A soft-point bullet (SP round or JSP for short), also known as a soft-nosed bullet, is a leadexpanding bullet with a copper or brass jacket that is left open at the tip, exposing some of the lead inside and is thus an example of a semi-jacketed round. Side by side comparison with a hollow-point bullet and FMJ ammunition will quickly illustrate the difference.
Specifications
After the introduction of cordite as a propellant it was noted that lead bullets fired at the higher velocities were readily stripped as they travelled along the barrel. This led to significantly faster fouling of the barrel as lead deposits built up particularly on rifled barrels. Bullets were jacketed to prevent fouling, although these inflicted less severe wounds. Partially jacketing the bullet allowed the bullet to foul the barrel less while also exposing the soft tip which is designed to expand upon impact and to spread open the harder metal jacket. The mechanism is the same as hollow-point bullets, but the lack of a hollow depression reduces the area upon which the hydraulic pressure can act on the lead, and thus the soft-point bullet expands more slowly than a hollow point.
Quick Tip: Hollow Point vs Soft Point vs Ballistic Tip Bullets
Brownells Gun Techs Steve Ostrem and Caleb Savant sort out the differences between three popular types of bullets: hollow points, soft points, and ballistic tips. All three are designed to expand on impact with the target, either for hunting or self-defense. A SOFT POINT is a jacketed bullet with an exposed lead tip that encourages expansion, and since they don't open up too drastically, they also penetrate well. They're mostly used on hunting ammunition, and the .30-30 Winchester is the classic example of a highly effective soft-point hunting round with good expansion and excellent penetration.
Used mostly in handguns for self-defense, HOLLOW POINTS are designed to transfer a whole LOT of energy into the target, but won't over-penetrate through walls, which could lead to property damage o...

7.62x39 Bullet Expansion: Soft Point vs. Hollow Point vs. FMJ - Brown Bear, Golden Bear, TulAmmo, AK
Pitting 7.62x39 Full Metal Jacket against Soft Point and Hollow Point rounds. The test media? PIZZA DOUGH. I satisfy my curiosity about the comparative results of these different projectile designs in a quick backyard experiment.
I fire these 7.62x39 rounds from a WASR 10 AK to test expansion and destructive force. The pizza dough was an interesting test media, more solid than water allowing a greater visual representation of the damage.
The ammo tested:
Brown Bear 7.62x39 Hollow Point (HP)
Golden Bear 7.62x39 Soft Point (SP)
TulAmmo 7.62x39 Full Metal Jacket (FMJ)

Some long-range match target rifle bullets also have small hollow points because they just tend to be more accurate over long ranges (there's some science involved!). Tipped bullets, polymer-tipped bullets, or BALLISTIC TIPS are fully streamlined bullets with excellent ballistic coefficients, so they travel farther but still expand on impact, making them excellent for long-range hunting. Tipped handgun bullets are used for self-defense. The tip doesn't clog with cloth from clothing and so will still properly expand in the target like a hollow point without over-penetration.

In this video we take a look at the terminal ballistic difference between full metal jacket and soft point ammunition. We tested the ammunition using a DelTon Echo 316 AR-15. We fired our rounds from 25 meters into an FBI grade synthetic gelatin that is used for ballistic testing. We purchased our gel from clearballistics.com.
A full metal jacket bullet features a lead core surrounded by a metal jacket. A soft point bullet is similar to a full metal jacket expect the lead is exposed at the tip of the round. The FMJ is designed to tumble inside of soft tissue. This creates a large wound cavity while maintaining the bullets shape and weight. SP rounds fragment upon impact. This creates multiple pieces of the projectile which transfers all of the rounds kinetic energy into the target. The fragmentation of the bullet is also meant to limit the risk of over penetration.
Our results were somewhat surprising. I expected to see a clear difference between the FMJ and SP's performance. Our test showed that our FMJ tumbled into the gelatin and only penetrated to the 15 inch mark. The permanent cavity was roughly 1.5 inches throughout the gelatin. The soft point fragmented as designed. Throughout the gelatin we found pieces of jacket and lead core. The SP was able to transfer more of its energy into the block. This was clearly shown in the permanent cavity left by the SP round. The largest channel was roughly 1.75 inches in diameter. Surprisingly the SP round over penetrated out the 16 inch block.
Over all the rounds performed as designed, but keep in mind this was only one test. I would like to conduct more tests to confirm our findings, however; the cost of these tests makes this impossible.

Pitting 7.62x39 Full Metal Jacket against Soft Point and Hollow Point rounds. The test media? PIZZA DOUGH. I satisfy my curiosity about the comparative results of these different projectile designs in a quick backyard experiment.
