The River Oaks Theatre was built in 1939. It is an example of late-1930s Art Deco design. It was the last of the deluxe neighborhood movie theaters built by Interstate Theatre Corporation.
The theater opened on November 28, 1939. Paul Scott had the lease to the theater. Its first film was Bachelor Mother. In February 1947 Interstate Theaters acquired the River Oaks Theatre. In late 1975 the chain Trans-Continental took control from Interstate. The New Mexico chain Movie, Inc. took control of the River Oaks Theatre in 1977. The theater's focus changed from first-run films to alternative films such as re-released films, and classic, foreign, cult, and old films. Movie, Inc. later merged with Landmark Theatre Company.
River Oaks is a residential community located in the center of Houston, Texas, United States. Located within the 610 Loop and between Downtown and Uptown, the community spans 1,100 acres (450ha). Established in the 1920s by brothers William and Michael Hogg, the community became a well-publicized national model for community planning. River Oaks is the wealthiest and most expensive community in Texas and among the top ten in the United States. Real estate values in the community range from $1 million to over $20 million. River Oaks was also named the most expensive neighborhood in Houston in 2013. The community is home to River Oaks Country Club, which includes a golf course designed by architect Donald Ross.
History
William and Michael Hogg, the sons of former Texas GovernorJim Hogg, and attorney Hugh Potter established River Oaks in the 1920s. Potter obtained an option to purchase 200 acres (81ha) around the River Oaks Country Club in 1923, and in the following year William Hogg established the Country Club Estates in order to support the development of the community. The two brothers promoted the sale of lots in the subdivision for $2,200 apiece in 1928. The brothers, along with sister Ima Hogg, oversaw the construction of Bayou Bend, a stately southern-style home on the banks of Buffalo Bayou.
The station is located in San Jose, California in the center median of 1st Street at River Oaks Parkway. The stop serves its immediate San Jose neighborhood, which includes VTA's administration office, as well as a nearby portion of Santa Clara opposite the Guadalupe River, accessible via a bicycle-pedestrian bridge. The bridge makes River Oaks one of VTA's few North San Jose light rail stops to serve a residential neighborhood, as North San Jose is almost entirely industrial.
The River Oaks theater locations in south suburban Calumet City were all closed by 2006... While Black residents embraced Lincoln Mall and River Oaks, others moved and took their dollars to the Orland Square Mall and other shopping destinations.
