Rembrandt's Self-Portrait with Two Circles comes alive!
Animated version of the face of Rembrandt's "Self-Portrait with Two Circles", painted about 1665-1669, normally located at Kenwood House, Hampstead, London. Created by running a picture I took myself in 2015 when the painting was on loan at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands, for the special exhibition "The Late Rembrandt" through MyHeritage's new "Deep Nostalgia" app. In the portrait, Rembrandt holds his palette, brushes, and maulstick. The painting is notable for its monumentality and the enigmatic background consisting of a shallow space with the fragments of two circles. Unlike other late self-portraits, in Self Portrait with Two Circles, Rembrandt, with one hand on his hip, appears confrontational and even defiant. The impression is that of a master solemnly asserting his genius....

The impression is that of a master solemnly asserting his genius.

Welcome to a truly unique opportunity to live in a beautiful, 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom house with a private garden and a historic link to one of the most famous painters ever lived, named Rembrandt van Rijn.
The property is directly available for rent and will be offered in a fully furnished condition.
The monthly rental price is excluding utilities which are approx. € 300,- per month.
Background and history:
The original building (named ‘De Blauwe Arent’), was built around 1612 and once owned by the ‘Six’ family. A Dutch aristocratic family that became wealthy through the silk and cloth industry. Their son, named Jan Six, has lived in the building up to around the year 1654 until he left to live on Herengracht 619 when it was completed.
Jan Six and Rembrandt became friends and Rembrandt has made a world famous etch of Jan Six in 1647 in front of the window of this very building. The etch is part of the Collection Six and is still owned by the family. It has been in several expositions and we have attached a picture of the etch to this advertisement.

As the title suggests, in this video I'm setting up a new plein air watercolour palette using all Rembrandt watercolours. If you're just here for the swatching, skip straight to 7.10 minutes! 😊
Note. This is a re-post of my previous swatching video of August 1, 2021. I’m re-uploading it because I’ve also re-posted my first four videos that were rather lacking in quality (understatement). They’re a little bit better now, and as I still like my video’s to be chronological, I’m re-doing this one as well. (Not trying to lure anyone into re-watching my videos, I promise!)
The paints used in this video are all Rembrandt watercolours by Royal Talens:
Cadmium yellow lemon - no. 207: PY35
Indian yellow - no. 244: PY154/P048
Cadmium red - no. 305: PR108
Permanent madder lake - no. 336: PR187
Burnt sienna - no. 411: PBr7
Yellow ochre - no. 227: PY43/PY42
Sepia modern - no. 416 - Old version: PBk7/PR101?
Olive green - no. 620: PG7/PY150/PV19
Sap green - no. 623: PY150/PG7
Phthalo green - no. 675: PG7
Ultramarine deep - no. 506: PB29
Prussian blue - no. 508: PB27
Mauve - no. 532: PV19/PB15
Neutral tint - no. 715: PBk6/PV19
Chinese White - no. 108: PW4
Also, see the Rembrandt watercolour page at the Royal Talens website: https://www.royaltalens.com/en/brands/rembrandt/rembrandt-watercolour/?productCode=0501P
The empty palette is a Heung Il watercolour painting aluminium one, with 26 mini wells. I bought this one on E-bay because I've long wanted to try a palette with slanted wells instead of my usual half pans. And I have a preference for metal palettes vs. plastic, as well.
The paper used for the swatching is Arches 300 gsm cold-pressed watercolour paper with a fine grain.
The brush is an old but excellent Talens brush, no longer being made, as far as I can tell. The new paints were all bought at Van der Linde on the Rozengracht in Amsterdam. Here's the link to their website: https://www.vanderlindewebshop.com/nl
If you're ever in Amsterdam, do visit!
Filming was done on a Samsung Galaxy S8+ and editing was done in iMovie on an iMac.
I've tried to get a good approximation of the actual colours, but they kept being picked up really strongly by the camera, so there was quite a lot of muting going on with the footage. I hope I still did the paints justice, though.
