The metropolitan area experienced a growth of nearly 20% in the last decade. In the 2000 census, the Sacramento MSA had a population of 1,930,857 (though a July 1, 2009 estimate placed the population at 2,458,355).
It lies in the Central Valley and Sierra Nevada regions of California as well as a small region of Western Nevada. Greater Sacramento is anchored by Sacramento, the political center of California, the nation's most populous state with the largest number of representatives in the U.S. government, home of the California State Capitol and the secondary location of Supreme Court of California and was the original terminus for the First Transcontinental Railroad. Greater Sacramento also contains sites of natural beauty including Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America and numerous ski and nature resorts. It is also located in one of the world's most important agricultural areas. The region's eastern counties are located in Gold Country, site of the California Gold Rush.
A metropolitan area, sometimes referred to as a metropolitan area, metro area or just metro, is a region consisting of a densely populated urban core and its less-populated surrounding territories, sharing industry, infrastructure, and housing.
A metro area usually comprises multiple jurisdictions and municipalities: neighborhoods, townships, cities, exurbs, suburbs, counties, districts, states, and even nations like the eurodistricts. As social, economic and political institutions have changed, metropolitan areas have become key economic and political regions. Metropolitan areas include one or more urban areas, as well as satellite cities, towns and intervening rural areas that are socio-economically tied to the urban core, typically measured by commuting patterns.
For urban centres outside metropolitan areas, that generate a similar attraction at smaller scale for their region, the concept of the regiopolis and respectively regiopolitan area or regio was introduced by German professors in 2006.
The metropolitan area (Portuguese:área metropolitana) is a type of administrative division in Portugal. Since the 2013 local government reform, there are two metropolitan areas: Lisbon and Porto. The metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto were created in 1991. A law passed in 2003 supported the creation of more metropolitan areas, under the conditions that they consisted of at least nine municipalities (concelhos) and had at least 350,000 inhabitants. Several metropolitan areas were created under this law (Algarve, Aveiro, Coimbra, Minho and Viseu), but a law passed in 2008 abolished these, converting them into intermunicipal communities, whose territories are (roughly) based on the NUTS III statistical regions.
The branches of administration of the metropolitan area are the metropolitan council, the metropolitan executive committee and the strategic board for metropolitan development. The metropolitan council is composed of the presidents of the municipal chambers of the municipalities.
An aire urbaine (literal and official translation: "urban area") is an INSEE (France's national statistics bureau) statistical concept describing a core of urban development and the extent of its commuter activity. When applied to larger agglomerations, this unit becomes similar to a U.S. metropolitan area, and the INSEE sometimes uses the term aire métropolitaine to refer to France's larger aires urbaines.
Composition
The aire urbaine is based on France's nationwide map of interlocking administrative commune municipalities: when a commune has over 2000 inhabitants and contains a centre of dense construction (buildings spaced no more than 200 metres apart), it is combined with other adjoining communes fulfilling the same criteria to become a single unité urbaine ("urban unit" ); if an urban unit offers over 10,000 jobs and its economical development is enough to draw more than 40% of the population of a nearby municipalities (and other municipalities drawn to these in the same way) as commuters, it becomes a pôle urbain ("urban cluster") and the "commuter municipalities" become its couronne ("rim"), but this only on the condition that the urban unit itself is not part of another urban cluster's rim. The aire urbaine is an urban cluster and its rim combined, or a statistical area describing a central urban core and its economic influence on surrounding municipalities.

Report: Sacramento among least affordable metro cities in U.S.
Sacramento is now the 11th least affordable place to live across all large metropolitan areas in the country. That's according to a new housing report. Construction for new housing is ongoing, but so is the increase in cost of living. The report by Porch, which offers services for homeowners and housing professionals, found that Sacramento residents are paying more for housing and goods in comparison to most other cities in the U.S. Rich Gibbens, a realtor at Keller Williams Realty, Inc. in Natomas, explained that with low-interest rates and desirability for housing, housing prices won't be dropping soon.

COMMUNITY DEBRIEF VIDEO: MADISON AVENUE HOSTAGE & FIRE INCIDENT

Upon arrival, deputies contacted a woman outside of her residence who said she allowed her estranged boyfriend to visit the child they had in common; she did not initially tell deputies she had a restraining order against him. She and the father of her child had been consuming alcohol together when a verbal altercation between the two turned physically violent. The male subject retreated into a bedroom with their two-year-old son and a large knife which he held to the toddler's throat. Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation and build rapport with the male with the hope of getting him to release the child and come out of the room. He refused and instead began setting fire to the bedroom he was in with the child. Deputies requested the Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Detail (SED), Critical Incident Negotiation Team and Metro Fire to assist while they evacuated several adjacent apartments from the rapidly growing and spreading fire. Through a joint effort, first responders were finally able to reach and remove both the adult male and toddler from the fire.
The child was initially not breathing when he was extricated from the structure and the immediate area of the fire. After a short time, he began breathing again. Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Personnel then took over the care of the 2-year-old victim and transported him to the hospital that was best suited to treat his trauma and burns. He suffered injuries related smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide exposure in addition to burn wounds. He was discharged from the hospital on July 11, 2022 and has been placed with a foster family that is facilitating his rehabilitation care regimen.
The adult male was initially unresponsive. After removal from the smoke, he became increasingly alert, and then combative. The suspect was transported to a local area hospital where he underwent extensive care to treat burns and damage caused by significant smoke inhalation. He was discharged from the hospital on July 13, 2022 and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail for charges related to this incident.
The material being released has been identified as significant to this incident and includes original 911 calls, in-car camera video, body cam video and private surveillance video. All videos being released have been minimally redacted to ensure the confidentiality and privacy of those involved. This is an active investigation. The information provided in this video release is preliminary and subject to change as investigators learn more. Sacramento is now the 11th least affordable place to live across all large metropolitan areas in the country. That's according to a new housing report. Construction for new housing is ongoing, but so is the increase in cost of living.

This year will be a home seller's market, with the Sacramento region leading the nation in percentage growth of sales, according to a housing forecast out Thursday from Realtor.com. Geoff Petrulis reports.
