"Riding Through the Past:" New Metrobus Tours on the DC Historic Sites App
Led by DC Preservation League this presentation explores "Riding Through the Past"– a series of new bus tours on the DC Historic Sites mobile app and website: https://historicsites.dcpreservation.org/
In 1976, Don’t Tear It Down (DTID) published a series of brochures on various public bus routes across the nation’s capital, titled “Take One Tour.” They aimed to make riders aware of the historic sites along their bus route. Today, the DC Preservation League continues its predecessor’s work with a series of digital tours offered on the organization’s mobile app. These tours take inspiration from “Take One Tour” and encourage present-day Washingtonians to explore the history of DC’s built environment on their everyday commute.

The recording of this presentation is being used for the National Council on Public History's 2021 Annual Meeting. DCPL Staff will be leading a live Q&A about Riding Through the Past for NCPH on March 26th at 12:30pm. Learn more about the conference: http://bit.ly/37ZIVjB

Iceland gems Hveravellir + Kerlingarfjöll | Highlands F-Road 35 Kjalvegur/Kjölur route)
There are two Highland routes that bisect Iceland - one is Sprengisandur (F26) and the other one is Kjalvegur aka Kjölur (F35). In this video we drive our Land Rover Defender on F35 which runs from Akureyri to Reykjavik. Along the way, we stop by Hveravellir geothermal area and the Kerlingarfjöll mountain range, known for incredible hiking and a true gem in the highlands. This area of Iceland can ONLY be accessed in the summer months (June-September) and requires a 4wd vehicle.

Road 35 (Kjalvegur / Kjölur route) & Hveravellir, Iceland | The famous former F-road (13.08.2021)
There are two ancient, long and famous Highland routes that go through the heart of the Iceland. One is Sprengisandur (F26) and then there is this one here - Kjalvegur (also known as the Kjölur route).
Comparing to F26, Kjalvegur has always been considered the more "friendly" and "softer" route. That is because there are no unbridged river crossings on Kjalvegur and there are much more huts and things to see on the road. Sprengisandur is a long lonely drive with just Nýidalur hut in the middle, but of course this isolated journey is an experience on its own.
Now back to Kjalvegur - it used to be an official F-road, but it isn't anymore. So there are still a lot of sources on the Internet calling it "F35" and even the road signs still say it's "F35", but actually it isn't. So yeah, it'...

Distracted driver ditched car on the Kjölur route, F35 in Iceland
On the 7th day of my trip I drove the famous Kjölur route, F35, all the way from its start near Gullfoss to Varmahlíð in the North. Early in the day I came across this ditched car. The person driving apparently took their eyes off the road, distracted by the beautiful scenery.
The person you see driving the car is not the person who ditched it, the car rental people brought a replacement vehicle and sent her on her way. They were not pleased with the situation and said it happens "all too often". Be safe out there.

Kjölur Route F35 Iceland
A drive in the beautiful highland of Iceland, on road F35 also called Kjölur route. The drive took approximately 6 hours including multiple stops along the way. One stop that is defiantly worth mentioning is the geothermal area called Hveravellir and it´s campsite. Here you can take a dip in the warm natural spring, or overlook the two beautiful glaciers in the horizon of the campsite. Rookie mistake not to include pictures.
Anyway! We are a young couple living in Iceland, and want to share the beauty of the country. Follow us for more videos around Iceland.

Riding Iceland's famous Kjalvegur Road (F35) on my Tenere 700 - is it really cursed? [S4-E5]
September 3nd 2022: It's time to ride Iceland from north to south on the famous Kjalvegur Road (F35). Some say this road is cursed and haunted, and considering how this day went, there might be something to it! Still, this was one of the best and most exciting days I had on Iceland - sun from beginning to end, exciting riding, stunning views and great company from Hjörtur Jónsson.

05:25 - Leaving the Kerlingarfjöll area
08:15 - Back on the Kjölur Route (F35), heading south
22:55 - Gullfoss/End of the Kjölur Route (F35)
24:40 - Geysir
33:45 - Þingvellir
41:00 - Back to Reykjavík
46:03 - Bonus: Day 11 - Heading to Keflavík Airport

Now back to Kjalvegur - it used to be an official F-road, but it isn't anymore. So there are still a lot of sources on the Internet calling it "F35" and even the road signs still say it's "F35", but actually it isn't. So yeah, it's an unpaved road, but it isn't very rough or doesn't have anything particularly difficult (like huge rocks, potholes or as mentioned above, unbridged rivers). A small portion in the South is actually already paved and there has been discussion in Icelandic media about paving the entire road. However, there is still no winter service and it is accessible only during the summer months, but usually this route is one of the first ones to open up in first half of June. Since it's being used a lot, it gets lots of corrugations and the middle section of it felt like driving on an actual washboard.
35 offers access to many smaller roads, but the main ones are F347 that leads to Kerlingarföll mountains and then 735 that leads to Hveravellir geothermal field. I will upload a separate video of F347 (& Kelingarfjöll) in the near future, but I included Hveravellir in this one, as it's only couple of km from Kjalvegur. As mentioned above, Hveravellir is a geothermal area that has natural hot springs and also some really hot and smoking puddles to check out. There is also accommodation and even a restaurant.
Sadly at the end of our drive on 35 we hit a pretty thick fog, so there isn't very much to see. Luckily we were lucky with the weather for the main part of the route.

05:25 - Leaving the Kerlingarfjöll area
08:15 - Back on the Kjölur Route (F35), heading south
22:55 - Gullfoss/End of the Kjölur Route (F35)

54:35 - Keflavík Airport
The footage is sped up 5x. The car was a Land Rover Defender.
While in Iceland I also used my DSLR camera to capture some of the beautiful and exotic landscapes. I edited the footage into a short landscape film called "Exploring Iceland", which you can watch here: https://youtu.be/Llwp88oh1Jk
You can find some pictures from the trip here: https://goo.gl/GNg4Qg
I would definitely recommend visiting Iceland at some point in your lifetime. It's one of the most beautiful and unusual places on the planet, and you will never regret it.
