1957 HITS ARCHIVE: So Rare - Jimmy Dorsey (a #2 record)
So Rare (Herst-Sharpe) by Jimmy Dorsey, orchestra conducted by Lee Castle with the Arthur Malvin Singers
In November 1956, Jimmy Dorsey, ill with cancer, was coaxed into the studio to play alto sax on this and three other tracks accompanied by the current Tommy Dorsey Orchestra musicians (conducted by Lee Castle). Tommy died just two weeks later and Jimmy passed on June 12, 1957, as “So Rare” was riding comfortably among the nation’s top-5 best-sellers.
To hear what “So Rare” had sounded like when it first came upon the scene in 1937, check out this Gus Arnheim version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raIPQ2FVSYM

Jimmy Dorsey and His Orchestra - So Rare (1957)
Charted at #2 on Billboard Hot 100 in February 1957 and #4 on the R&B chart. Jimmy's second to last Top 40 hit and his first chart single since "Rag Mop" hit #15 in 1950. The last Top 40 hit was "June Night" which charted at #21 in August 1957. Jimmy passed away in June of 1957. "So Rare" is widely considered as the last major Big Band hit and it was quite a surprise coming in the midst of the wave of rock and roll.
This song had charted at #1 in 1937 for Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians (which I've also posted). Original Billboard review: "A smart arrangement here of the appealing oldie with the Dorsey alto wailing most of the way through. Nice choral effects adorn the side making it a contender for disk jockey and jukebox action. With enough push, this could sell copies." Billboa...

Tangerine! (Men's & Women's Versions) (Jimmy Dorsey) (Bob Eberly) (Helen O'Connell) 4K
LYRICS:
Tangerine, she is all they claim
With her eyes of night and lips as bright as flame
Tangerine, when she dances by, senoritas stare and caballeros sigh
And I've seen toasts to Tangerine
Raised in every bar across the Argentine
Yes, she has them all on the run, but her heart belongs to just one
Her heart belongs to Tangerine!
Tangerine, she is all they say
With mascara'd eye and chapeaux by Dache.
Tangerine, with her lips of flame
If the color keeps, Louis Philippe's to blame.
And I've seen clothes on Tangerine
Where the label says "From Macy's Mezzanine".
Yes, she's got the guys in a whirl, but she's only fooling one girl
She's only fooling Tangerine!

With enough push, this could sell copies." Billboard rating: 85 out of 100.
Written by Jerry Herst and Jack Sharpe.
B-side is "Sophisticated Swing".

LYRICS:
Tangerine, she is all they claim
With her eyes of night and lips as bright as flame
Tangerine, when she dances by, senoritas stare and caballeros sigh
And I've seen toasts to Tangerine
Raised in every bar across the Argentine
Yes, she has them all on the run, but her heart belongs to just one
Her heart belongs to Tangerine!
Tangerine, she is all they say
With mascara'd eye and chapeaux by Dache.
Tangerine, with her lips of flame
If the color keeps, Louis Philippe's to blame.
And I've seen clothes on Tangerine
Where the label says "From Macy's Mezzanine".
Yes, she's got the guys in a whirl, but she's only fooling one girl
She's only fooling Tangerine!

You are on the balcony watching the crashing waves while this music streams beautifully into your ears reminding you of so many amorous, maudlin, schmaltzy & nostalgic times of the past with your sweet lollapalooza of the opposite gender…

"Tangerine" is a popular song. The music was written by Victor Schertzinger, the lyrics by Johnny Mercer. The song was published in 1941 and soon became a jazz standard.
It was introduced to a broad audience in the 1942 movie, The Fleet's In, produced by Paramount Pictures, directed by Schertzinger just before his death, and starring Dorothy Lamour, William Holden, Eddie Bracken, singer Cass Daley, and Betty Hutton in her feature film debut.
The song portrays a fictitious South American woman with universally recognized allure: "When she dances by, / Señoritas stare / And caballeros sigh." As one of Mercer's biographers explained the initial popularity: "Latin America, the one part of the world not engulfed in World War II, became a favorite topic for songs and films for Americans who wanted momentarily to forget about the conflagration.”
Helen O’Connell sings about the women's view of Tangerine in a jealous way! The men love her & the women are jealous!

Each one of us needs to look after the good of the
people around us, asking ourselves, “How can I help?”
That’s exactly what Jesus did. He didn’t make it easy
for Himself by avoiding people’s troubles, but waded
right in and helped out.
