The Hippos were an American rock band formed in 1995 in Los Angeles, California, and disbanded in 2002. During the band's lifetime they released 3 full-length albums. Their early work is best classified as part of the third wave of ska music, or as ska-punk, though in the later years of their career the band transitioned to a more pop rock sound utilizing synthesizers.
The Hippos formed in Los Angeles, California in 1995 with a lineup of Ariel Rechtshaid on vocals and guitar, James Bairian on bass, Louis Castle on trumpet, Rich Zahniser and Danny Rukasin on trombones, and Kyle Briggs on drums. This lineup would remain virtually unchanged throughout the band's career. They self-released a cassette demo entitled Attack of the Killer Cheese and began playing shows around southern California, establishing themselves amongst a prolific ska scene including bands such as Reel Big Fish, No Doubt, Buck-O-Nine, Dance Hall Crashers, Link 80, Save Ferris, and The Aquabats.
The Hippos is the third and final album by the Los Angeles, California rock band The Hippos, released in 2003 by Olympic Records and Fanscape Music. It was released posthumously after their breakup in 2000. The material for the album had been recorded in 2000 after the departure of original drummer Kyle Briggs, but even while working on it the other band members had begun to drift into other musical projects and eventually the album was shelved and the group disbanded. However, due to numerous requests from fans in the years immediately following the material was resurrected and released independently, mostly at the behest of lead singer Ariel Rechtshaid. It was promoted as "the album they wanted their fans to hear" and its cover art includes the message "Suonava tra: Marzo del 1996 e Settembre del 2000. Grazie per tutto. Fine," which from Italian loosely translates to "Created music from March 1996 to September 2000. Thanks for everything. The end."
Musically the album completed the band's transition from traditional ska and ska-punk to synthpop, almost completely severing ties to the southern California ska scene from which they had spawned. It relies heavily on the use of synthesizers and keyboards as opposed to the horn-structured arrangements of their early releases. To illustrate this the album's cover shows several analog synthesizers including the Korg VC-10 Vocoder and ARP 2600 Semi-modular Synthesizer.
Runaway or Run Away may refer to:
"Runaway" sung by Sahlene was the Eurovision 2002 entrant for that year's host nation, Estonia.
The song is an upbeat number with English lyrics which advise the narrator's "babe" to be more open minded in his life's vision: "just runaway to the stars/ I'll be waiting above". The resemblance of the melody of "Runaway" to that of "I Believe I Can Fly" was much noted: Alar Kotkas, co-writer of "Runaway", stated: "I know the two songs are similar" but denied any plagiarism.
The studio recording of "Runaway" was produced by Erik Bernholm: the background vocals were performed by Sahlene with one of her Eurovision backing vocalists Lena Olsson-Björkén. "Runaway" was Sahlene's only release on Virgin Records: the track made its album debut on her 2003 album release It's Been a While (M&L Records).
The song's composers Pearu Paulus, Ilmar Laisaar and Alar Kotkas (music) and Jana Hallas (lyrics), had previously written "Once In A Lifetime" the Estonian entrant for Eurovision 2000 performed by Ines and Ines was at first set to perform the song. However Ines withdrew shortly before Eurolaul 2002 - the Estonian preselection Eurovision round - and the song's composers, after unsuccessfully shopping their song to a number of Estonian singers including Koit Toome - contacted the Swedish division of Virgin Records who suggested Sahlene who was on the Virgin roster: on the evening of the same day Sahlene received a telephone call from Virgin Records and resultantly flew out to the Estonian capital of Tallinn at 6 a.m. the following morning. Sahlene had two weeks to work with the song's composers prior to performing "Runaway" in Eurolaul.

By 1996 the band had attracted the attention of Fueled by Ramen Records and entered the studio to record their first album, Forget the World. Jointly released the following year through Fueled by Ramen and Vagrant Records, the album was essentially a traditional ska punk effort focusing on upbeat tempos and heavy brass instrumentation. It afforded the band their first national tours at a time when ska and punk rock were gaining national attention. The band toured on and off in support of Forget the World for over a year.

Why must you pick on me? Have you no sympathy? I'm just trying to get to school. I lack popularity, no friends to ride with me. So I'm alone in the car pool (lane). When I saw those flashing lights, when I heard you read my rights, I knew this wasn't gonna be my day...So, Officer please don't ticket me, my violation doesn't deserve a citation. Please, I won't bother you so don't bother me. ";Sorry son but that's what I've got to do."; I'm tired of these stupid rules. I've got to waste my day at traffic school, and on top of that I've got to pay a fine. The CHP likes to pick on me. They've got no sympathy. They're nothing but fat red neck swine. (Chorus)
