2, 979 BC means Hittite chronology is 334 years too early”. This eclipse occurred in the latter part of Mursili’s 10th year. Thus, Mursili’s 1st year when he ascended the Hittite throne, coincided with the first year of the Trojan war.
In my video titled “Historic Trojan war- Priam was Hakkani, Dymas was Tudhaliya, Otreus was Suppiluliuma, Asius was Zida”, I identified several historical personages and their associated character names in the Iliad which documented the Trojan war. Hakkani was a king of Hayasa who I believe to be the Trojan king Priam, while Tudhaliya and Suppiluliuma were Hittite Kings who I believe were the Phrygian kings Dymas and Otreus respectively. Zida was a Hittite prince who I believe was the Phrygian prince Asius. The Hittites called their kingdom Hattusa which in my research was also the Phrygia of Homer’s Iliad.
In this video, I will now identify Clytemnestra, Pollux, Castor, Leda, and their corresponding historical personages.

Details about Dido's character, life, and role in the founding of Carthage are best known from the account given in Virgil's epic poem, the Aeneid, written around 20 BC, which tells the legendary story of the Trojan hero Aeneas.

As per usual, this compilation features over a dozen alternate history stories spanning thousands of years, in places scattered across the globe. From the gates of Jerusalem during the third crusade, to the sweltering streets of Selma Alabama under occupation by a tyrannical League of Nations, to Ankenaten's Egypt, to a version of medieval Korea where magic works for some reason, and much, much more.

In my video titled "Trojan war - Clytemnestra was Muwatti, Pollux was Telipinu, Castor was Piyassili, Leda was Malnigal” I identified several more historical personages and their associated character names in the Iliad. Malnigal, who I identified with Leda, was the Babylonian wife of the Hittite king Suppiluliuma, who I identified with Tyndareus. Muwatti and Piyassili (who I identified with Clytemnestra and Castor respectively) were Suppiluliuma’s children with Malnigal. While Telipinu (who I identified with Pollux) was Suppiluliuma’s step-son with Malnigal. In this video I will now identify Salmoneus, Agamemnon, Menelaus, Chryses son of Chryseis, and Aegisthus.

The historicity of the Trojan War, including whether it occurred at all and where Troy was located if it ever existed, is still subject to debate. Most classical Greeks thought that the war was a historical event. I am one of those who believe the Trojan war was a historic event, and that not just the location, but even all its main characters were historical. I will make a series of videos about the historicity of the Trojan war, and in this video, I will identify the location of Troy using Homer’s description of it as my guide.

Mursili II was a king of the Hittite Empire circa 1321–1295 BC and the solar eclipse mentioned in a text dating to the reign of Mursili II could be of great importance for the absolute chronology of the Hittite Empire. This eclipse is now more commonly identified as the one of June 24, 1312 BC but I dated it to August 2, 979 BC instead.

While he can easily be overshadowed by the military accomplishments of his father Suppiluliuma and his son Muwatalli II, Mursili II is one of the most significant kings in Hittite History, and one of the most well documented. Unlike most kings, for whom we have pretty much just state records, we have personal details of Mursili's life and reign, telling us things like how he felt when he took the throne, and how much he loved his wife. Today we look at Mursili II's accomplishments and writings, all of which take place in the backdrop of one of the most significant plagues of the late bronze age.
Notes for the episode are on the webpage at oldeststories.net
The Oldest Stories podcast tells the history and myth of bronze age Mesopotamia beginning with the first written clay tablets circa 3000 BCE. Using their stories and histories, we can learn a great deal about the people of the ancient world and see how the people of the very first civilizations were not all that different from us nowadays, except of course for the places where they were very different. The past is a foreign country after all.
This youtube channel is an extension of the Oldest Stories podcast, and is also available on any good podcasting app, or at the website http://oldeststories.net. Details about Dido's character, life, and role in the founding of Carthage are best known from the account given in Virgil's epic poem, the Aeneid, written around 20 BC, which tells the legendary story of the Trojan hero Aeneas.

In this episode we discuss the second entry in the illustrious "Alternate Generals" series.
