How To Lay Siege To A Star Fortress In The 16th and Early 17th Century
From the 14th to the 17th century the star fortress became ever more important for siege warfare. Engineers and tacticians developed fortresses that were more elaborate and more solid than ever before. As a result, siege warfare reached an immense level of complexity. A to and fro of military innovations began – improved fortifications countered improved gunpowder weapons and vice versa. This went on until the end of the 16th century, when according to historian Stephan Hoppe, “a successful solution to all important issues of defense...

When it comes to siege warfare there’s no getting around one name. Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban. This French military engineer changed the face of siege warfare profoundly and lastingly. He designed the most resilient fortresses ever seen up to his times and developed a nearly infallible offensive siege routine. When Vauban entered the stage of history in the middle of the 17th century, France was in a predicament. Medieval sieges have become a favorite of moviemakers and game studios. Impenetrable walls, spectacular siege engines, a good dose of hands-on fighting and destruction make for an ideal canvas for heroism and drama. As history buffs we celebrate this attention. As historians, we often shed a tear. In general, most sieges were by far not as spectacular as depicted in popular media. Historical authenticity often falls victim to drama. Over time, the emphasis on dramatic storytelling in pop culture together with the doubtful work of some historians have created several misconceptions about medieval sieges. In this video we’re going to tackle five of these misunderstandings and look at one controversial aspect as a bonus at the end.

In 1686, Chinese cannons bombarded the Russian fortress of Albazin for several weeks. The Qing Kangxi Emperor had sent an army to the frigid and inhospitable east of Siberia to capture the fortress and stop the expansion of the Tsardom of Russia in the region. But despite relentless bombardment, superior numbers, and ferocious assaults, his troops still struggled to capture the fortress. This was not due to any fundamental inferiority of the Chinese forces to the Tsardom’s troops. Instead, the trouble arose from the clash of Eastern siege methods with a Western-style star fortress with bastions. Chinese siege tactics differed significantly from those practiced in the West, which typically featured massive fortifications with bastions, systematic trench digging, and the use of heavy artillery. In this video, we’ll investigate the reasons for these differences and examine how early modern Chinese siege warfare differed from that in Europe.

The Castles Builders - Episode 2: Siege & Storm - How Medieval Castles Were Attacked And Defended | History Documentary
Watch 'Castle Builders - Episode 3' here: https://youtu.be/cAi67sqjHC8
This is the story of how the medieval castle fared under the attacks which it was designed to withstand. With thrilling dramatic reconstructions and state-of-the-art computer graphics, we see the castle in the heat of battle and show how it withstood the siege engines and mass assaults that this age of endless conflict threw at it.
The finessing of castle defences was a process that took hundreds of years. From the stone keeps of the Normans, to the concentric walls of the later Middle Ages, and the “active defence” and architectural sophistication of citadels like Carcassonne in south-western France, the Castle Builders were always battling to keep the castle strong.
As they faced siege and storm, they devised structures which confronted the enemy with layer after layer of defence and exposed them to deadly peril at every turn.
We feature the Siege of Rochester in 1215, one of the bloodiest in English history, and one which revealed a crucial design fault in the great square stone keeps.
A powerful citadel could underpin the authority of its lord, or establish the rule of a king over a new territory. But when a castle built by an invading king fell into the hands of a conquered people, it became a weapon turned against its own makers, a highly potent symbol of revolt. As we’ll see, that’s what happened in Wales in 1404.
After centuries of dominance, the castle becomes vulnerable to artillery. The big guns of Oliver Cromwell’s New Model Army ended Royalist resistance in the English Civil War, and brought the end of an era for the castle.

From the 14th to the 17th century the star fortress became ever more important for siege warfare. Engineers and tacticians developed fortresses that were more elaborate and more solid than ever before. As a result, siege warfare reached an immense level of complexity. Throughout the middle ages, high and relatively thin walls were enough protection against storming ladders, siege equipment and projectiles.
But since the 14th century ever more effective firearms and artillery challenged the defensive potential of fortresses. A to and fro of military innovations began – improved fortifications countered improved gunpowder weapons and vice versa. This went on until the end of the 16th century, when according to historian Stephan Hoppe, “a successful solution to all important issues of defense had been found”. One famous type of stronghold that was crucial to this evolution was the trace italienne better known as star fortress. It was to be found quickly all over Europe, though in a variety of forms. Historian John A. Lynn states that at the same time the number of fortified sites increased drastically, so that central European warfare shifted away from open field battles and finally revolved above all around sieges.

Spain and the Dutch Republic had both honed their siege skills in the Eighty Years’ War, a conflict in which most military action consisted of sieges. The French, however, had been making little progress. Their style of assault “amounted to little more than an ill-prepared storming of the work targeted for attack” , as the expert for the French army of the Grand Siècle John Lynn puts it. Soon, headlong frontal assaults, often involving unnecessary losses, were known as attack "a la française”, “the French way”. Vauban was the man to bring about change. Not only did he bring France to eye level with its adversaries, but he in fact established a routine of the siege attack that was to remain unaltered for almost two centuries. Even the manual “Military Engineering (Part II) Attack and Defence of Fortresses” which the British took to France in WW1 was still largely based on his principles. Moreover, Vauban perfected the bastion fort and equipped the French border with a line of fortresses that repeatedly proved their worth up until Napoleon’s times. Vauban was the first military engineer ever to rise through the ranks, thereby paving the way for a professional class of military engineers. Without further ado, let’s look at how Vauban changed the face of European siege warfare.

German military doctrine is all about mobility and operational maneuverability, but there comes a time in this war, well, several times, when an actual classic siege is called for. So how does the Wehrmacht respond to that call? Find out today.
