Saint Christopher (Greek:Ἅγιος Χριστόφορος, Ágios Christóforos) is venerated by several Christian denominations as a martyr killed in the reign of the 3rd-century Roman Emperor Decius (reigned 249–251) or alternatively under the Roman Emperor Maximinus II Dacian (reigned 308–313). There appears to be confusion due to the similarity in names "Decius" and "Dacian". However his veneration only appears late in Christian tradition, and did not become widespread in the Western Church until the Late Middle Ages, although churches and monasteries were named after him by the 7th century.
That Christopher's name, meaning "Christ-bearer", foretells his adult life may give a clue that his story lacks a precise historical origin. He may be the same figure as Saint Menas. His most famous legend, which is mainly known from the West and may draw from Ancient Greek mythology, tells that he carried a child, who was unknown to him, across a river before the child revealed himself as Christ. Therefore, he is the patron saint of travelers, and small images of him are often worn around the neck, on a bracelet, carried in a pocket, or placed in vehicles by Christians.
Saint Christopher is a lost painting by Jan van Eyck, known today mainly through a c 1460-70 copy on oil on oak panel by an unknown follower now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and a c 1480 drawing in the Musee du Louvre from around 1480. Each show a giant, bearded man, wading through water with a large stick, carrying the infant Christ on his shoulders. The implication is that St. Christopher, patron saint of travelers, carries the weight of the world on his back; The works show him leaning on a large stick as Christ holds a globe, with arms raised in blessing, his robe billowing to the right. The pair are set in a highly detailed, richly coloured and atmospheric landscape. There are jagged rocks on either side, set against an early evening sky, with star formations.
The painting was hugely influential and widely copied. It is directly referenced in a wing of Dieric Bouts Munich Adoration of the Maji, and Hans Memling's Moreel Triptych.
The Philadelphia copy, through dendrochronological analysis, is placed as around 1460, and probably closely follows the colourisation of the original. However it omits a lot of detail found in the drawing, which is considered superior.
Saint Kitts, also known more formally as Saint Christopher Island, is an island in the West Indies. The west side of the island borders the Caribbean Sea, and the eastern coast faces the Atlantic Ocean. Saint Kitts and the neighbouring island of Nevis constitute one country: the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
The island is one of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. It is situated about 2,100km (1,300mi) southeast of Miami, Florida. The land area of St. Kitts is about 168km2 (65sqmi), being approximately 29km (18mi) long and on average about 8km (5.0mi) across.
Saint Kitts has a population of around 45,000, the majority of whom are mainly of African descent. The primary language is English, with a literacy rate of approximately 98%. Residents call themselves Kittitians.

Saint Christopher is one of the most popular, yet most enigmatic Catholic figures. He is considered a saint, although he is not in the official canon of the saints. He is listed as a martyr, possibly named Reprobus, who died under the Roman Emperor Decius, in 251 AD. Most Catholics refer to him as Saint Christopher anyway, and his medals and devotions are among the most common in Catholicism.
Other than his listing as a martyr, there are no primary sources referring to St. Christopher, only legends.
According to legend, St. Christopher was extremely tall, and by some accounts he was even a giant! He is referred to as a Canaanite. We think this is unlikely, but he was surely a man of significant physical stature.

Christopher decided one day that he wanted to serve the greatest king he could. He presented himself before his local ruler and entered service, until he noticed the king cross himself at the mention of the devil, revealing that the king believed the Devil to have more power.
St. Christopher then decided to serve the Devil. During his search, he encountered a band of thieves, whose leader referred to himself as the Devil. But when this leader avoided a Christian cross out of fear, St. Christopher learned there was someone even more powerful than the Devil.
St. Christopher found a hermit who taught him all about Christ, the King of Kings. The hermit suggested that he spend his life in prayer and fasting, a thing which St. Christopher, a large and probably often hungry man found difficult, he objected. The hermit suggested he then find something else that would please Christ. St. Christopher offered to work at a nearby river, and help travelers across. The fording was dangerous and many with less strength people had drowned. The hermit advised St. Christopher this would please Christ.
One day, a child approached St. Christopher by the river and asked to be helped across. St. Christopher obliged. However, as he entered midstream, the river rose and the child's weight grew and became extremely heavy. It was only by great exertion that St. Christopher safely delivered the child to the other side.
When St. Christopher asked the child why he was so heavy, the child explained that He was the Christ and when St. Christopher carried Him, he also carried the weight of the whole world on his shoulders. The child then vanished.
Other legends state that St. Christopher traveled after this experience and evangelized thousands of people. Arriving in Lycia in Asia Minor, and witnessing to Christians there who were being martyred. At that time, St. Christopher was detained and ordered to offer a sacrifice to the emperor. When he refused, it was decided to attempt to persuade him with money and women. Two women were sent to seduce him, but instead he converted them to Christianity.
After this, it was decided to have him killed, but various attempts to assassinate him failed. Eventually, he was arrested and beheaded.
The name "Christopher" means Christ-bearer, and may allude to the legend of the man carrying the Christ Child across the river. Saint Christopher also did not become popularized in the Church until the 7th century, about three centuries after his supposed death. We know of his popularity because around the 7th century, churches and monasteries began to be named after him. This adds credibility to the supposition that St. Christopher was merely a legendary figure and not a real person.
There is also speculation that St. Christopher could have also been confused with St. Menas, an Egyptian saint. Both Christopher and Menas are referred to as "Christ bearers" and are patrons of travelers.
St. Christopher is the patron saint of travelers and of children. His feast day is July 25. Because he is not officially recognized by the Church, he has no date of beatification or canonization. Despite these technicalities, it is widely thought that he was real and that he continues to intercede on behalf of Christians, especially children, today.

Dark has many artifacts that travel through time with the characters. In season 3 we learned the origin of the silver pendant inscribed with the patron saint of travelers, St. Christopher. The pendant has been the sign of the connection between Jonas and Martha in the Netflix original series. This connection crosses time, alternated worlds, and different versions of the characters. This Dark video follows the St. Christopher medallion’s path through the story chronologically from when it was first introduced into the timeline, until the story comes to an end.
The pendant changes hands many times, but it always holds special meaning for Jonas Kahnwald (Louis Hofmann) and Martha Nielsen (Lisa Vicari). The Martha he fell in love is killed in his world, but he learns there is another world that is entangled with it. The alternate world Martha plays a role similar to Jonas’s and there she falls in love with him, but he’s also killed. In both cases the St. Christopher pendant becomes a memento of their time together.
Dark season 3 introduced the idea of quantum entanglement, and split realities that can exist simultaneously. This means the path of the pendant is very complicated, and that there is more than one at the end of the story. After tracking the path of each of these we found that writers had done something completely remarkable, and fitting for the story. This is one the coolest easter eggs that exists in the show.

The third season of Dark was more complicated than its previous installments. With two worlds, more characters, and time periods that stretch farther than the ones we’ve already seen. The concept of quantum entanglement was introduced with multiple realities existing alongside each other. This Dark video explains the ending of the story and what it means for each of the characters.

This Dark “St. Christopher pendant’s path through time” video covers all 3 seasons of the show, and all 8 episodes of the final season. We explain what happened to Jonas and Martha’s silver pendant, and explain the mysteries that surround this medallion. The origin world is the only one left at the end, and we discuss what that means about characters we knew for the old world.
Dark season 3 is one of the best for this Netflix series. The showrunners gave the series the ending that they had envisioned, and we think that Dark fans will enjoy it.
In the third and final season, DARK reaches its mind-bending conclusion, moving beyond the concept of space and time. Upon arrival in a new world, Jonas tries to make sense of what this rendition of Winden means for his own fate, while the ones left behind in the other world are left on a quest to break the loop that now not only bends time but also space. Two worlds. Light and dark. And in the center a tragic love story of epic proportions.
What Dark theories are you thinking about as we head into season 3? How would you like to see the series end? Are you excited about the new shows Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese are making on Netflix after Dark is finished?

Saint Christopher is one of the enigmatic Catholic figures. He is considered a saint, although he is not in the official canon of the saints. We aren’t even certain of his name, and there several theories surrounding his true identity. He could have been a martyr named Reprobus who was martyred in 251 AD, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Decius. Or he could simply be St. Menas or another saint who was confused in the years following their death.
His name isn’t really a name, it’s a title. Christopher, means “Christ bearer” and is likely an honorary title given by Christians after the death of the actual man.
Despite the uncertainty, St. Christopher remains a popular saint.
According to legend, the man who would be known as St. Christopher was a Canaanite and he was exceptionally large and strong. One day, St. Christopher decided he wanted to serve the most powerful person he could find. He presented himself to a local king and asked to serve, a wish that was swiftly granted. Then, one day, St. Christopher saw the king cross himself against the mention of the Devil. This suggested to St. Christopher that the devil was more powerful than the king he served, so St. Christopher left the king in search of the Devil, whom he could serve instead.
On his journey, St. Christopher encountered a band of thieves and criminals and their leader who called himself the devil. Christopher then worked for this man until he saw him change his path to avoid a Christian shrine. The criminal explained that Christ was even more powerful than he.
Once again, St. Christopher set off in search of Christ. During his quest, he encountered a Christian hermit who taught him about Christ and the fact that Jesus was the King of all kings. St. Christopher asked how he could serve Christ and the hermit suggested a contemplative life of prayer and fasting. However, this did not suit St. Christopher who was a large man and often hungry.
As an alternative, St. Christopher suggested he work at a nearby river fording where many people had drowned because the of current. Being strong, he could help them to get safely across. The hermit encouraged this, and Christopher went to work.
One day, a child asked to be helped across the river. As St. Christopher approached the mid-stream, the river became swift and violent and the weight of the child increased until it felt like he was carrying the heaviest burden in his life.
Once safely across, St. Christopher asked the child why he was so heavy. The child replied, I am Christ, and when you carried me, you also carried the weight of the world on your shoulders.” The child vanished.
From that moment on, St. Christopher became an evangelizer.
He eventually came to the town of Lycia in Asia Minor and he spent his time ministering to Christians who were being martyred there. The local authorities, seeing his popularity first tried to bribe and tempt him away from aiding Christians. When that failed, they arrested him and ordered him to make a sacrifice to the Emperor, which he refused. They condemned him to death, but had difficulty executing him. St. Christopher was finally martyred when they managed to behead him.
Around the 7th century, the legend of St. Christopher became popular and many churches and monasteries were consecrated to him. He is considered the patron saint of travelers and children. Although an unofficial saint, his feast day is on July 25. Many Catholic continue to venerate and ask for the protection of St. Christopher today.

Learn the story of Saint Christopher in this episode! Saint Christopher is considered to be the patron saint for travellers. The story of Christopher is a very interesting one. Even as a child, he was big, strong and fearless. He always sought power and respect. He was even willing to work with the devil as Christopher thought the Devil was more powerful than anyone in this world. But he quickly realized that God is more powerful than anyone. Watch the amazing story of this saint today!
Stories of Saints is a series of animated stories based on the life of Saints. Each episode details on the Birth, Life, Transformation, Miracles and many other details on the life of each Saint. Watch and get inspired!

The path of the St. Christopher pendant through time in Dark (Netflix). Dark season 3 revealed the pendant’s full path & it’s crazier than you think. Please subscribe! - http://bit.ly/PetePeppers

It’s a great resource for everything related to Dark.

Let us know what you think about the first Dark season 3 trailer in the comments, and let us know what questions you have about this Netflix Original.

According to the Traditional Catholic Calendar, the Feast to St Christopher is still kept on July 25th, alongside the Feast of St James the Greater. He is known as the patron saint of travelers (especially mariners), and to offer protection against sudden death.
