Saint Ignatius College Prep is a private, coeducationalJesuithigh school located in the Near West Side neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The school was founded in Chicago in 1869 by Fr. Arnold Damen, S.J., a Belgian missionary to the United States. The school is coeducational, Catholic, college preparatory, and sponsored by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). The school enjoys a strong academic reputation within a faith-supportive school community.
Overview
The school's main building was designed by the Canadian architect Toussaint Menard in the Second Empire architecture style. It is one of the five extant, public buildings in Chicago that predate the Great Fire of 1871. Its construction was begun in 1869, a fact commemorated on the school's façade. The main edifice is on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a Chicago Landmark on March 1987. The 19 acre (77,000 m²) campus is located on Chicago's Near West Side, adjacent to the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago.
A university-preparatory school or college-preparatory school (also known as tertiary preparation and usually abbreviated to preparatory school, college prep school, tertiary prep, or prep school) is a secondary school, either public or private, primarily designed to prepare students for a college or university education.
In the United States, college prep schools are usually private (independent and fee-paying) schools that focus on providing a rigorous academic education, athletic involvement, and varied extracurricular activities and leadership opportunities, on the secondary school (9th-12th-grade) level. Only 1% of U.S. students attend college prep schools. However, in many U.S. cities, there are competitive, state-funded secondary schools, to which admission is gained by examination and/or academic performance, and that offer high quality college/university preparatory educations. Many public secondary schools are considered "preparatory" due to various and specialized programs that prepare their students for college admissions and coursework.
Several Jesuit fathers have laboured long at St. Ignatius and are part of its history. Father Gregory Xavier Croft, S.J., spent his Jesuit life developing science education here and throughout Zimbabwe. He co-authored Science for Zimbabwe, one of the first science textbooks written after independence in 1980. He retired in 1991 and continued with his passion for physics at St Alberts in Mt Darwin, then moving on to St Boniface in Magunje. He died peacefully in Garnet House Harare in 2000.
Father Anthony Watsham, S.J., was a biologist, becoming a world authority in entomology. He spent much of his free time in the company of animals, dogs, birds, and even a baboon named 'Bibiana' at one time. A painter of great imagination, he decorated the Jesuit house at St. Ignatius with abstract art. One of his greatest academic achievements was to study and document the parasitic wasps that live inside figs. He was awarded an honorary life membership of the Entomological Society of Southern Africa.
The University of San Francisco (USF) is a Jesuit Catholic university located in San Francisco, California, United States. The school's main campus is located on a 55-acre (22ha) setting between the Golden Gate Bridge and Golden Gate Park. The main campus is nicknamed "The Hilltop", and part of the main campus is located on Lone Mountain, one of San Francisco's major hills. In addition, the university offers classes at four northern California branch campuses (Sacramento, San Jose, Santa Rosa, and Pleasanton), at a southern California branch campus, and at locations in downtown San Francisco, including the Folger Building at 101 Howard Street, and at the Presidio. Its close historical ties with the City and County of San Francisco are reflected in the University's traditional motto, Pro Urbe et Universitate (For the City and University). USF's Jesuit Catholic identity is rooted in the vision and work of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order.
Did Louisiana School Fake Records for Students Accepted to Top Colleges?
T.M. Landry College Preparatory School has been praised for sending 100 percent of its graduates to college. But some say the Louisiana school famous for sending black students to elite colleges falsified records and overstated applicants' accomplishments, according to the New York Times. The prep school, run by Michael Landry, a teacher and former salesman, and his wife, claims it supplied a steady stream of successful applicants to elite schools hungry for diversity. #InsideEdition
