Germany's Romantic Rhine and Rothenburg
Rick Steves' Europe © 2002 | Cruising the Rhine River, we dodge riverboat traffic and the legendary Lorelei. After climbing castles and descending into dungeons, we relax with Rhine wine. We tour Burg Eltz — a lived-in castle where the noble lady still puts out fresh flowers. Then we enter the walled town of Rothenburg for Germany's best wood carving, a vivid dose of medieval punishment, and a tour with the night watchman of the town's lamp-lit ramparts. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #germany

The Rhine: A river born in the Swiss Mountains | The Rhine from above - Episode 1/5
Watch the other episodes of the series: http://bit.ly/RhineFromAbove
High up in the Swiss mountains, fed by glacial ice and eternal snow, lies the source of Europe's busiest river: the Rine. Hundreds of meltwater streams unite and gush into the valley. Today, they're not many places left where it is permitted to flow freely. The mighty river rushes impetuously down to Lake Constance, straightened and tamed, but undefeated.

Is Rhine Falls worth visiting - Switzerland's most beautiful Rainfalls
Switzerland Rhine Falls is the most powerful waterfall in all of Europe and one of the most popular places to visit in Switzerland. This popular tourist attraction has over one million visitors each year, who all come to see not only the Rhine Falls in Switzerland but the stunning landscape and villages that surround the Rhine River. The Rhine River Falls is found on a stretch of the Rhine River known as the High Rhine. To stand high above Europe's largest waterfall, feeling the roar and vibration of the water over one's entire body - this can be experienced at the Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen. By ship one can reach castles, the Rhine Falls Basin and even the mighty rock in the midst of the waterfall.
Due to tectonic shifts in the Ice Age, the Rhine River was forced into a new riverbed over 15,000 years ago. The Rhine Falls came into being at the transition point where hard chalk turned into soft gravel. Over a breadth of 150 meters, several hundred cubic meters of water rush into the depths at the rate of 23 meters per second.
In the middle of it all stands a mighty rock that has withstood the elements for a thousand years. The rock can be reached...

Watch 'Wild Germany: The Mecklenburg Lake Plateau' here: https://youtu.be/yF1C35-wP6o
There is hardly any other river in Germany that is surrounded by as many myths and legends as the river Rhine. No other river has been the topic of songs, has been painted and travelled equally frequently.
Despite this it still seems to be true today what the French poet Victor Hugo once said about this river – the Rhine is a river everybody talks about, nobody explores, everybody visits but no one really knows. It is the second longest river in Central and Western Europe after the Danube. Medieval castles, important industrial sites and lush vineyards - this is what river Rhine is famous for.
This river however is much more than what man had made it. Even though m...

The Rhine has been shrouded in myth over the centuries: No other river in Europe has more stories to tell - full of desires and longings. From a bird's eye view the film dives into the canyons of the Rhine source and at the Rhine Falls small drops of water fly past the audience so that they consider themselves right in the middle of the cascades. Panoramic shots amaze the audience all the way from Switzerland to the Netherlands. The Rhine is also one of the busiest waterways worldwide: The contradiction between industry and the urge for re-naturalization is vivid in everyday life of many of the protagonists - from the archaeologist at Lake Constance to the shepherd living in the green Rhine delta near Rotterdam.

This is where the waters cascade down to a lower level, creating the picturesque Rhine Water Falls. The falls are just a single drop waterfall, however with a width of 150 metres and a height of 23 metres, its size is impressive. Visitors are blown away by the sheer power of the Rhine Falls, particularly during the summer, when the water flows at an impressive rate of 600,000 litres per second. During the winter the falls still flow at a rate of 250,000 litres per second.

The rock can be reached on a circular tour of the Rhine Falls, during which one can observe the natural spectacle from up close. Virtually in the middle of the waterfall, visitors stand on platforms that jut out and partially hover over the Rhine. The castles of Wörth and Laufen can be reached by river boat, and very daring visitors can rent canoes.
The Schloss Laufen complex has sported an added sparkle since March 2010. In addition to the new visitors' centre, a children's playground and the "Historama" (interactive exhibition about the Rhine Falls) have been opened. The new adventure trail with its dual lift system and the Belvedere Trail make for easy access to the magnificent Rhine Falls.

Wild River Rhine | Nature Documentary
Even though man has settled next to the river and the stream has been used as means of transportation for thousands of years, it's banks still host a stunning variety of wildlife habitats. Alluvial forests, roaring waterfalls, steep canyons and sunny slopes flank the river along its some 1230km. The variety of habitats is the reason for the large biodiversity along the stream.
The film follows the water against the stream. Starting at its delta in the Netherlands it runs through six countries until its place of origin in the Swiss Alps. This film about the Rhine is unique because of its focus on the Fauna and Flora that exists alongside the stream. Beavers and Seals, Capricorns and Lizards, Wild boar and White-throated dipper are among the animal stars of this film.
