Saint Fernando: History's Greatest King? | Córdoba's Fall, 1236 - RECONQUEST OF SPAIN
As a young man, Fernando III, King of León-Castile, successfully navigated the tumultuous landscape of his family’s internal conflicts. He was a valiant general, and a dedicated Christian, who led many crusades into al-Andalus. His most determined opponent was Ibn-Hud, a former mercenary who claimed to be a descendant of the old emirs of Zaragoza. A gifted commander and courageous warrior, Ibn-Hud rallied the Muslims of al-Andalus, and stood in defiance of King Fernando. Timeline of the Rulers of Spain
Spain, a state that evolved from the beginnings of the Reconquista and through colonial conquests to one of the greatest nations. Let’s take a closer look at those men and women who made it become one of the most influential countries that ever existed!
Q&A :
1 - Why doesn't the video cover every state in the Iberian Peninsula?
The video focuses on the history of the Kingdom of Spain and its predecessor states, excluding some other Iberian Peninsula states such as Al-Andalus.
Although the Kingdom of Spain was formed by the union of Castile and Aragon, I chose to focus on Castile as it was the more influential part.
2 - Why does the video start with the Kings of Asturias?
The Kingdom of Asturias is the earliest predecessor state of todays Kingdom of Spain in terms of religion and culture...

Ultimately this battle would culminate at Córdoba, the one-time capital of the Umayyad Arab conquerors of Spain.

Historical documentary looking at the early life of Berengaria of Navarre.
Berengaria is a little known queen in history as the queen and wife of the famous English monarch, Richard I, better known as Richard the Lionheart.
Berengaria is famed for being the only English consort not to have set foot in England during the reign of her husband and her time as queen.
Berengaria of Navarre is thought to have been born in Pamplona, Navarre (now part of Spain) somewhere between 1165 and 1170.
Unfortunately, at this time, only exact dates of births were recorded for male descendants.
She was the oldest child born to King Sancho VI of Navarre and Sancha of Castile.
Her younger brother would go on to become King Sancho VII of Navarre and her younger sister, Blanche, would become Countess of Champagne.
In eleven eighty five, Berengaria would be granted the Fief of Monreal by her father.
Throughout Berengaria’s youth, the mother of Richard the first of England, Eleanor of Aquitaine, would seek and betrothal between her son and Berengaria.
A union would suit Eleanor’s political position as an alliance with Navarre would defend Aquitaine’s southern border.
An open betrothal was impossible though, as Richard I was engaged to the half sister of the King of France, Phillip II, Alys.
The engagement would be broken though in eleven ninety in Messina in Sicily, maybe through rumours the Alys had become the mistress of Richard’s own father, Henry II.
During eleven ninety, Eleanor of Aquitaine would meet King Sancho in Pamplona, where a secret betrothal would be held in the honour of Berengaria at the Royal Palace of Olite.
Richard would request that Berengaria should be brought to Messina during eleven ninety.
There, Berengaria, would be placed in the care of Richard’s sister, Joan, who at that time was the widowed Queen of Sicily.
At this time, it was lent and no marriage could take place.
Also, Richard was away fighting the third crusade in the Holy Lands.
When, Berengaria ship was en route to meet up with Richard, it become marooned on the island of Cyprus and both Berengaria and Joan were threatened by the ruler of the island, Isaac Comnenus.
Richard though would lead an army to rescue both Berengaria and his sister and overthrow Isaac Comnenus.
Berengaria and Richard were married on the 12th May 1191 in the Chapel of St George in Limassol,Cyprus
On the same day Berengaria was crowned Queen of England in a service conducted by the archbishop of Bordeaux and the Bishops of Evreux and Bayonne.
After their marriage, Berengaria would travel to the Holy Lands with Richard.
It is known that she was present at the Siege of Acre in 1191.
She has also been reported as being instrumental in securing a peace treaty, known as the Treaty of Jaffa, between her husband and the Muslim leader, Saladin.
The treaty was finally signed at the beginning of September 1192 following the Battle of Jaffa between July and August of that year.
The treaty would lead to a three year truce between the two armies.
Following the signing of the treaty, Berengaria would travel back to Europe alone, leaving her husband in the holy lands.
She would leave with Joan on the 29th September 1192 from Acre.
She would have probably travelled first to Cyprus then on to Italy, via Brindisi before staying in Rome for six months.
After leaving Rome, she would travel through Pisa, Genoa and on to Marseille, finally to her home at Beaufort-en-Vallee in what is now western France.

The Kingdom of Asturias is the earliest predecessor state of todays Kingdom of Spain in terms of religion and culture.
The map shows the territory controlled by the ruler at the end of his reign.
