Feeding America

Feeding America is a United States-based non-profit organization that is a nationwide network of food banks that feeds more than 46 million people through food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other community-based agencies in communities across America and leads the nation in the fight against hunger.

The CEO is Diana Aviv. Feeding America was known as America's Second Harvest until August 31, 2008. (For Second Harvest Toronto, see Second Harvest).

History

In the late 1960s, John van Hengel, a retired businessman in Phoenix, Arizona began volunteering at a local soup kitchen, and began soliciting food donations for the kitchen. He ended up with far more food than the kitchen could use in its operations. Around this time, he spoke with one of the clients, who told him that she regularly fed her family with discarded items from the grocery store's garbage bins. She told him that the food quality was fine, but that there should be a place where unwanted food could be stored and later accessed by people who needed it, similar to how banks store money.

Second Harvest Toronto

Second Harvest Toronto is a food rescue and redistribution charitable organization that strives to decrease hunger in the city of Toronto. The organization is based on the principle that fresh and prepared food should not be going to waste while in the same city people are hungry. As of 2010, Second Harvest rescues food from 600 food providers in the Greater Toronto Area including restaurants, grocery stores, and food warehouses. The organization delivers food using a fleet of eight refrigerated trucks that deliver the food to 200-plus social service agencies in Toronto, including soup kitchens, women’s shelters, children’s programs, and drop-in centers. Food is re-distributed within 24 hours, and most often the same day. Second Harvest organizes several special events each year, the largest of which are Toronto Taste and Second Harvest Hero Day (formerly called "Lunch Money Day") each year to add to their fund-raising base.

History and timeline

Second Harvest Toronto was founded in April 1985 by Ina Andre and Joan Clayton, who also founded Windfall Basics in 1991. Under the direction of Andre and Clayton, the organization began small and consisted of picking up waste food in a hatchback from restaurants and grocery stores and distributing it across the city.

Second Harvest (novel)

Second Harvest (French: Regain) is a 1930 novel by the French writer Jean Giono. The narrative is set in a nearly abandoned village, where the last heir succeeds to find love in a woman who saves him from a river.

The book was published in English in 1939 as Harvest, in 1967 as Regain and in 1999 as Second Harvest. It was the basis for the 1937 film Harvest directed by Marcel Pagnol.

Reception

Publishers Weekly wrote in 1999: "Giono invests his prose with stunning descriptions of the countryside and lyrical evocations of the majestic seasons ('Spring clung to his shoulders like a big cat'). The couple's romance is practical and their partnership utilitarian, but Giono renders their love lavish as they make a life where the air smells of lavender and where 'such a passion has seized the earth... such a passion!'"

Feeding America

Feeding America is a United States-based non-profit organization that is a nationwide network of food banks that feeds more than 46 million people through food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other community-based agencies in communities across America and leads the nation in the fight against hunger.

The CEO is Diana Aviv. Feeding America was known as America's Second Harvest until August 31, 2008. (For Second Harvest Toronto, see Second Harvest).

History

In the late 1960s, John van Hengel, a retired businessman in Phoenix, Arizona began volunteering at a local soup kitchen, and began soliciting food donations for the kitchen. He ended up with far more food than the kitchen could use in its operations. Around this time, he spoke with one of the clients, who told him that she regularly fed her family with discarded items from the grocery store's garbage bins. She told him that the food quality was fine, but that there should be a place where unwanted food could be stored and later accessed by people who needed it, similar to how banks store money.
