Intel 386SX to Cx486SLC, benchmarks with cache enabled.
Thank you to user John ACE for mentioning the different ways to enable the internal cache on the 486SLC. I neglected to enable it from the BIOS and these are the benchmarks from it being enabled.
Astounding difference and very much worth it as an upgrade!

Intel vs AMD? Forget it. The processor wars of the 90s are almost as legendary as Sega vs. Nintendo or Amiga vs. Atari. These companies were dedicated to overtaking Intel in the processor race, and when Intel jumped to the Pentium, Cyrix and AMD weren't far behind with 5x86 and 6x86 processor iterations (AMD with their K6). Intel 386SX Upgrade to a TI err Cyrix 486SLC!
Benchmarks are for non-cache enabled chips. A quick benchmark addendum is available for viewing here: https://youtu.be/xGWjQzge42o I have trimmed the video to remove the part where I goofed here.
This video explores the possibility of upgrading a 386SX processor to a Texas Instruments 486SLC. This, of course, doesn't come without its setbacks and challenges which ends up getting us a Cx486SLC. Unfortunate as the Cyrix only has 1kb of L1 cache, unlike the TI at 8kb.

Hacking a 486SXLC2 (8KB of L1 Cache) into a lucky 386SX Motherboard. Insane performance boost!
OK, I promised... I am delivering!
I modded my 386SX Lab Rat with a 486SXLC2 CPU.
It is advised to first check my Video review of this M/B:
https://youtu.be/MiOfbpbrDW0
The 486SXLC2 is the top 16bit bus, Cyrix based, 386 replacement CPU!
It features 8KB of integrated L1 Cache and a clock doubler.
- The mod was a success! The results were mixed.
- I do not wand to spoil this too much in the description.
- Lots of tweaks, benchmarks and interesting conclusions in this Video.
- I also broke my 386SX Overclocking record (more maybe possible).
Now, I am not going to put these CPU modules into the store.
But if someone is really interested we can discus this.

Today we look at the Cyrix 486DRx2-66 that failed to run on the previous motherboard. This is the same exact motherboard, down to the revision number, but without the 386 soldered in. Seems to work without issue now.
I would love to play come games on this guy for you guys but I suck at games and it is difficult to get an accurate comparison between two systems when the video is variable.

Was it the undoing of an entire processor designer?.... It's a question which has basis in the Cyrix 686 processor's poor FPU performance and John Carmack's coding which leaned heavily on Intel FPU design. But it might not be the only reason why this silicon chip designer bit the bullet. This is an era where it wasn't just Intel vs AMD, or a simple price vs performance war. This was an era of Intel vs AMD vs Cyrix vs IDT, and for me, having lived through it, it's absolutely fascinating.
Sit back and witness glorious CPUs like the Cyrix 5x86, the 6x86, the MediaGX and the MII series. Along with early math co-processors that helped to make early x86 machines fly father than an IBM blue lightning chip set.

The 486SXLC2 is the top 16bit bus, Cyrix based, 386 replacement CPU!
It features 8KB of integrated L1 Cache and a clock doubler.
- The mod was a success! The results were mixed.
- I do not wand to spoil this too much in the description.
- Lots of tweaks, benchmarks and interesting conclusions in this Video.
- I also broke my 386SX Overclocking record (more maybe possible).
Now, I am not going to put these CPU modules into the store.
But if someone is really interested we can discus this.

Phil's Computer Lab 386 Build: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7shDmbwVOA
Today we look at the Cyrix 486DRx2-66 that failed to run on the previous motherboard. This is the same exact motherboard, down to the revision number, but without the 386 soldered in. Seems to work without issue now.
I would love to play come games on this guy for you guys but I suck at games and it is difficult to get an accurate comparison between two systems when the video is variable.
Thank you for watching!
