Cenaxo- Sheffield Island Light Restoration
Projects don't come much cooler than this one. When the Sheffield Island Lighthouse was in need of structural repair and restoration, the Norwalk Seaport Association retained Cenaxo, LLC for the project. Cenaxo, in turn, invited Provision Pictures to come along because...well...it's a LIGHTHOUSE. Cenaxo is a unique construction company that specializes in architectural restoration and preservation. Blending modern technology with traditional construction methods and materials, Cenaxo repairs what is faulty in a structure, but they bring a stewardly approach that remains true to the integrity of the building-- that "honors" the history of the structure. Sheffield Island Lighthouse
The Sheffield Island Lighthouse is about a 45 minute boat ride from the shores of Norwalk. We boarded the ferry, which was packed with couples, families and picnic baskets. Once we arrived at the island, we saw the gorgeous lighthouse in the distance and couldn’t wait to begin exploring. But, just like a scene from a horror film, chaos quickly ensued. Before we could snap a decent photo of the lighthouse, we were attacked by hundreds, if not thousands, of mosquitos. No one was safe. Within minutes, kids were crying, picnics were abandoned and people scattered to find shelter from the bugs. As we write this, days later, we are still scratching at the welts covering our bodies. We found shelter on corner of the island where the winds were strongest swatting aw...

Visitors can board the Seaport ferry at the Sheffield Island dock, adjacent to Stroffolino Bridge, corner of Washington and Water Streets, South Norwalk for their trip to the island, the lighthouse or harbor cruises.
Each year the ferry takes thousands of visitors back to a time when this and other lighthouses were critical to coastal and oceangoing shipping.

Sheffield Island Lighthouse: Norwalk Harbor - Cinematic Drone Footage
I was asked by the Norwalk Seaport Association to come out to their island and film some cinematic footage of the Island and the lighthouse.
The lighthouse was built on Sheffield Island in 1868 and is over 150 years old. It stands at the westernmost end of the Island chain overlooking Greens Ledge. It had a relativity short service lifespan only being used until 1902 when it was replaced by the Greens Ledge lighthouse as a result of the SILH being to short and doing an inadequate job of warning ships away from Green Ledge an one mile long rock ledge jutting out from Sheffield Island.
The Seaport Association is a Non profit organization whose goal is to protect and preserve the SILH. They run tours and private events on the island. If you're interested I would 100% suggest booking a trip...

They fix it, they preserve it and make it sound for the future, they breathe new life into it, but they don't make it new
This video explores how the company strikes that sometimes-delicate balance while meeting the unique challenges of working offshore. Beyond having the privilege of spending glorious spring days atop a lighthouse overlooking Long Island Sound, our favorite aspect of the project was that each shoot day began with a 20-minute boat ride.
Check out the video, then go see Sheffield Island and the lighthouse for yourself. The fine folks at the Norwalk Seaport Association will be glad to take you & you'll be glad they did: http://www.seaport.org

We found shelter on corner of the island where the winds were strongest swatting away the bugs. As we sat counting down the minutes until the boat would take us back, we looked back at abandoned yard games, and a lighthouse in the distance that was too treacherous to visit. We are not sure if we will ever go back, but if you’re really motivated to visit this lighthouse, make sure you pack lots of bug spray and go on an incredibly windy day.

The Seaport Association, a non-profit 501-c3 organization was started in 1978 by a group of volunteers that work tirelessly to maintain the historic maritime treasure of Connecticut, Sheffield Island Lighthouse, on the National Register of Historic Places. Due to COVID-19, we desperately need funds to offset the loss of income due to our inability to implement our key fundraisers making your donation more important than ever. With your donation we will continue to preserve and maintain Sheffield Island Lighthouse and to enlighten lives with the stories of our shared maritime cultural heritage, now and for generations to come.
COVID-19 has dramatically impacted all our fundraising programs from our Gala Dinner, Golf Tournament, and Sheffield Island Family Events to our Clam Bakes and BBQ dinners on Sheffield Island. For the first time in 42 years we had to cancel the beloved Norwalk Oyster Festival, our major fundraising event of the year. To date, our cruise schedule is in limbo and dependent on State regulations. We desperately need funds to offset the loss of income from our inability to implement our key fundraisers due to COVID-19, making your donation more important than ever.
The Seaport Association has taken thousands of local children, as part of our educational program on a cruise to Sheffield Island for free because of our fundraising efforts and generous donations. It is so rewarding to watch them explore every nook and cranny of the Lighthouse, learn about our maritime heritage, explore the adjoining 35-acre Wildlife Refuge, and play on the beach. This experience teaches children about the past and encourages them to appreciate our shared cultural heritage.
Year after year, our volunteers have helped the Association to organize the fundraising events that have enabled us to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in improving the amenities and infrastructure of Sheffield Island. Last year we built a new wooden pavilion in order to accommodate our guests in comfort and to serve as a classroom for visiting students. We also installed a “new” antique telescope to enhance the visitor experience. The view of the Connecticut shoreline to the Manhattan skyline from the island is spectacular.
As we adjust to the new normal we want to stay positive and not lose the momentum we have so diligently strived to achieve. We need your help and are asking you to send donate today to the Sheffield Island Lighthouse Fund.
How Your Donation Will Be Spent

Description - The Sheffield Island Lighthouse in Norwalk dates back to 1868 and was built to help ships reach Connecticut's Sheffield Island. The Victorian-style lighthouse features 10 rooms and has quite the troubled past. In the early 1970s, the lighthouse's original keeper died suddenly while watching passing ships with a spyglass. His death was never fully explained. Fast forward to the early 1990s when an archaeologist was working on the historic site preservation, he reported several mysterious occurrences. He heard mystical music coming from the shores, distant cries for help, and the sound of a foghorn—despite there being no foghorn on the island. Many believe these odd sounds are attributed to the ghost of Captain Robert Sheffield, who originally purchased the islands in the early 1800s. Sheffield was known to have a knack for strange musical instruments as well.
