Fransiska Malfait - The Rarest Types of EDS
The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes comprise a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of heritable connective tissue disorders, which are characterized by joint hypermobility, skin hyperextensibility, and tissue friability. The 2017 International EDS Classification recognizes 13 EDS subtypes, for which defects have been identified in 19 different genes that code for extracellular matrix proteins. Some of these conditions are very rare; these are usually very complex and multisystemic conditions. During this webinar, the clinical presentation and (molecular) diagnosis of these rarest EDS subtypes is discussed and illustrated, and management tips are discussed.

EDS & HSD Awareness Month 2024
Times Square, in New York City, USA, is one of the world's most visited tourist attractions. Approximately 330,000 people pass through Times Square daily, and we are delighted to have raised awareness of the Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) there from May 4-10 during EDS and HSD Awareness Month.
The Ehlers-Danlos Society showed a 15-second awareness video on the huge Nasdaq billboard, the seven-story-tall Nasdaq tower with 10,000 square feet of signage. The video was shown four times per hour across seven days.
This is incredible for awareness and we had the opportunity to reach so many new people and make them aware of EDS and HSD.

Consider This If You Have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) diagnosis often relies on flexibility assessments and genetic testing to determine specific genetic variants. However, muscle tone—whether hypertonic (increased tone) or hypotonic (decreased tone)—is crucial for understanding joint stability and may lead to misdiagnosis. Individuals with conditions like cerebellar disorders can exhibit symptoms similar to EDS, such as tremors and joint instability, but have different underlying neurological issues. Therefore, careful evaluation of muscle tone and related symptoms is essential to avoid conflating EDS with other disorders that present similar characteristics.

Ehlers-Danlos Test On EDS vs. Non-EDS Person
EDS / Ehlers-danlos syndrome ... What does it look like when someone with and someone without EDS is tested on the hypermobile EDS diagnostic criteria? Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a genetic connective tissue disorder that is estimated to occur at least 1 in 5,000. EDS is a painful condition that causes joint hypermobility, dislocations, dysautonomia, poor wound healing, stretchy or velvety skin, and so many debilitating symptoms. WHAT’S EHLERS-DANLOS SYNDROME?
The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) are a group of more than 13 genetic connective tissue disorders that affect the joints and ligaments, blood vessels, gastrointestinal tract, and autonomic nervous system, among others. The most common type of EDS is hypermobile EDS (hEDS), which used to be known at type III. Some of the most common symptoms and co-morbidities of hEDS include chronic joint pain, joint instability and dislocations, dysautonomia, and GI tract dysmotility.
