How Singapore Conquers Land That Doesn't Exist
How Singapore Conquers Land That Doesn't Exist
Singapore has grown 25% in land mass since their independence, that's insane. But the journey of growing has not been without controversy and struggle. So how does Singapore reclaim land? And how much bigger will they get?

How Singapore is tackling land shortages
Singapore is called one of the “four Asian tigers” for a reason. After lagging behind other countries back in the 1960s, the country made the leap to become one of the most developed economies not only in Asia but throughout the world. Today, Singapore consistently enters the top ten world rankings of macro indicators and living standards. And the most amazing thing is that this was possible in a very small area. After all, Singapore is the twentieth country smallest country in the world in terms of area. Yes, you heard right. The total area of Singapore is 733 square kilometers. For comparison, this is three times less than Tokyo. And half the size of London. Not surprisingly, land in Singapore is the most valuable and expensive resource. So how is Singapore coping with the land shortage?...

Dredging
Off the coast of Lagos, mighty dredgers are working daily to reclaim land lost to the sea.
Eko Atlantic City is being constructed in six phases – and the first phase entails creating 10 square kilometres of prime land along the Great Wall of Lagos.
When the dredging is completed, a total volume of sand amounting to no less than 100 million cubic meters will have been used, creating a land mass visible from space.

China's largest land reclamation project in Zhejiang Province
In this video, we will explore China's impressive land reclamation project, which involved an expenditure of 60 billion dollars and the excavation of two mountains, making it the largest project of its kind globally. The international community has looked upon this endeavor with envy, and the United Nations has hailed it as another world miracle.
China, despite its vast land area, faces challenges due to its enormous population, making land resources relatively scarce. To address this issue, China has explored various approaches, one of which is land reclamation. This process involves artificially filling bodies of water to create inhabitable land, beautify coastlines, and expand cultivated areas, offering numerous benefits. However, land reclamation also necessitates technical expertise...

Why is the Netherlands disappearing underwater?
Here’s why the Netherlands may have disappeared a long time ago if it wasn’t for their clever engineering.
Because the majority of the Netherlands lies below sea level, they have spent years constructing large-scale sea defenses to push back water and protect themselves from calamities. They've been fairly effective at it, reclaiming over 20% of their territory from the sea and lakes. How did they pull it off? Watch our video to find out.

However, land reclamation also necessitates technical expertise in infrastructure development.
The focus of our discussion is the land reclamation project in Wenzhou, a city situated in the southeastern coastal region of Zhejiang Province, China. Surrounded by the sea, Wenzhou boasts an extensive tidal flat land area of 953,900 mu (approximately 630 square kilometers) and is characterized by numerous mountains and hills. As urbanization has expanded and the population and traffic pressures have increased, Wenzhou's land resources have become particularly scarce.
To address the need for urban expansion, the Wenzhou government had two options: reclaiming the sea or flattening mountains. Considering the predominantly hilly and mountainous terrain of the city, the relevant government departments conducted field investigations and research, leading to the decision to carry out reclamation and development in the Oujiang River, Feiyun River, and the coastal shoal area in the east. This ambitious project is known as the Oufei project.
The primary objective of the Oufei project is to create a new type of coastal city through land reclamation, thereby alleviating land resource shortages in Wenzhou. By reclaiming land from the sea and transforming mountainous areas, China aims to overcome the challenges posed by population growth and urbanization, ultimately enhancing the city's living space and promoting sustainable development.
