Avenue House - A Collection Revealed Documentary Original
Ten years to date the collection of Professor Sir Albert Richardson, P.R.A. (1880-1964) - the celebrated collector, architect and President of the Royal Academy (1954-1956) was offered at auction. A collection which had remained untouched for almost half a century was sold at Christie’s London King Street on 18 and 19 September 2013.
‘All great collections are exercises in creativity and self-expression, but rarely do they give such a vivid impression of the collector’s discerning tastes, interests and idiosyncrasies as that formed by Professor Sir Albert Richardson. Providing a window into an older, more generous and civilised world, this collection is complete to its last detail, providing astonishing variety and a stark contrast to the frenetic pace of the modern world. Avenue House - A Collection Revealed (part)
This clip is only part of a much longer documentary which I filmed, produced and edited over a two year period, and eventually leading to the sale and dispersal of the former home of Professor Sir Albert Richardson. The premise of the documentary was to film the rooms as they were and record the stories associated with the contents.
I originally started filming towards the end of 2011 and finished the post production in 2013 and it was the best two years I have ever spent on a project. I started to visit Avenue House in 2009 and I had certainly never seen anything like it before. I had been to NT properties, but this house was different, it was lived in, it had been a home. For me it was certainly an immersive experience. The Georgian interiors, remained very much untouched, the ro...

London Somerset House Stairs, The Nelson stairs (The Navy Stair)
The Nelson Stair (Somerset House Stairs) soars dramatically over six floors providing access from the basement to the third floor. Each flight is different and adds an imaginative architectural flourish to the interior of Somerset House. Chambers had intended to build two staircases like this, but the second, planned for the eastern side of the building, was sacrificed to economy. In 1940 the Nelson Stair suffered severe bomb damage and was carefully restored in the 1950s to designs and specifications by Sir Albert Richardson.

The collection comprises around 650 lots and includes Old Master and British paintings, British watercolours and architectural drawings, English and European furniture, sculpture and objects, garden statuary, books, clocks, musical instruments and Georgian costume. In essence, the sale directly mirrors and celebrates the life and passions of Professor Sir Albert Richardson’. Christie’s website, 2013
This film is a record of that long gone collection. I started filming in December 2011 and would visit Avenue House over a two year period with borrowed filming equipment from The Natural History Museum, where I was working at the time. I would arrive on a Saturday morning and film as much of the collection as possible along with recording stories and anecdotes associated with the collection.
I hope you enjoy watching this film as much I did making it. All the best Douglas

Gear used GoPro Hero 8: https://amzn.to/3yz8Cm4
The Somerset House staircase leads to the Navy Board Room, which was host to meetings of the Navy Board, some attended by Lord Nelson. The navy Board moved from Seething Lane to Somerset House in 1789 and remained here for almost a century, occupying about a third of the building. From here it controlled the administration of the Navy building and repair of ships, health and subsistence of seamen, dockyards, equipment and stores and the management of contracts. Further upstream the Admiralty at Whitehall bore overall responsibility for the Navy and concerned itself with operations and policy. Relations between the two offices were not always cordial.
Somerset House is a large Neoclassical complex situated on the south side of the Strand in central London, overlooking the River Thames, just east of Waterloo Bridge. The Georgian quadrangle, which was built on the site of a Tudor palace belonging to the Duke of Somerset, was designed by Sir William Chambers in 1776. It was further extended with Victorian outer wings to the east and west in 1831 and 1856 respectively. Somerset House stood directly on the River Thames until the Victoria Embankment was built in the late 1860s.
The Georgian structure was built to be a grand public building housing various government and public-benefit society offices. Its present tenants are a mixture of various organisations, generally centred around the arts and education.
