Fort Knox is a United States Army post in Kentucky south of Louisville and north of Elizabethtown. The 109,000 acre (170sq mi, 441km²) base covers parts of Bullitt, Hardin, and Meade counties. It currently holds the Army human resources Center of Excellence to include the Army Human Resources Command, United States Army Cadet Command and the United States Army Accessions Command.
Fort Knox, now Fort Knox State Park or Fort Knox State Historic Site, is located on the western bank of the Penobscot River in the town of Prospect, Maine, about 5 miles (8.0km) from the mouth of the river. Built between 1844 and 1869, it was the first fort in Maine built of granite (instead of wood). It is named after Major General Henry Knox, the first U.S. Secretary of War and Commander of Artillery during the American Revolutionary War, who at the end of his life lived not far away in Thomaston. The fort was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970, as a virtually intact example of a mid-19th century granite coastal fortification. Fort Knox also serves as the entry site for the observation tower of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge that opened to the public on May 19, 2007.
Background
Local memory of the humiliation of Maine at the hands of the British during the American Revolution and again during the War of 1812 contributed to subsequent anti-British feeling in Eastern Maine. The Penobscot Expedition of 1779 aimed to force the British from Castine, but ended in a debacle. The Americans lost 43 ships and suffered approximately 500 casualties in the worst naval defeat for the United States prior to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Then in autumn 1814, during the War of 1812, a British naval force and soldiers sailed up the Penobscot and defeated an outnumbered American force in the Battle of Hampden. The British followed their victory by looting both Hampden and Bangor. The American defeat contributed to the post-war movement for Maine's statehood, which occurred in 1820, as Massachusetts had failed to protect the region.
Bitter:Sweet is a trip hop duo with jazz-like qualities from Los Angeles in the state of California, in the United States. The band is composed of Shana Halligan, who provides vocals and lyrics and composes the songs, and Kiran Shahani, who produces and composes the songs.
Appearances
They have been listed on the Top 10 on the iTunes Store electronic chart and have been placed on radio station KCRW's Top 5 Most Requested CD for the week of March 20, 2006. Additionally, they have been featured on the soundtrack of The Devil Wears Prada, in Episode 2 ("I Am a Tree") of Season 3 of Grey's Anatomy, in Episode 7 ("The Ringer") of Season 1 of Moonlight, in Episode 1 ("Pilot") of Lipstick Jungle, in Episode 17 ("Sleeper") of Season 7 of Smallville, in Episode 13 ("Betrayed") of Season 7 of Law and Order: Criminal Intent, the advertisements for Samantha Who? and Victoria's Secret (featuring the track "Dirty Laundry"), in the movies Because I Said So and Shoot 'Em Up, in a Zune advertisement (and the device itself), and also placed on MSN's list for "Ones to Watch". The song "Dirty Laundry" also appears on a commercial for the show "Greek" in the United Arab Emirates.
The film is based on Coward's stage operetta, which was a hit in 1929 in London. It was filmed twice, first in 1933 in black-and-white (in Britain, with Anna Neagle and Fernand Gravet in the leading roles). The 1940 film is much cut and rewritten, removing much of the operetta's irony. The opening and closing scenes are cut, focusing the film squarely upon the relationship between MacDonald's character, Sarah, and her music teacher, Carl Linden. The opening scene was a flash forward, in which Sarah appears as an elderly woman recalling how she fell in love. One reason for dropping this scene is that it had been appropriated for MGM's 1937 film Maytime. Coward disliked the 1940 film and vowed that no more of his shows would be filmed in Hollywood. In 1951 he told The Daily Express, "I was saving up Bitter Sweet as an investment for my old age. After MGM's dreadful film I can never revive it" on stage.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, the French, British and American nations built and occupied a number of forts at Vincennes, Indiana. These outposts commanded a strategic position on the Wabash River.
Original Trading Post
The first trading post on the Wabash River was established by the Sieur Juchereau, Lieutenant General of Montreal. He, with 34 Canadians, founded the company post 28 October 1702 for the purpose of trading buffalo hides. The post was evidently a success; in the first three years, they collected over 13,000 buffalo hides. When Juchereau died, the post was abandoned, and the settlers left what they considered hostile territory for Mobile, the capital of Louisiana. The exact location of Juchereau's trading post is not known, but because of the crossing of the Buffalo Trace across the Wabash at Vincennes, it is thought by some to have been at or near the modern city of Vincennes. Some other historians place the post 50 miles further south.

The secure facility is made of granite, concrete, and steel. No president has even been inside the Fort Knox vault since Franklin Delano Roosevelt. No single person knows the entire combination to the gold vault. The door weighs 22 tons and is impervious to machine gun fire, flamethrowers, and explosives. Each piece of the combination must be entered by a separate official. The fortress is surveilled at all times by the United States Mint Police, and all the guards who work at the fortress are highly-skilled and heavily armed. Every hallway inside Fort Knox is covered in motion detectors, video cameras, and hidden microphones. Sneaking around inside is absolutely out of the question. The gold that is deposited in the vault is transported in highly secure trucks and counted and authenticated before being put inside. It cost approximately $560,000 to build Fort Knox in 1936. That’s about $9.3 million when adjusted for inflation. Here’s a secret look inside of Fort Knox.

The iconic James Bond movie Goldfinger included scenes of gold stored in Fort Knox's United States Bullion Depository. Although the movie crew did shoot in the area, they didn't gain access to the actual depository, which remains super secret and protected with ultra-high security.
Why does the United States have a gold vault? During the Great Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt ordered gold out of circulation, and private citizens had to sell their gold to the U.S. government. A new depository was needed—preferably away East Coast cities thought to be vulnerable to attack.
The Fort Knox depository opened in 1937. Besides gold, the depository has also stored priceless documents like the Declaration of Independence and even the Magna Carta. Not all of the U.S. gold is stored here; gold is also stored at the mints in Philadelphia and Denver, at the West Point Bullion Depository, and at the San Francisco Assay Office.
The two-story building here is constructed of granite, steel, and concrete. The vault inside is made of steel and encased in concrete; the door to the vault weighs more than 20 tons.
Fort Knox historian Paul Urbahns and former vault employee Doug Simmons share captivating inside stories about the depository's history and significance.

Inside the Most Secure Building In The World. Fort Knox is renowned for housing approximately 1407.3 million ounces of the United States' gold supply, making it widely considered one of the most secure buildings globally. Its origins trace back to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's era in the early 1930s amid the Great Depression. Roosevelt aimed to stabilize the economy and bolster reserves by issuing Executive Order 6102, which required citizens to exchange gold for paper currency, boosting the US reserves significantly.
In 1935, Roosevelt and the United States Treasury Department decided to establish a new depository for the gold reserves in Kentucky, specifically at Fort Knox, known for its military history and strategic location. The decision stemmed from concerns about safeguarding the gold during potential attacks, considering Kentucky's landlocked and geographically isolated position, which made it less vulnerable compared to coastal areas.
Construction of the United States Bullion Depository, commenced in early 1936 and was completed later that year. The building's security features include reinforced materials, a vault gate resistant to torches and drills, and a 100-hour time lock mechanism accessible only to authorized personnel with specific combinations.
The responsibility of protecting the gold falls under the Department of Treasury and the US Mint Police, ensuring stringent security measures to safeguard assets valued at over $300 billion. Besides gold, Fort Knox has housed various valuable items, including historical documents like the Magna Carta, the Holy Crown of Hungary, and even a year's supply of morphine and opium during the Cold War era.
While Fort Knox is renowned for its security, the title of the largest gold depository in the United States belongs to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, housing approximately 7,000 tons of gold, primarily sourced during and after World War II from various countries seeking secure storage. Despite a gradual decline in gold holdings since its peak in 1973, Fort Knox remains a symbol of economic strength and security, upholding its legacy as a pivotal asset repository in US history.

Fort Knox is so heavily guarded that it’s impossible to break into the gold depository. No one has even tried to steal the gold stored in the depository's impenetrable vault. The facility is surrounded by three fences and numerous security features. The grounds surrounding the fortress are protected by machine gun towers, land mines, motions detectors, and searchlights. Even making it to the front door without proper credentials is impossible. Fort Knox houses $291 billion worth of gold, and the facility has even housed priceless artifacts like the Magna Carta and Declaration of Independence.
