The river was known to the Romans as the Itouna, as recorded by the Greek geographer Claudius Ptolemaeus (Ptolemy) in the 2nd century AD. This name derives from the Celtic word ituna, meaning water, or rushing.
It starts life as Red GillBeck, then becomes Hell Gill Beck, before turning north and joining with Ais Gill Beck to become the River Eden. (Hell Gill Force, just before it meets Ais Gill Beck, is the highest waterfall along its journey to the sea).
MYSTERIOUS Strange Carvings on The River Eden, Cumbria - Eden Valley
We took the GoPro down to kayak the River Eden in Cumbria and came across this strange carvings in the rock face along the banking...The full carving reads as follows:
"OH THE FISHERS CENTLE LIFE
HAPPIEST IS OF ANY
VOID OF PLEASUR FULL OF STRIFE
OTHER JOYS ARE BUT TOYS
AND TO BE LAMENTED
ONLY THIS A PLEASURE IS
TIMBER }{ FISHING"
Followed by the Greek Phrase " APIδTOS UEV UDIΛIP". Dated 1855. Very interesting! 🤔
After a bit more investigation we know that the there is an error in the carving itself. It should read Ariston, not APIδTOS. Men Udor, is a line from a Euripides play which is commonly found found on the inside of 19th century bath houses. The final line below is very confused and likely not part of the quote, perhaps the carvers's initials. Very interesting!

Canoe Trip down the River Eden in Cumbria | Exploring Lacys Caves
Join me and my friend Will as we head down the River Eden, Cumbria in open canoes.
For some reason we thought this was going to be about 3-4 hours from our research. We did stop a few times but it was more like 7 / 7.5 hours, so by the end we were exhausted.
With me thinking it was only 3 hours or so I hammered the GoPro in the first hour or so which meant the batteries had died for what unbeknownst to us was the better part of the river, rapids & scenery wise...absolutely stunning that last section to Armathwaite bridge! We caught the last part where we could on our phones, which was a bit of a shame but it is what it is...we will go back and next time save some battery.
Even though we checked the river levels all week and the day we went, in some parts of the river there was hardly an...

Even though we checked the river levels all week and the day we went, in some parts of the river there was hardly any water, we ran what rapids we felt comfortable running and lined a few that would be easily ran with some more water on.
We stopped for refreshments at the well known Lacy's Caves, a series of 5 chambers in the red sandstone cliff of River Eden, just north of Little Salkeld, and had a nosey around and sent the drone up too.
Amazing area of the country and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for somewhere to paddle.
Hope you enjoy the video, please give it a like & subcribe, it helps with the old youtube algorithm to get the channel found.
