Smithfield, London
Coordinates: 51°31′08″N 0°06′07″W / 51.519°N 0.102°W / 51.519; -0.102
Smithfield is also known for London's oldest church, St Bartholomew the Great, founded in 1123 AD. This Grade I listed building is noted for it's Norman architecture and has been featured in numerous films.
Smithfield is a locality in the ward of Farringdon Without situated at the City of London's northwest in central London, England. The principal street of the area is West Smithfield.
A number of valued City institutions are located in the area, such as St Bartholomew's Hospital, the Charterhouse, and Livery Halls notably those of the Butchers' and Haberdashers' Companies, but Smithfield is best known for its ancient meat market, dating from the 10th century, which is now London's only remaining wholesale market in continuous operation since medieval times.
Smithfield has borne witness to many bloody executions of heretics and political rebels over the centuries, including major historical figures such as Scottish patriot Sir William Wallace and Wat Tyler, leader of the Peasants' Revolt, among many other religious reformers and dissenters.

One of my favourite walks is around Clerkenwell and Smithfield Market. I love this area of London! There is so much history here that I cannot possibly squeeze it all into one video but here is a nice walking tour which you could do starting at Farringdon. Farringdon Station was the terminus of the first subway (underground) line in the world, serving the area of Smithfield, London's oldest meat market, which has existed for 1000 years. It was famous for wife selling in the 18th and 19th centuries and also martyrdom. William Wallace (or Braveheart) was hung drawn and quartered here and many protestant martyrs were burnt. One of my favourite walks is around Clerkenwell and Smithfield Market. I love this area of London! There is so much history here that I cannot possibly squeeze it all into one video but here is a nice walking tour which you could do starting at Farringdon.
Farringdon Station was the terminus of the first subway (underground) line in the world, serving the area of Smithfield, London's oldest meat market, which has existed for 1000 years. It was famous for wife selling in the 18th and 19th centuries and also martyrdom.
William Wallace (or Braveheart) was hung drawn and quartered here and many protestant martyrs were burnt. It was also where Watt Tyler's peasant's revolt came to a head in 1381 amongst many other things!

Then head over to ST John's Gate, the only existing remains of the Priory of the Knights of Saint John and then on to Clerkenwell Green where you will see The Clerks' Well and where Oliver Twist gets blamed for stealing a handkerchief!

As always some history thrown in between the pubs, including Holborn Viaduct, the gatehouse at St Bartholomew the Great, an anecdote from Barry Humphries about drinking Champagne from pewter tankards with John Betjeman, Bartholomew Fair and where the tradition of cutting ribbons to open supermarkets comes from, musings on why a pub would be called the "Old Red Cow", the handiwork of Sir Horace Jones, the British Art Nouveau style and how it related to William Morris, Charterhouse, Agatha Christie's Poirot, the Knights Hospitaller and St. John's Ambulance.

Smithfield wife selling wasn't strictly legal but it was quite a common practice. In Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge the protagonist sells his wife at the beginning of the book.
William Wallace was dragged here from London Bridge before being hung drawn and quartered and it's also the famous venue of the peasant's revolt, where Watt Tyler was famously killed.

Smithfield is also known for London's oldest church, St Bartholomew the Great, founded in 1123 AD. This Grade I listed building is noted for it's Norman architecture and has been featured in numerous films.
Smithfield is a locality in the ward of Farringdon Without situated at the City of London's northwest in central London, England. The principal street of the area is West Smithfield.
A number of valued City institutions are located in the area, such as St Bartholomew's Hospital, the Charterhouse, and Livery Halls notably those of the Butchers' and Haberdashers' Companies, but Smithfield is best known for its ancient meat market, dating from the 10th century, which is now London's only remaining wholesale market in continuous operation since medieval times.
Smithfield has borne witness to many bloody executions of heretics and political rebels over the centuries, including major historical figures such as Scottish patriot Sir William Wallace and Wat Tyler, leader of the Peasants' Revolt, among many other religious reformers and dissenters.
