Robert Morden (c.1650-1703) was an English bookseller, publisher, and maker of maps and globes.
He was among the first successful commercial map makers.
Between about 1675 and his death in 1703, he was based under the sign of the Atlas at premises in Cornhill and New Cheapside, London. His cartographical output was large and varied. His best-known maps are those of South Wales, North Wales and the English Counties first published in a new edition of Camden's "Britannia" in 1695, and subsequently reissued in 1722, 1753 and 1772. These maps were based on new information from gentlemen of each county, and were newly engraved. Each had a decorated cartouche, and showed numerous place names. Morden also produced in 1701 a series of smaller county maps often known as Miniature Mordens.
In 1695 he published a map of Scotland. It is in parts (e.g. Skye and the Western Isles) essentially a copy of the 1654 map done by Robert Gordon of Straloch, published by Joan Blaeu; other parts show evidence of more accurate cartography.
Morden is a district in the London Borough of Merton. It is located approximately 8 miles (13km)South-southwest of central London between Merton Park and Wimbledon (to the north), Mitcham (to the east), Sutton (to the south) and Worcester Park (to the west). Morden had a population of 48,233 in 2011 (which refers to the populations of the wards of Cannon Hill, Lower Morden, Merton Park, Ravensbury and St Helier).
Origin of name
Morden might get its name either from the British language words Mawr (great or large) and Dun (a fort), or possibly "The Town on the Moor".
History
Early history
Human activity in Morden dates back to the Iron_age period when Celtic tribes are known to have occupied areas around Wimbledon, but the first significant development in Morden was the construction of the Roman road called Stane Street from Chichester to London.
The route of Stane Street through Morden followed the current A24, London Road up Stonecot Hill from the south west crossing Morden Park to the west of the current dual carriageway road and passing through the pitch and putt golf course and the grounds of St Lawrence's Church. The road then descended the other side of the hill towards the town centre passing west of the Underground station and crossing the north corner of Morden Hall Park heading in the direction of Colliers Wood and Tooting. Small Romanartifacts, mainly coins and pottery, have been found at various locations within the area although there is no evidence of any settlement.
Morden is a fictional character in the universe of the science fiction television series Babylon 5, played by Ed Wasser. He is a recurring antagonist in the show.
Character description
Overview
Morden serves as the spokesman on behalf of the Shadows, an ancient and incredibly powerful alien race whom he refers to as his "associates." Although outwardly polite and gracious, he represents a dangerous hidden agenda. Any conversation is overheard by two or three cloaked Shadows, who accompany him at all times and work through him as seen both in the television series and in the novel: Babylon 5: The Passing of the Techno-Mages - Invoking Darkness. Indoctrinated by the Shadows after his capture during an expedition to Z'ha'dum, the Shadows' homeworld, he has accepted to serve because of the Shadows' manipulation of his guilt of the death of his wife and child and because they promise to save his family whom he believed were trapped in hyperspace. When pushed, Morden drops any pretense of friendliness, openly threatening anyone who presents any difficulty to his associates. He is arguably the face of the primary villains of the series during its first four seasons, as he often manipulates the series' other characters for the Shadows sinister purposes.

Bloodied, torn and twisted Severe mutilation is all that remains Stagnating in shrink-wrap Empty the contents onto the mortuary slab... The morbid, muted body Is dissected, lacerated and shred - Life is hard as a mortuary technician The fumes go straight to my head... The trunk now depleting gristle, with bactericidal decay This discissed disarticulation I bludgeon as I ablate... Diluted spittle, bile and gore Congealing puddles on the floor Grotesquely dismembered As the cavities I harshly sever... Stabbing at the trachea, chest with walls I puncture Slicing back flesh I tear, subject to malacia... Advanced rigor mortis, the corpse internally bruised Kaleidoscope livor mortis, the carcass a shade of livid blue Joints are stiffened, I now bend and crack The cerebrum pulped, with cranial collapse... Bodily embalmed and fluids tapped Maceration is oozing, as the insides I unwrap... Finished with the fragments, a mass of stinking waste Spread-eagled bloody mess, I hastily eviscerate... Advanced pyathrosis - let there be rot (fun in the morgue) Foul autodigestion - necrotic mutation... The gaping chest is crudely stitched up Internal organs are hastily replaced The carnage totally disfigured Another pathological waste... Flowing blood crusts The corpse is totally rotten to the core The miserable, festering stiff I dismember with my saw... The wounds are stitched, I shabbily try to repair Disintegrating with histolycis and everyday wear and tear... "Cadaveric dissolution, sliced, ripped and deceased Eructated gases are gurgling as they bleed Congested pus, blood and autodigested gore Tissue corrodes as aggression gnaws..." The mortuary table I now wipe, sponge and clean Washing away the remains of life, the slab now gleams... The evaporating reek of putrefaction gets right up my nose Carnage, chunks and leftover pieces in the bin I dispose... Advanced pyathrosis - let there be rot (fun in the morgue)
