Reza Shah Pahlavi (Persian:رضا شاه پهلوی; pronounced[reˈzɑː ˈʃɑːhe pæhlæˈviː]) (15 March 1878– 26 July 1944), was the Shah of Iran (Persia) from 15 December 1925 until he was forced to abdicate by the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran on 16 September 1941.
Four years after a British-assisted coup, the 1921 Persian coup d'état, in 1925 Rezā Shāh deposed Ahmad Shah Qajar, the last Shah of the Qajar dynasty, and founded the Pahlavi dynasty. He established a constitutional monarchy that lasted until overthrown in 1979 during the Iranian Revolution. Reza Shah introduced many social, economic, and political reforms during his reign, ultimately laying the foundation of the modern Iranian state.
His legacy remains controversial to this day: his defenders assert that he was an essential modernizing force for Iran (whose international prominence had sharply declined during Qajar rule), while his detractors assert that his reign was often despotic, with his failure to modernize Iran's large peasant population eventually sowing the seeds for the Iranian Revolution. Moreover, his insistence on ethnicnationalism and cultural unitarism along with forced detribalization and sedentarization resulted in suppression of several ethnic and social groups.

In 1975 for one of the first-ever episodes of the fifth estate, Adrienne Clarkson talked to Mohammad Reza Pahlavi -the Shah of Iran- about inflation in the West in the face of rising oil prices. The Shah contends that the West built itself at Iran’s expense and he is now putting things right. Clarkson raises the issues of Iran’s record with political prisoners and torture and his views on torture are unequivocal. The Pahlavi dynasty would end four years later in the wake of the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Pahlavi died of cancer while in exile one year later.

“The Rise of Reza Shah” - Part 11 of the Roqe Media series, The Contemporary History of Iran. How did a man named Reza Khan, who came from modest means, become the ‘father of modern Iran’ and the founder of a new Iranian dynasty? Acclaimed historian Dr. Shaul Bakhash, author of a new book on the life of Reza Shah, joins Jian Ghomeshi from George Mason University to discuss Reza Shah’s evolution from military strongman, to Prime Minister, to King of Iran from 1925-1941, his remarkable role in a fundamental progressive transformation and centralization of the Iranian state, as well as his autocratic nature and rule by iron will that would leave him deeply unpopular by his final year in power. This is the first section of two conversations with Dr. Bakhash that will be followed by Part 12 of the Contemporary History of Iran, “The Fall of Reza Shah.”
New episodes are released every Monday & Thursday. Hosted by Jian Ghomeshi.

The student’s actions that day were fueled by a rising resentment of a ruthless dictator, MohammedRezaShah Pahlavi, along with the growing influence of Islamic fundamentalists who, 40 years later, still hold control of the country.
Others expressed stronger emotions ... Under Iran's last shah, MohammadReza Pahlavi, Iran and the United States enjoyed close relations ... They demanded Washington hand over the recently toppled Shah, who was being treated in the United States for cancer.
But the rights focus came to a head on Iran when ShahMohammadReza Pahlavi a Western ally whose autocratic rule by decree brought economic and social modernization faced growing discontent ... the shah.
