The Royal Observatory, Greenwich (known as the Royal Greenwich Observatory or RGO when the working institution moved from Greenwich to Herstmonceux after World War II) is an observatory situated on a hill in Greenwich Park, overlooking the River Thames. It played a major role in the history of astronomy and navigation, and is best known as the location of the prime meridian.
The observatory was commissioned in 1675 by King Charles II, with the foundation stone being laid on 10 August. The site was chosen by Sir Christopher Wren. At that time the king also created the position of Astronomer Royal, to serve as the director of the observatory and to "apply himself with the most exact care and diligence to the rectifying of the tables of the motions of the heavens, and the places of the fixed stars, so as to find out the so much desired longitude of places for the perfecting of the art of navigation." He appointed John Flamsteed as the first AR. The building was completed in the summer of 1676. The building was often called "Flamsteed House", in reference to its first occupant.
Greenwich (i/ˈɡrɛnɪtʃ/, /ˈɡrɪnɪdʒ/, /ˈɡrɪnɪtʃ/ or /ˈɡrɛnɪdʒ/) is an early-established district of today's London, England, centred 5.5 miles (8.9km) east south-east of Charing Cross. The town lends its name to the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
Greenwich is generally described as being part of South-east London and sometimes as being part of East London. It is also one of the five boroughs of the London Docklands, connected to areas with docks of London historically by river and today to Canary Wharf and other buildings by the East London Line.
Greenwich is 28.1 miles from Grand Central Terminal and the average travel time from Grand Central is 57 minutes (though expresses run as fast as 38 minutes).
As of August 2006, weekday commuter ridership was 2,804, and there are 1,274 parking spots (none owned by the state, unlike most other railroad stations in Connecticut).
History
The Penn Central Transportation Company opened the current station building on March 5, 1970, replacing an older structure which was demolished. As built the new building was a two-story structure with 8,550-square-foot (794m2) of space. The station was the centerpiece of Greenwich Plaza, a new mixed-use retail development.
Greenwich/ˈɡrɛnᵻtʃ/ is a town in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States. In 2006 Greenwich ranked #1 in the "Biggest Earner" category. As of the 2010 census, the town had a total population of 61,171. As of a census done by the Census Bureau on July 1, 2012, the town had a population of 62,256. It is home to many hedge funds and other financial service companies. Greenwich is the southernmost and westernmost municipality in Connecticut and New England. It is 38+ minutes by train (express) from Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The largest town on Connecticut's Gold Coast, CNN/Money and Money magazine ranked Greenwich first on its list of the "100 Best Places to Live in the United States" in 2005. The town is named after Greenwich, a borough of London in the United Kingdom.
History
The town of Greenwich was settled in 1640. One of the founders was Elizabeth Fones Winthrop, daughter-in-law of John Winthrop, founder and Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. What is now called Greenwich Point was known for much of the area's early history as "Elizabeth's Neck" in recognition of Elizabeth Fones and their 1640 purchase of the Point and much of the area now known as Old Greenwich. Greenwich was declared a township by the General Assembly in Hartford on May 11, 1665.

Why is Greenwich Home to the Royal Observatory?
Greenwich in south-east London has long been famous for its connections with time and longitude... and at the centre of this important role is the beautiful Greenwich Royal Observatory.
In this video, the wonderful people from the Royal Museums Greenwich Collection were kind enough to invite me to the Observatory for an after-hours look around- which means in this video, we'll pretty much have this historic site all to ourselves!
As we go around, I'll be explaining why the Royal Observatory came to be based in Greenwich, and how it sealed its position as the planet's prime time keeper, along with showing you some of its most beautiful treasures... including the Sir Christopher Wren designed 'Octagon Room' and John Harrison's revolutionary Chronometers, which are amongst the most stunning...

The Road Through Britain: The Royal Observatory Of Greenwich
Sadly, every journey must come to an end, and ours was no exception. After spending 12 days on the road, covering more than 1,000 miles across Great Britain, including quite a few parked in a ferry across the Irish Sea, the finishing line was in our sights, and lucky for us, it was conveniently marked on the ground. The Greenwich Meridian would signal the end of an epic road trip. For the full story, go to https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/episode-5-the-royal-observatory-of-greenwich

The Greenwich Meridian's Forgotten Rival
If you've ever been to the Louvre, you may have stumbled across a small disc bearing the word "Arago" and the letters "N" and "S" - or in other words, the exact location of the old Paris Meridian. But what's the story there? How close did Paris ever get to becoming THE meridian? And why did we end up with Greenwich instead? I decided to investigate...

London History Walking Tour - Royal Greenwich
One of my favourite day trips in London is to Royal Greenwich - where east meets west and Old historical Royalty meets new modern art and innovation. Greenwich has been at the centre of the world for hundreds of years and you won't want to miss all these lovely places to see.
First there’s the peninsula where you can see modern art by Anthony Gormley, Alex Chinnek and more, stretching all along The Line as far as the Olympic park.
Take a trip up the River Thames to the place where Admiral Lord Nelson’s body was taken after the Battle of Trafalgar, Les Miserables was filmed and the first observatory in England was built by Sir Christopher Wren.
Climb the O2 centre for spectacular views of London or see a global sporting event or music concert inside the dome.
Take an Emirates cable car...
