Bootleg: Guidable Self-Supervision for Named Entity Disambiguation -- Chris Re (Stanford University)

Hand-built features make it challenging to deploy and maintain NED–especially in multiple locales. While at Apple in 2018, we built a self-supervised system for NED that was deployed in a handful of locales and that improved performance of downstream models significantly. However, due to the fog of production, it was unclear what aspects of these models were most valuable. Motivated by this experience, we built Bootleg, a clean-slate, open-source, self-supervised system to improve tail performance using a simple transformer-based architecture. Bootleg improves tail generalization through a new inverse regularization scheme to favor more generalizable signals automatically. Bootleg-like models are used by several downstream applications. As a result, quality issues fixed in one application may need to be fixed independently in many applications. Thus, we initiate the study of techniques to fix systematic errors in self-supervised models using weak supervision, augmentation, and training set refinement. Bootleg achieves new state-of-the-art performance on the three major NED benchmarks by up to 3.3 F1 points, and it improves performance over BERT baselines on tail slices by 50.1 F1 points.

The United States Navy Sea, Air, and Land (SEAL) Teams, commonly known as Navy SEALs, are the U.S. Navy's primary special operations force and a component of the Naval Special Warfare Command. Among the SEALs' main functions are conducting small-unit special operation missions in maritime, jungle, urban, arctic, mountainous, and desert environments. SEALs are typically ordered to capture or to eliminate high level targets, or to gather intelligence behind enemy lines.

The Loch Ness Monster is a cryptid who reputedly inhabits Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It is similar to other supposed lake monsters in Scotland and elsewhere, though its description varies from one account to the next, with most describing it as large in size. Popular interest and belief in the animal's existence has varied since it was first brought to the world's attention in 1933. Evidence of its existence is anecdotal, with minimal and much-disputed photographic material and sonar readings.
The most common speculation among believers is that the creature represents a line of long-surviving plesiosaurs.[4] Much of the scientific community regards the Loch Ness Monster as a modern-day myth, and explains sightings as including misidentifications of more mundane objects, outright hoaxes, and wishful thinking.[5] Despite this, it remains one of the most famous examples of cryptozoology.
The creature has been affectionately referred to by the nickname Nessie[b] (Scottish Gaelic: Niseag)[6] since the 1940s.[7]
History
In August 1933 a motorcyclist named Arthur Grant claimed to have nearly hit the creature while approaching Abriachan on the north-eastern shore, at about 1 a.m. on a moonlit night. Grant claimed that he saw a small head attached to a long neck, and that the creature saw him and crossed the road back into the loch. A veterinary student, he described it as a hybrid between a seal and a plesiosaur. Grant said he dismounted and followed it to the loch, but only saw ripples.[17][27] Some believe this story was intended as a humorous explanation of a motorcycle accident.[28]
Sightings of the monster increased following the building of a road along the loch in early 1933, bringing both workmen and tourists to the formerly isolated area.[29] Sporadic land sightings continued until 1963, when film of the creature was shot in the loch from a distance of 4 kilometres. Because of the distance at which it was shot, it has been described as poor quality.[30]
Chief Constable William Fraser (1938)
In 1938, Inverness-shire Chief Constable William Fraser wrote a letter stating that it was beyond doubt the monster existed. His letter expressed concern regarding a hunting party that had arrived armed with a specially-made harpoon gun and were determined to catch the monster "dead or alive". He believed his power to protect the monster from the hunters was "very doubtful". The letter was released by the National Archives of Scotland on 27 April 2010.[31][32]
C. B. Farrel (1943)
In May 1943, C. B. Farrel of the Royal Observer Corps was supposedly distracted from his duties by a Nessie sighting. He claimed to have been about 230 metres (750 ft) away from a large-eyed, 'finned' creature, which had a 6-to-9-metre (20 to 30 ft) long body, and a neck that protruded about 1.2–1.5 metres (3 ft 11 in–4 ft 11 in) out of the water.[33]
Sonar contact (1954)
In December 1954 a strange sonar contact was made by the fishing boat Rival III. The vessel's crew observed sonar readings of a large object keeping pace with the boat at a depth of 146 metres (479 ft). It was detected travelling for 800 m (2,600 ft) in this manner, before contact was lost, but then found again later.[33] Many sonar attempts had been made previously, but most were either inconclusive or negative.

For those looking for one, I am not a tickling ears Preacher. Unity of the Body means that I am to be long suffering as God walks with you on the road to transformation. It is not an excuse to walk according to your own will, inconsistent with the Word of the Gospel, taking scripture in eisegesis to explain away your own pursuits. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. Matthew 6:6. I do not wish to make anyone stumble and this scripture is pretty clear about prayer. So, as the issue has come up I will be praying in private from now on to stop my Brother/Sister from Stumbling. Matthew 7:6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. And for clarification I will be asking the Holy Spirit to direct me on the Biblical applications of prayer to the Children of Disobedience and within the Body. Again as my Brother and Sister may not stumble and God may not be mocked by those without contrition/repentance or reverence for the Lord or His Body of Believers. Please do not pray for "The Lost" and use your privileged prayer time with God to instruct them to their face regarding your belief in their hopelessness, wickedness or foolishness in their religious beliefs or pursuits. This has the potential to insult and create harm for this person God loves and the Body of Christ. You would not do this to another Christian, why then to a Jew, Muslim or Pagan believer? God loves them, intercede for their healing, restitution, sight but please don't use your prayers in their presence to proselytize them to Salvation? I see no examples of this being ensampled/exampled in the Bible as it has the potential to insult or alienate those we are seeking to offer invitation. Please Give way to the Power of the Spirit. He knows what they need and is the only one who can save, seal and give grace to those you meet. Thank you for listening and may God be with you as you spread His Glorious Word of Salvation for ALL men.
