The Berlin International Film Festival (German:Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin), also called the Berlinale, is one of the world's leading film festivals and most reputable media events. It is held annually in Berlin, Germany.
Founded in West Berlin in 1951, the festival has been celebrated annually in February since 1978. With around 300,000 tickets sold and 500,000 admissions it is considered the largest publicly attended film festival worldwide based on actual attendance rates. Up to 400 films are shown in several sections, representing a comprehensive array of the cinematic world. Around twenty films compete for the awards called the Golden and Silver Bears. Since 2001 the director of the festival has been Dieter Kosslick.
The European Film Market (EFM), a film trade fair held simultaneously to the Berlinale, is a major industry meeting for the international film circuit. The trade fair serves distributors, film buyers, producers, financiers and co-production agents. The Berlinale Talent Campus, a week-long series of lectures and workshops, gathers young filmmakers from around the globe. It partners with the festival itself and is considered to be a forum for upcoming artists.
Silver Bear (Silberner Bär), an award for the Berlin International Film Festival introduced in 1956 in Germany for individual achievements in direction and acting, and for best short film.
Silver Bear ammunition, a brand of ammunition cartridges manufactured by Barnaul Cartridge Plant in Russia.

CinemaChile congratulates Sebastian Lelio, Daniela Vega, Fabula, and the whole cast and crew of the film, and celebrates this historic triumph for Chilean cinema
The most prized award as of late for Chilean cinema became a reality: “A Fantastic Woman” won the Oscar tonight for Best Foreign Language film and turned Sebastian Lelio into the first Chilean director consecrated with the most important award for a feature film in the cinema industry. This was the second time that Chile secured a nomination, in 2012, the film “No” by Pablo Larraín was also one of the 5 selected. “It’s a source of pride for the whole country, we’re deeply happy,” said Lelio in his thank-you speech tonight.
Hours before its participation in the 90th anniversary of the Oscars, “A Fantastic Woman” received the Spirit Award for Best International Film, a prize granted to independent films in the United States and which, in its 33rd version, opted to recognize the effort of the Chilean film starring Daniela Vega. And a few weeks ago in Madrid, the crew celebrated the Goya Award for Best Ibero-American Film.
Already in 2016, our country had been represented at the Academy Awards with “Bear Story”, a national animated short that won the Oscar in that category, striking a landmark for national cinema.
The international recognition of the Fabula production began during the 2017 version of the Berlin International Film Festival, where the film won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay. At the same event, the film won the Teddy Award, a recognition handed to films with LGBT themes.
In September of the same year, the San Sebastian Film Festival granted the film the Sebastiane Latino Award, which distinguishes the Latin American production that best represents LGBT rights.
The film managed to blaze the trail on the North American scene, having been nominated to the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards. It was likewise distinguished at the Havana Film Festival and recognized at several Latin American film festivals.
It won the awards for Best Feature-Length Fiction, Best Director, and Best Female Actor in the latest version of the Fénix Awards, and won a Special Jury Mention, on top of the award for Best Actress at the Palm Springs Festival.
Pablo Larraín, one of the producers of the film, highlighted the honor it meant to be chosen by the Academy with the story of a transgender woman. “As Fabula (production company), we’re proud that this message is being sent from here to the world, by way of a film that comes to present a human context from a place of beauty,” he said.
Also producer of the film, Juan de Dios Larraín, commented on the opportunity that “we have to look at this as an entire generation that’s putting the Chilean flag everywhere.”
Meanwhile, Daniela Vega has become a figure of great international recognition, becoming the first transgender presenter at the Oscars, featured on the cover of several magazines, and has been granted media attention of big industry actors, audiences, and industry names.
