A short story is a piece of prosefiction, which can be read in a single sitting. Emerging from earlier oral storytelling traditions in the 17th century, the short story has grown to encompass a body of work so diverse as to defy easy characterization. At its most prototypical the short story features a small cast of named characters, and focuses on a self-contained incident with the intent of evoking a "single effect" or mood. In doing so, short stories make use of plot, resonance, and other dynamic components to a far greater degree than is typical of an anecdote, yet to a far lesser degree than a novel. While the short story is largely distinct from the novel, authors of both generally draw from a common pool of literary techniques.
Short stories have no set length. In terms of word count there is no official demarcation between an anecdote, a short story, and a novel. Rather, the form's parameters are given by the rhetorical and practical context in which a given story is produced and considered, so that what constitutes a short story may differ between genres, countries, eras, and commentators. Like the novel, the short story's predominant shape reflects the demands of the available markets for publication, and the evolution of the form seems closely tied to the evolution of the publishing industry and the submission guidelines of its constituent houses.
Short Stories was an American fiction magazine that existed between 1890 and 1959.
Origin of Short Stories
Short Stories began its existence as a literary periodical, carrying work by Rudyard Kipling,
Émile Zola, Bret Harte, Ivan Turgenev and Anna Katharine Green. The magazine advertised
itself with the slogan "Twenty-Five Stories for Twenty-Five Cents". After a few years,
Short Stories became dominated by reprinted fiction. The magazine was sold in
1904 and eventually purchased by Doubleday, Page and Company, which in 1910 transformed
Short Stories into a "quality pulp". The magazine's new editor,
Harry E. Maule (1886-1971) placed an emphasis on Short Stories carrying
well-written fiction; pulp magazine historian Robert Sampson states "For Short Stories, like
Adventure and Blue Book to follow, rose above the
expedient prose of rival magazines like ivory towers thrusting up from swampland".

Reconsider... Full Body Training with Bill Hartman
In this episode Bill and Chris talk about isolation training vs full body workouts and the idea of balancing your movements in training at the gym. The start by talking about a common concept in fitness of trying to attain some sort of push and pull balance of certain muscle groups. Why can training one side of the body actually benefit the entire body and seemingly separate parts? We will touch on this question and many more as we ask you to reconsider what is typically presented as balanced training. #workout #bodybuilding #legday #personaltrainer #fitness

This Program was presented on March 10, 2022 by Sara Grochowski to the Association of Lifelong Learners at ACC in Alpena, MI.
Consider why classic literature endures and where it falls short as librarian, Sara Grochowski, shares books for a variety of ages that retell, reimagine, and reclaim familiar stories to engage young readers of all experiences and new titles with the potential to become classics. With suggestions for children and teens, explore the ways in which classic literature and modern interpretations can be used to connect with the young readers in your life and inspire new appreciation for old favorites.
Sara Grochowski was born in Alpena, Michigan, where she was raised to love books. After spending nearly a decade away for college and to begin a career in the book industry, working primarily as a nationally recognized children’s bookseller, she returned to Alpena in 2019. She is the Head of Youth Services at Alpena County George N. Fletcher Library, where she spends her time working with, learning from, and advocating for the children and teens of Alpena. She’s also a contributing writer for Publishers Weekly, the international news magazine of publishing and bookselling. She firmly believes in the importance of finding the right book for the right reader at the right time.
Oh Eveline I'm so tired of saying the wrong thing While amped up on caffeine Sweaty hand-soaked paper notes Freeform acts and deleted scenes "I think you're beautiful," I said Then the next week you were gone You moved out to another town You're the main character In my short stories There are no happy ends Oh Eveline I'm so tired of saying the wrong thing While amped up on caffeine A furiously scribbled out manuscript New revisions of fucked up dreams "You said, 'You think I'm cool'," she said How do I interpret that? What the hell does that mean? Oh Eveline I'm so tired of saying the wrong thing While amped up on caffeine
