On November 8, 1936, four art teachers began what was to become the High School of Art and Design, the School of Industrial Art, in a former Manhattan elementary school at 257 West 40th Street, which for a time had housed a WPAFederal Theatre Project locale. Initially, they used orange crates and plywood to make storage and desks. One of the co-founders, John B. Kenny, became principal in 1941. The school soon moved to a building on East 79th Street in the Upper East Side, the former annex to the Benjamin Franklin High School. In September 1960, the school changed its name to the High School of Art and Design and moved to 1075 Second Avenue in east Midtown.
Industrial design is a process of design applied to products that are to be manufactured through techniques of mass production. Its key characteristic is that design is separated from manufacture: the creative act of determining and defining a product's form takes place in advance of the physical act of making a product, which consists purely of repeated, often automated, replication. This distinguishes industrial design from craft-based design, where the form of the product is determined by the product's creator at the time of its creation.
All industrial products are the result of a design process, but the nature of this process can take many forms: it can be conducted by an individual or a large team; it can emphasize intuitive creativity or calculated scientific decision-making; and it can be influenced by factors as varied as materials, production processes, business strategy and prevailing social, commercial or aesthetic attitudes. The role of an industrial designer is to create and execute design solutions for problems of form, function, usability, physical ergonomics, marketing, brand development, and sales.

Devon Rodriguez shares his artistic journey with the High School of Art & Design
I went back to the High School of Art & Design to share my experiences to hopefully inspire the students. I’ll never forget how inspired I felt everyday when I attended that school. I was mainly inspired by my painting class with James Harrington. Also, walking around the streets of Midtown was very different from the streets of the South Bronx. Everyday I felt a sense hope. Hope that I wasn’t stuck where I was raised and that one day I’ll become a successful artist. I wanted to show them that a few years ago, I sat in their exact seat, in that exact classroom, with the same teacher. I showed them everything that worked for me over the last 10 years, and how I used TikTok and social media in general to catapult my talent. I hope they enjoyed it throughout all of my nervous pauses and stut...

hey guys, I distinctly remember stressing HEAVILY over what art school I should go to so I thought I would share the biggest things that helped me decide! The Death of Detail In Design
Will industrial design become radicalized and polarized like everything else seems to? With so many things competing for our attention, details and nuance get lost in the noise, and all that anyone notices in a design is the the general proportions and silhouette. This has been a trend for the last year or two, and I think it will continue to be a major industrial design trend through 2021....but only time will tell.

I hope they enjoyed it throughout all of my nervous pauses and stutters lol. After the talk, I sat down alongside them for life drawing and it brought back some beautiful memories. hey guys, I distinctly remember stressing HEAVILY over what art school I should go to so I thought I would share the biggest things that helped me decide! Even though I have some funny/bad stories from my art school, I genuinely think it was the best possible choice and was overall a super positive experience!

In this video I give you an overview of the trends product designers are using in 2020 for form, details and finish. I also show you how to incorporate the trends into products of your own. In this video I use the examples of a lamp, a speaker and a wireless phone charger.
Love them or hate them, trends are out there and a lot of designers are using them in their work. Trends can be an easy way to make your products look modern and connect with consumers.
Hope you enjoy the video! If you think I missed any trends, let me know in the comments below!
I am using the Miro iOS app for the mood boards and Keyshot on Mac OS to show off my product designs (displayed on iPad using Sidecar). I modeled the design in a mixture of Rhinoceros and Fusion 360 on Mac OS.

I've been teaching at my former working place and I really enjoy it so I thought let's share some of it with you. I find people neglect their fundamentals quite often so I made this video so we can practice together.
I actually shot a video in the weekend but i wasn't satisfied so I had to re shoot everything today. A reminder to myself: CLEAN THE LENS NEXT TIME!
I'm curious if you like this long format videos or if I should try and keep them shorter?
