The Singapore Botanic Gardens is a 156-year-old tropical garden located at the fringe of the Singapore's main shopping belt. It is one of three gardens, and the only tropical garden, to be honored as a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site. The Botanic Gardens has been ranked Asia's top park attraction since 2013, by TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards. It was declared the inaugural Garden of the Year, International Garden Tourism Awards in 2012, and received Michelin’s three-star rating in 2008.
The Botanic Gardens was founded at its present site in 1859 by the an agri-horticultural society. It played a pivotal role in the region's rubber trade boom in the early twentieth century, when its first scientific director Henry Nicholas Ridley, headed research into the plant's cultivation. By perfecting the technique of rubber extraction, still in use today, and promoting its economic value to planters in the region, rubber output expanded rapidly. At its height in the 1920s, the Malayan peninsula cornered half of the global latex production.
The Central Area (Chinese:新加坡中區, Malay:Zon Tengah, Tamil:சிங்கப்பூர் மாவட்ட), also called the City of Singapore, Singapore City or simply The City, is a city located in the south-eastern part of the Central Region of Singapore. Despite Singapore being a city-state itself, the Central Area is the approximate area in the country that is virtually defined as a "city", and as such, makes it the Republic's only city. As Singapore is a unitary state ruled by a single centralized government, the Central Area lacks any form of autonomy, with most of the city control being vested in various statutory boards and members of parliament from the Jalan Besar, Mountbatten and Tanjong Pagarconstituencies. Unlike most planning areas in Singapore, which are simply divided into subzones, the Central Area uniquely consists of 11 individual districts with notably smaller subzones contained within them. These districts are namely the Downtown Core, Marina East, Marina South, the Museum, Newton, Orchard, Outram, River Valley, Rochor, the Singapore River and Straits View districts. The city mostly surrounds the banks of the Singapore River and Marina Bay where the first settlements on the island were established shortly after the arrival of Raffles in 1819. Surrounding the boundaries of the city are Novena to the north, Kallang to the north and north-east, Tanglin to the north-west and west, Bukit Merah to the south-west and Marine Parade to the east. The south-easternmost limits of the city is enclosed in by Marina Barrage, where the mouth of Marina Bay meets the Singapore Strait.
The City of Singapore existed from 1951 onwards in the then BritishCrown colony of Singapore, with the City Council as the governing authority. Before 1951 the City Council was known as the Municipal Commission. The rest of the crown colony was under the authority of the Singapore Rural Board.
History
Creation and subsequent elections
In the 1948 and 1951 general elections in Singapore, constituencies were drawn along the boundary of the Municipal Commission and the Rural Board, each area was subdivided into a number of constituencies.
The municipality was then conferred city status by a royal charter from King George VI on 22 September 1951, when Singapore was then a Crown colony. The original Municipal Commission was therefore renamed City Council, and the Municipal Building was renamed City Hall.
The Singapore dollar or dollar (Malay: Ringgit Singapura, sign: $; code: SGD) is the official currency of Singapore. It is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively S$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. It is divided into 100 cents.
Between 1845 and 1939, Singapore used the Straits dollar.
This was replaced by the Malayan dollar, and, from 1953, the Malaya and British Borneo dollar, which were issued by the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya and British Borneo.
Singapore continued to use the common currency upon joining Malaysia in 1963, but only two years after Singapore's expulsion and independence from Malaysia in 1965, the monetary union between Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei broke down.
Singapore established the Board of Commissioners of Currency, Singapore, on 7 April 1967 and issued its first coins and notes. Nevertheless, the Singapore dollar was exchangeable at par with the Malaysian ringgit until 1973, and interchangeability with the Brunei dollar is still maintained.
Pearl smuggler Matt Gordon (Fred MacMurray) finds romance with Linda Grahame (Ava Gardner) just before the start of World War II. He proposes to her, and she accepts. However, when the Japanese attack Singapore, the church where she is waiting to marry him is bombed; Gordon searches frantically in the wreckage, but cannot find her. He is forced to sail away on his schooner.
With the end of the war, Gordon returns after five years and is met by Deputy Commissioner Hewitt (Richard Haydn), who is convinced he has returned for a hidden cache of pearls. So are Gordon's old criminal associates, Mr. Mauribus (Thomas Gomez) and his underling Sascha Barda (George Lloyd). Mauribus offers to buy the pearls, but Gordon denies he has any.

There are many skyscrapers in Raffles Place, Tanjong Pagar and Marina Bay CBD with a height limit of 280m. It is one of the eleven planning areas located within the most urbanised Central Area, forming the latter's dense urban core.
As the financial Heart of Singapore, the Downtown Core houses the headquarters and offices of numerous corporations, as well as the Singapore Exchange. The area is also home to many governmental institutions, notably the seat of Parliament and the Supreme Court of Singapore.
